I know I have come across this name while transcribing the 1861 census.  Who are you looking for?

Lorayne

Caroline Sillibourne (aged 70) was lodging with my great grandfather & family at Norwood Street in Ashford in 1891. Her place of birth was given as Mersham. She may have been a family friend as i believe the name has cropped up on other occassions.

There is Silliborne marriage in Ruckinge, it very early but may come in useful at some stage.

Elizabeth Silliboorne married David Sladdin 28/10/1628.

There are no other Sillibornes in Ruckinge

Stephen & Caroline are having children, Elizabeth, Harriet, Stephen, James or jane can't read it , Caroline, Fred Robert, Louise  in the 1850's.

Hi All,

I have a Silliboune/Sillebourn/Sillibourn marriage in my Burkett line from Kent.

Henry Silliboune married Mary Ann Burkett 1850, Dover, Kent son of Stephen Silliboune.

Does anyone have Henry in their trees?

Dear Jomck,
I am descended from Stephen Sillibourne and Ester or Hester Gorham, who were your Henry's grandparents. I have a bit of info on Henry. I recently found a Merchant Seaman's record for him. He was born on 2 May, 1822 at Wye, Kent. He was a Steward, and was issued with a merchant seaman's ticket on 19 March, 1846, at Hull. He could write, and was 24 years old 5ft. 71ns. tall, had brown hair and brown eyes and fair complexion. Mary Ann nee Burkett died in July1859, and Henry remarried to Martha Martin in 1860. He died on 31 October, 1881.
I am currently working on my Sillibourne line, after a few years of other families. I believe our Sillibournes descend from Jermain or German Sillibourne who married Elizabeth Williams at St. Paul, Canterbury, in 1598. There looks to me to be only one Sillibourne family in the whole of Kent. I am missing some info from Great Chart to fill in some holes, but having trouble with records.
I am in Australia.
By the way, Thank you everyone who replied to this board.
Lis, That Elizabeth Sillibourne is a daughter of Jermain Sillibourne and Elizabeth, sister of Thomas, who I believe is where we are from, so she is related, thank you.
Regards
Lorayne

Hi Lorayne,

I'm descended from James Finn who married Elizabeth Sillibourne nee Harnden in 1754. I haven't done much on the Sillibournes but have a copy of Thomas Sillibourne's will (proved 1752). You probably know already that Stephen Sillibourne was married at Sevington by licence to Hester Gorham on 16th March 1779. You may not know that Stephen Sillibourne was a witness at the wedding of James Finn's oldest son James to Mary Sheafe in Aldington in 1781. Also in the Willesborough parish registers I made a note many years ago that in 1819 the incumbant wrote that "Mr Sillibourne has the 18 acre field". I think I worked out at the time that this was along the boundary of the parish with sevington but it was a long time ago and I may be mistaken.

Lynne

Dear Lynne
Thank you so much for your reply. I may not be in touch for a few days, as it is late here (Australia) and I am not very well at the moment. But I am so glad to hear from someone about the Sillibourne Line. Do you know anything about the Finns? As I have a Margaret Finn married to Thomas Sillibourne in 1631 at Great Chart. Her parents were Nicholas Finn (I have his will ) and Alice Arrow. I believe this Thomas Sillibourne was a son of Jermain or German Sillibourne and Elizabeth Williams of Canterbury B.1600. This has been extremely hard, but you can't give up. They are all Thomas Silliboure until Stephen. I do have Thomas Sillibourne's will from 1751. Will talk soon. I am in Australia.

Lorayne

Hi Lorayne,

I hope you're feeling much better soon. Yes, I have done quite a bit of work on the Finns but from the late 1600s onwards mainly - it's a far more common name than Sillibourne and there are so many Finns in the villages around Ashford that in the early records especially it's hard to sort them out. Sillibourne is far less common and even the varients aren't usually that different from each other in my - quite limited - experience in looking at the name.

Warm regards

Lynne

Hi Gary,

I'm sorry I'm not able to help you. My interest in the Sillibournes is through Elizabeth Harnden who married Thomas Sillibourne and then, after she was widowed, married my ancestor James Finn.

Good luck in your researches.

Lynne
