Title: Is Anyone else having Problems with Rootschat..Today
Post by: Sisterjane on Wednesday 17 October 07 12:22 BST (UK)
Hi all

Is it just me...I got kicked off at midnight and could not get back on so I gave up and give Joe a battering at chess  ;D

After trying for about 1/2 an hour at 11.00am I managed to get on then it took another 20mins to post a reply.

Im still struggling now..it takes an age to open anything or go back or turn a page...is there more behind the scenes work going on  8) ???

Im trying to post this at 12.15..

Jane

Hi Jane,
Yes, I'm having to wait a very long time for each page to load up as well.
Its not just this site though, - I'm trying to look at another, unrelated forum & can't get onto it at all.
Somethings happening out there in www. land??
Cheers
Dave

Yes everything is really slow on Rootschat today but I am also having problems on other web pages as well plus one site I am trying to connect to has vanished

Did think it was my computer - have re-booted 3 times

Another one who has been "wading through treacle" today - only here, not had problems elsewhere. I am just about to log off & hope the treacle has gone when I return!

My browser has a timer, so I know this thread took 169 seconds to load :o After clicking reply, I waited 79 seconds for the reply box.  Clicking links in topic notification emails also results in a long wait.
I've also found FreeBMD extremely slow for the last few days, & Ancestry keeps telling me the site is too busy.

I'm going to make a cup of tea while I wait for this reply to post ;D

Hello To A RootsChat Members,

Yes, we have also been having the same 'Go-Slow-Problem' this afternoon and evening.  It definitely appears to be mainly with 'RootsChat'.

Everything is alright with 'Firefox', 'Google',
'Scotlands People', 'Free BMDs', even 'Ebay' is lightning fast.

I had thought it might have been our 'provider' out here in Australia, trying to convince us to convert to 'Broadband', by overloading the 'Dial-Up' system.  We are just waiting for them to lower their charges, otherwise we might have to go elsewhere.

Would you believe it - while typing this message, just got logged off, the joys of 'Dial-Up'!

Well, lets hope 'RootsChat', gets a recharge and we are back to normal soon.

Time to sleep now, for us.
Back again, soon.

Jeanette H.

I'm wadding too!!

Ancestry has been a problem for me for a while - it doesn't like Firefox but will work fine with IE!

Somebody put another 50p in the meter and get Rootschat running at full speed again!

Some other sites are a bit slower, some just seem slower, but are in fact OK,
so I would say that is just the usual random fluctuations.

It looks like it's mainly RootsChat that is having problems  :(

Sorry Guys, we'll all just have to be patient, until Trystan can sort it out.

Shopping, dusting, ironing, housework, reading, sorting family history files, .........
I sure we'll think of some alternative things to bridge the gap  ;D

Best genealogy boards bar none, being let down by technology. This has being going on for some weeks now, but this afternoon is by far the worst. 5 minutes waiting after clicking on the thread on Recent Posts.

About the slowest I have ever seen it, it's as bad as trying to get on late evening in the USA while maintenance is running.   I guess it's the price we have to pay for RC being so popular - and free - let's not forget it's free :)

Maybe if a couple of thousand of us were to donate a pound each they could do the necessary upgrades to the system.   I wouldn't object to the front page having a link where you could make donations using Paypal or similar.   Any thoughts?

I think paying for RC would cause a lot of people to not use it, which would be a shame, but I think there are enough regulars who could afford to donate a small sum if it was suggested to help maintain it.

Not into housework! Got the flu!, but I feel so silly because I spent ages trying to answer a message and got thrown out twice! Thought in tiny addled brain, I will PM this nice lady because she will think that I am most rude otherwise!

Did that! got thrown out again, got into outbox and it had gone off OK, have now seen that it went through on the thread after all! Can't spell check anything too slow!

Think I will go back to bed! I feel such a fool!

Actually Tony as controversial as it may be, I would like Roots to remain free, there are enough companies out there making huge amounts of money out of us because we happen to be into family history, long live the few free ones there are!!!!

But then I guess we will have to put up with the slowness  :-\

I think its a great idea Tony! I get so frustrated sitting here looking at the same screen for five minutes that I've turned the pc off twice or gone onto different websites. If it was like this every day I wouldn't be on here virtually day as I am now, and a lot of "new" people would be put off coming on here. I'd be quite happy to pay a couple of quid a year to keep it running at a decent speed. It could be voluntary donations so no one has to pay if they dont want to. Its not even the cost of a drink is it......

I have been asleep on the keyboard since dinner time, just just opening an eye now and then to see if whatever has opened yet ;D ;D How about not spending more than 2 hours at one time on the computer,as a lot do.And not using rootschat when it isn't really necessary.I only when it is then i log off. There seems to be more users in the afternoon than there ever was.The best time on rootschat is after 12 midnight,I have the bags under my eyes to prove it ;D ;D

I answer quite a lot of requests, Celia, and I don't think that the requesters would be all that happy if I clocked off in the middle of a detailed search, etc. after 2 hours  ::)

Working super fast here too now :)

I wouldn't like to see RC become a paid site - not all of us can afford to pay, but a lot of other sites do have links for accepting donations.  I think enough of us might be prepared to offer something to show our gratitude.

Hi all

Well I wasnt even sure that my original post had posted...I gave up shortly after trying to post it as I was so stressd my keyboard was in dire danger of being thrown through the monitor screen  ;D ;D.....so instead of rootschatting I had the enormous pleasure of Ma in Law calling round to see "her boy" and staying for a couple of hours and by that time I was ready to launch other things through windows  ;D ;D...Aww I love her to death really, plus she brought us 2 nice juicy sirloin steaks for our T tonight.

Anyway it seems like things are back to normal now thank goodness.

Celia......The late great Bill Shankley famously said "Football is more important than life or death" Id apply those same sentiments to Rootschat!!!!! :o :o......Blame Trystan he created this Monster.

Actually meles, White Lady, my sister-in-law, was talking about the number of posts not being increased through posts put up on the Cheshire site in answer to queries, not on the totally off topic board.  I'm sure most members on RC enjoy seeing their numbers increasing, afterall I imagine that's what they were invented for. Your last comments seem to me to be rather sarcastic and uncalled for.
