Title: Elizabeth Buchan
Post by: FOXSTEL on Sunday 14 October 07 07:29 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I'm trying to find the family of Elizabeth Buchan who married Joseph Stelfox in 1904. I have their marriage certificate and her father is Alexander Buchan. She was age 19 and resided at 6 Birchfield road, Walton, Liverpool. Her father was a labourer. I am interested in finding her mothers name so I can move on with this branch. I am led to believe Elizabeth may be Scottish.

Thanks, Alex.

Although this Elizabeth's age seems to be a few years adrift from what the Marriage Certificate says for your Elizabeth, this is the only Birth Registration for anyone of that name in Lancashire between 1882 and 1889

1887 West Derby AMJ quarter 8b 413

Elizabeth Buchan

She is also the only person of that name in the Liverpool area on the census in 1901 (*see below)

There seems to be a strong possibility (everything considered) that she is yours and her age when she married was probably 17/18.

*There is another person shown as Elizabeth Buchan on the 1891 census (parents Robert and Annie) born 1884 but when that one appears in 1901 the family are actually called Buchanan.

In 1881 the family can be found at Liverpool RG11/3612 Folio 34 Page 15. This can be seen free of charge on http://www.familysearch.org/.

Alexander is again shown to be from Scotland (and he was then a Mariner).

Probable Marriage Registration

1872 Liverpool AMJ quarter 8b 232

Alexander Philip Buchan
Elizabeth Ann Jones

I am now struggling to get back any further for you. I think that you need to see the 1872 Marriage Certificate (or the Church Register) because......

1. There are several ladies called Elizabeth (or Elizabeth Ann) Jones, of the correct age (+/-1), on the 1871 and 1861 censuses in the Liverpool area but I cannot find one with a mother called Mary from Wales. The Marriage Certificate should provide her father's name and occupation which might help to identify her.

2. The GRO Marriage Index definitely says that Alexander's middle name is Philip but there is no birth for an Alexander Philip Buchan on the IGI. However http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ has him listed as Alexander B Buchan.

On the IGI http://www.familysearch.org/ there is an Alexander Bisset Buchan of the correct age. His parents are John and Isabella and when checked on the Scotland censuses for 1861 and 1871 John is a Fisherman and in 1871 so was Alexander. This seems to be consistent with Alexander’s occupation in 1881 in England. It may be (and it is only a possibility, nothing more) that the Marriage entry is not very clear and the words “Bisset” and “Philip” might have been confused by different people looking at it.

Either way, I think that sight of the Marriage Certificate or (better still) the Church Register entry is essential. They married at Liverpool, St Paul.

Sorry, that I could not provide more but I hope that what I have done proves to be useful to you.

Regarding point 1. above, please note that Elizabeth’s mother was not called Mary at all (no wonder I could not find her :-\) she was called Margaret.

This might be the family....

1861

Liverpool RG9/2668 Folio 17 Page 28

John Jones Head M 31 Seaman Wales Aberdovey
Margaret do Wife M 29 Wales Amlwch
Elizabeth do Daur 6 Lancashire Liverpool

3 Fazakerly Street, Liverpool

Sight of the Marriage details is still recommended to ascertain if her father was indeed called John.

A lot of duplication of effort.  Sorry  :-\

Hi Mary

Thanks for telling me about that. I have not seen that site before.

I am one of the strange breed who does not object to "duplication of effort" in this context. In fact, I think that it is often a good idea for some people to ask the same or similar question more than once in order to obtain confirmation from another independent source (especially now that there are so many people with the means and inclination to provide answers whereas just a couple of years ago only a comparative few people were able and available to do so and their time then was genuinely “precious“). It is also pleasing to see other people reaching the same conclusions as oneself.

It will be interesting to hear who Tina thinks are Lizzie's parents in 1871.

What did you think about the IGI entry for Alexander Bisset Buchan and the associated Scotland Census entries ?

Best wishes

DS ;)

I would think they sound very likely.

In view of your "Guilty" plea, it is the judgement of this court that you shall endeavour to ascertain the validity of all or any of the proposals put to you and that you shall report back with your findings on an unspecified date in the future.

The jury has taken into account the anagrammatic or syllabic reversal style of your moniker and has decided to adopt a similar technique temporarily as part of your retribution.

SD ;)

If "Mustard" decides to impose a similar judgement for you on the other site, the two sentences shall run concurrently ;D

SD sorry DS,

Agreed, i will get the marriage certificate for Alex and Lizzie to end this post though I am very worried about the amount of Celtic blood now running through me.  My fathers side were very English with rumour of Scandanavian influeces.  I'm off now inish my Leek soup as I've spilt some on my kilt.

Thanks again, Alex.
