Title: Army Service core 1891 Hythe

I am trying to find out details about John Down. The details I have are


He enlisted in the Army Service Core, Rank Driver , 23rd January 1887At Hythe

He spent 7 years in the Army, and 5 years in the reserves.

His Army Number was T(?) or Y (?) 7273.

1891 he was based at Portsmouth,

How can I check the 1891 census for the Army?

Any help with advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Yonder

If you have an Ancestry account you can go to Hampshire, then to Portsmouth, and you will find two District Barracks: Colewort and Cambridge. There is a small detachment of the ASC in Colewort. But unfortunately not John Down.

He may have been on furlough. Do you know his approximate age in 1891? Did he have a wife and children then? And where was he born? All this will help to find him.

Hi Ken, John Down was born in Ashford, Kent.1861.

He was unmarried I think.

I have an Ancestry Account, so I will have a browse, Thank you.
