D ap D,
I am related to Meliora Lodington (who married Henry Down, son of Richard Down, of Halliwick Manor House, Middlesex and his wife Rose Neale), do you have any further details re: the Lodingtons?
My link is via her brother Ensign Thomas Edward Lodington (born 22 Jan. 1797, chr. 9 Apr. 1797, Old Church, St. Pancras, buried 1845).
The Keys had at least two children:
1. William Down Key, born 14 Oct. 1812, chr. 14 Nov. 1812, St. Mary, Marylebone
2. Rose Key, born 20 May 1814, chr. 18 Jun. 1814, St. Mary, Marylebone (she married Rev. Barrett Edward Lampet and had three children -- I can supply more information if required)
Cornelius Buller was Governor of the Bank of England and had two sisters who both married into the Pole (alias Van Notten-Pole) family. I do not know anything more about him.
Emma Down married Rev. William Money, later Money-Kyrle, Rector of Yatesbury, Wiltshire. They had 8 children.
Henry Down married Meliora Lodington and had 17 children. Again, I can supply further information if required.
The other siblings and their wives/husbands and issue, I am still searching for.
How do you link to this family?
Regards,
James R. Yeowell.

Hi James,
I am descended from Clara Down, your Henry's younger sister.
Not got much on the Lodingtons, but can send you what I do have.
Have got a load of info about Richard Down (their father), photos of the grave etc. and an ancestry going back several more generations.
Rose (Clara and Henrys mother) was related to Oliver Cromwell, so I can also send you that link.
Will PM you my email address.

D,
I know this post was some time ago but I just came across it - having returned to my Down ancestors after doing other branches.
I am descended from Richard Down son of Henry Down and Meliora Lodington. I would be most interested in any information and photos of graves or memorials.
Richard Down came to Australia and was a Customs Officer in Melbourne. My great grandmother Emily Lodington Down was born in Richmond Victoria in 1854 and married David Barker in 1878.

Lorraine,
Do you perhaps have any further information on the Lodington line, as I am of course related to you via them?
Feel free to PM me with any details.
Thanks
James.

James,
Is there anything you are particularly wanting, I am currently working my way through your scavenger hunt to see if there is anything there I missed.

Later: Something more to add. I was checking a 1911 census page for another branch of my tree when I saw that they had a servant named Henrietta Marie Dyer Lodington. My interest was immediately peeked - I went looking.
Henrietta was the youngest daughter of the ill fated George Edward Dyer Lodington and his wife Louisa. Further digging found that her parents were married in 1873 and that his father was William Lodington.
Cannot as yet find his birth or baptism but did locate an Edward Horace Dyer Lodington's baptism in Secunderabad, Madras in 1863 - his date of birth is listed as 17 Mar 1840. His parents are listed as William Lodington and Harriett.
India is definitely worth looking at as George, in his evidence at his wife's inquest mentions being in the Battle of Punjab.
It may also be worth checking the non-conformist registers as certainly some of William Stewart Lodington's children are shown as non-conformist baptisms. I wonder if the C of E details are after a non-conformist event.
Also in The Times of 28 Nov 1820 "William Stewart Lodington married Sarah, eldest daughter of the late William Day, Pas Capt. R.N. and Governor of Sierra-Leone"
From Gentlemen's Magazine 1791 p. 873 - Marriages of Considerable Persons: Sep. 22 Thos. Lodington Esq. of Lamb's Conduit, one of the Secondaries of the Court of Common Pleas, To Miss Day, of New Norfolk Street, daughter of the late John D. esq. of the Island of Antigua".
More checking to do.

Lorraine,
Apologies for the delay. I have only just come across your reply. I shall reply in more depth later, as I have to pop out now. What have you found is excellent though!
I was just now looking at the two Day ladies and you've solved the issue of their father's names. I still believe perhaps that John Day and William Day are related, so I shall hopefully find a link soon. Although Sarah Day was not related to me (well, she could be if she's related to Ann Lodington (née Day), her mother-in-law) it's still interesting to find out who her father is finally.
As you may be aware, it seems this Sarah Day was born in Yeovil, Somerset circa 1800 and had a sister Harriet Day born circa 1802 in Kent Road, London. Harriet married an Aaron Saul and had two children.
I shall return later with more of my thoughts.
Thanks again for solving a small barrier in my tree. I can pursue the ancestry of Ann Day, who is my 5th Great Grandmother.
Best regards,
James R. Yeowell.

Lorraine,
I have now had a bit of time to look into your searches a bit more and I have discovered that Capt. William Day, R.N., Governor of Sierra Leone, was son of John Day, of Antigua (via Stirnet). Indeed, this link shows an Elizabeth Day marrying Charles Wills Walrond, 3rd son of Main Swete Walrond, 5th Marquis de Vallado. This means I am also now related to Sarah Day who married William Stewart Lodington (as well as William Stewart Lodington himself). It also may prove likely that perhaps they were slave owners, or may have ancestry that could link to this. Is there anyway to prove such information, do you know?
Also via the above link, I may have family in St. Kitts and Venezuela. Interesting!
Does The Times Archive (which I unfortunately do not have access to at home) have anything further in relation to the Day family? I have found other individuals distantly linked to other people in my tree who could potentially be related as well. Day, however, is not a unique surname and so I am sure many of these individuals do not share a link whatsoever.
Any new leads are most welcome indeed. This family is proving even more interesting than first thought! I never knew I had ancestors who lived in Antigua.
Addendum: further to the above, I have also found another daughter of Post Capt. William Day, R.N., Governor of Sierra Leone here: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/4216795
I also found the corresponding marriage on Family Search.
To summarise this new individual:
Ellen Day, 2nd daughter of Post Capt. William Day, R.N., Governor of Sierra Leone (whom apparently died in 1805) married Dr. David Barry Conway, R.N, surgeon, on 23 September 1828 in Lee, Kent.
Also worth noting is that Aaron Saul was a labourer with the East India Company.
Best regards,
James R. Yeowell
-
Lorraine,
It turns out the Blackburn family who were in St. Kitts moved to Bradford (where Rev. Thomas Blackburn was born).
Whilst Grace Lodington Walrond who married F. Martin, of Venezuela, turns out to have married Finlay McMartin on 5th April 1828 at Christ Church, Marylebone, London. He probably did spend some time in Venezuela though, I shall do some digging.
Whilst other descendants of Charles Wills Walrond and Elizabeth Day ended up in Scotland, Canada and New Zealand. Some include Gentry and Serviceman (including one winner of the Victoria Cross).
I can message you with further details if necessary.
I hope this is of use.
Best regards,
James R. Yeowell

Any further details would be most helpful. I downloaded the 3 volumes of A History of Antigua the other day and there are references to the Day family in the indexes of each book, as well as Walrond. It will take some time to get through the books though (they were on Internet archives)
There is also a website for the West Indies http://www.plantations.bb/ that contains plantations owners as well as cemetery transcriptions. I haven't interrogated it at length but it is worth looking at I think.
I also now have the will of William Day R.N. but have yet to spend any time on it.
I will also start going through the list of entries for the Day name in the Gentleman's Magazine - the index entries go for about 3 pages so it will take some time.

Lorraine,
Apologies for the late reply!
You sound like you're doing a good job on the research here. If you do find anything interesting, do let me know! There did seem to be quite a few people with the surname Day in Antigua (and the West Indies in general) but it is unclear whether they were indeed all related.
Did you get anything from Capt. William Day, R.N.'s will? Any family links would be tremendous.
As for those further details I promised, I have yet to collate them all together. It's been quite a while since I researched this line. I shall do some further digging now a few months have moved on, as new records are always being entered.
Indeed, I came across a portrait of a Lodington the other month; which was a nice surprise.
I look forward to hearing again from you soon.
Best regards,
James R. Yeowell

Lorraine,
I forgot some things that I am not sure if I mentioned before. If I have, then many apologies. Sometimes though it is worth going over old ground.
A while back I found a link in a Google Book (although not the direct link the book, there is mention of it here: http://newsfeed.rootsweb.com/th/read/HOLLIDAY/1999-09/0937485980) for a christening for a John Day, at St. James Garlickhithe, London for 12 August 1733. The source was about apprenticeships. Anyhow, in it, it notes he was the son of John Day (a wax chandler) and Lydia. He was admitted from St. James Garlickhithe to his mother Lydia Day to serve Mr. John Holliday, of Antigua, merchant, on 3 February 1748.
The John Holliday alias Halliday in question might be the one who married Elizabeth Delap (by license) on 17 December 1741 at St. Paul's Church, Antigua.
Their issue included:
1. Francis Halliday, chr. 12 January 1743, St. John's, Antigua
2. John Delap Halliday, of the Leasowes, Shropshire, born 29 September 1749, chr. 23 November 1749, St. John's, Antigua and died 24 July 1794, Leasowes, Salop (married and had issue)
3. William Halliday, chr. 19 December 1751, St. John's, Antigua (married)
4. Margaret Delap Halliday, born 1753 (married)
5. Francis Delap Halliday, christened 30 October 1758 in Richmond upon Thames, Surrey and died 6 November 1794, Fyfield, Hampshire
6. Elizabeth Halliday
Some of their children and grandchildren married into gentry familes, including the Tollemache, Stratford , Wolseley and the French comte de Noé's.
Of course, I do not believe there is a family link between the Days and the Hallidays but I would not be surprised to find there is, either.
Do you think it likely the John Day above is the same individual who was later "of Antigua" and the father of Elizabeth, Ann and Post-Capt. William Day, R.N., Governor of Sierra Leone?
The date of christening definitely seems to fit.
Any thoughts on this would be most welcomed.
Addenda: John Day and Lydia had two further issue:
Margaret Day, christened 12 November 1735 at St. James, Garlickhithe
Harbitt Day (male), christened 12 June 1737 at St. James, Garlickhithe and buried 10 September 1737 at St. James, Garlickhithe
The name Harbitt is unusual. It could relate to a surname of a family member or it may be a complete red-herring. I did some searching before without much luck.
Further to the above, I also found this:
http://www.londonlives.org/browse.jsp?div=GLCCMC25105MC251050320
To quote:
Court day Continued October the 3d: 1732

Garlickhith London Labourer bound to Thomas Banbury Citizen and Carpenter of London having

I hope this of some use to you and may help us get a bit closer to finding out more about the Day family.
Best regards,
James R. Yeowell

Re: Capt. William Day
A long shot, I know but could this be his marriage?
William Day married Sarah Pitman on 6 Mar 1793 at St. James', Bath, Somerset.
-
Hi ...
I seem to have lost my reply before it was sent, so I'll try again ...
James, your comment re Ellen Day marrying a Conway explains the position of the Ellen Conway who was present at the baptism of her nephew (& my GGGfather) John Day Lodington 1825 - or "half-baptism", and that's an interesting item!
Lorraine, you say you are connected with Meliora Lodington 1798 & Henry Down who have many descendants in Australia. I would be interested to learn more. I am a GGGGson of Meliora's brother William Stewart Lodington 1802 who married Sarah Day, with many Australian descendants. There were also 2 sisters with many Australian descendants: Elizabeth Maria Lodington 1804 who married George Jackson, and Camilla Mary Basset Lodington 1806 who married Manoel Joaquim Soares.
Cheers
Peter in Canberra
