Does anyone know anything about the Devonshire Arms , Church Alley, Bakewell ? Or even if there is a photo of this public house.
Anthony Naylor was the landlord in the 1871 census . He is my Husbands gr x 3 grandfather .
Thanks

If you use Google Images to look for
"Devonshire Arms" Bakewell
you will come up with a number of pictures but I am not sure which is the one you are looking for. There are unfortunately a number of pubs and hotels in the area around Bakewell called the Devonshire. This is because at one time they were probably part of the Chatsworth estate which is of course the home of the Dukes of Devonshire.

I don't think the pub can be there now as there doesn't seem to be a Devonshire Arms in Church Alley, but there does seem to be a Devonshire House , which seems to be is flats .
I don't live in the Bakewell area and am not sure if this could be flats converted from the pub or perhaps the pub was knocked down and flats built .
Could anyone who lives nearby have a look ?! Is there anyone who knows about the local Bakewell history and has heard of the Devonshire Arms ?
I have checked google and I don't think any of them are in Church Alley. Thanks for the info about the Duke of Devonshire and Chatsworth House .

Hello
Anthony Naylor was also my 3xgt grandfather. The Devonshire Arms pub was in Church Alley, Bakewell, I believe it's now called Devonshire House. Anthony's son, Will Naylor (my 2xgt grandfather) was landlord of the pub in the 1890s.
Anthony died in 1872 of blood poisoning and his widow Fanny (nee Bramwell) married Edward Williams. They moved to Shropshire, and the three youngest sons of Fanny and Anthony moved with them, Charles, Harry and James. Anthony and Fanny had two older children, Elizabeth and William.
I have more info on this family if you're interested.

Hi Champagne
I would very much like to share information about the Naylor family with you. Please, could you send me a private message and we can exchange email addresses.. My husband's great garndmother was Elizabeth Anne Naylor b 1862 in Bakewell. She names Anthony Naylor as her father at the time of her marriage in Bakewell, but her parents marry after her birth. You may be able to shed some light on this !

Have you looked on "Street View". It's a big old grey building and has "Devonshire House" carved on one of the lintels. Church Alley, nowadays, is a bit of a backwater and I can't actually remember ever walking down it.

Thanks Ray. Just had a look and found it! Certainly looks as if it could be the right place unless anyone who lives in Bakewell knows anything different? It looks 19thc at least . Googleview looks a good resource. Will have to use it more for old addresses!

The Derby Mercury of 8th February 1899 has a detailed report of the inquest on William Naylor (married to Jane) landlord of the Devonshire Arms, Bakewell, for which the jury returned a verdict of “found drowned”

Thanks Dave - he did indeed drown, and the jury returned an open verdict as to the cause of death - he led rather an eventful life!
Much appreciated

Anthony Naylor was landlord of the Devonshire Arms from 1865:
The Derby Mercury (Derby, England), Wednesday, April 12, 1865; Issue 6941
BAKEWELL Petty Sessions: The constables of several townships of Bakewell were sworn for the ensuing year, and the overseers appointed for the same period:- The following transfer of alehouse licenses took place: The Devonshire Arms, Bakewell from William Hibbert to Anthony Naylor.
