Hi Peckham
Earlier you wrote:-
"I need photos of the following specific addresses and streets . . . :
Number 4 Wellington Terrace - Hastings
. . . on the map it appears to be sandwiched between Queens Road and Stonefield Road . . . but Hastings Council of Listed Buildings lumps it together with Portland Terrace - both part of Portland Place?"
I went to Wellington Terrace today and took some pictures for you of Number 4
It is sandwiched between Queens Road and Stoniefield Road - but it is actually a Terrace of Houses in Portland Place - so it was a bit more difficult to locate than I thought, but hey, who cares, the sun was shining..
The first picture below shows number 4 taken from the Stone Street end of Portland Place and the second is more of a distant shot from the same end - Can you spot the lady in the pink jumper cutting the hedge of No 4.
She tells me that she has lived there for 12 years, but the house is over 200 years old. Recently she has had to put new windows in and have repairs done to the chimney. She says that the modern day windows are not a patch on the windows that they took out as the wood is a lot softer.
I tried to worm my way into the house to take some pictures, but must be losing my touch as she did not let me in.
More pictures to follow

Hi Peckham
Just across the road from No 4 is the school - I wonder if any of your ancestors went to this school
School picture taken from Stone Street End, lus a close up of the date / name on the front of the building

May I just say what fantastic photos these are Chris, I have been following the thread with interest from my days of working in Hastings and St Leonards. :D :D :D
But then any photo of a property not taken from a hiding place behind a hedge or tree is bound to be good. I must learn to be braver like you. It'll be a long time before I try to worm my way indoors though!!

And finally a couple of shots of the terrace from the other end - i.e the town centre and Qeens Road end of Portland Place

Just had to add this one of the little old lady cutting the hedge.
I think she is polish and has several gold teeth
Very nice to talk to, but a little bit on the deaf side

Just had a wicked thought - I think the house that is for sale was next door - If I went to the estate agents and asked for the particulars, it would give us a good idea of the layout of the houses - What do you think?

Thanks for the compliments.
Most people when they see you photograping there house will come out and quietly ask why you are doing it - this then gives you the chance to explain genealogy and that your ancestors once lived there etc; that usually gets a "would you like to come inside and look around"
Possibly 'worm my way in' was the wrong expression - but most people are happy to show you around, - always apologising for the house being in a mess etc.
As yet, I have never tried to take pictures from behind the hedge
But once again, thanks for the compliments.

Chris:
The Wellington Place photos equal the detailed coverage (and your expertise) depicted in the Highlands Mews ones.
I like the idea of getting the particulars from the estate agent - as I mentioned in our message exchange, I had seen on the web an estate agents reference to a property for sale so it is probably the one.
Apart from curiosity there is also a practical interest re the dimensions/number of rooms because of how it reflected on the lives/living circumstances of the family, i.e., two of the sons were born at Number 4 - 1886 and 1888 but by then the family amounted to TEN people - the parents and Eight children.
Having stood outside the place you would have a concept of the size of the place but I am thinking that it would be impossible for us today to imagine so many people in such a "small" property.
By 1890 the family had moved to 10 Alma Villas where there their Ninth child was born in the October of that year . . . but 10 Alma no longer exists, i.e., the the road and vast majority of the houses are still there but the location of Number 10 (and along with it a handful of houses) would have stood at the top end, i.e., the corner of Alma/Sedlescombe Road - but the corner plot is now occupied by a Gospel Hall.
By 1901 the family had moved to 46 Gensing Road. . . but by then the Five oldest children had moved on.
Once again - my thanks and admiration . . . and I was wondering if you photograph on a commision basis? ;)
Regards

Hello,
Interesting post....
just checked the estate agent website, and it has some lovely photos of inside the house.....
it is the rightmove website, type in hastings and the price is £175950, you have to tick STC box,
when you find the right house, click full brochure....
hope this helps

I am not in the UK and "right move" means nothing to me.

Hi Peckham
Glad to be of service to you - I enjoyed taking the piccies - but a good camera makes all the difference.

Chris:
In making the offer you have, you have opened a door that if I were to take advantage of it , it would probably result in an abuse. So at this time I will take a rain check.
Sandra:
Found the website and details . . . it is smaller than I had expected and beyond my comprehension how ten people - irrespective of their physical size - could all fit into the place!

Excuse me for butting in on your conversation, I am looking for 2,3,4,5 & 6 Wellington Place, Hastings as in the 1911 census one of my relatives worked there as an assistant draper, for Metcalfe & Kirkpatrick Drapers & funeral directors. I am confused as this appear to be a terrace of houses. Anyone got any ideas.

Hi Sticky02
Yes, Wellington Place and Wellington Square are completely separate but close to each other.
Wellington Place is where a parade of shops is situated whilst Wellington Square was for the Gentry and many of the houses had many servants as well as Ballroom's where many a Gala evening took place. Will try to dig out a map to show you there locations.
See this modern day street map: WELLINGTON PLACE on HASTINGS Street Map
hastings.streetmapof.co.uk/wellington-place/ (Google it)

Hi Chris,
Thanks for that idea, but I presume it is a pedestrian precinct so maps won't go down to letting you see whats there. I did find a very interesting site though so have taken the liberty of pasting it.http://www.hastingschronicle.net/1900-1949.html
I see that in July 1926 a very famous 3d and 6d store bought the plot, and soon demolished it so no chance then of seeing what the old buildings were like.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi again
Yes, i was aware of that website and have used it many times in the past.
I was also aware that Woolworths (now Sports Direct) had a store built on the land in question and that the original building had been pulled down nearly a century ago.
I have not seen any old pictures of that side of the road prior to 1926, but will keep my eyes open for same just in case any appear

Hi
The photographer of this picture (a postcard) would have stood with his back to the buildings in question, although this might have been taken a bit earlier. When did they move to Wellington Place.
Incidentally the light coloured building on the right is where my mother lived from 1989 up to 2003, and the next building at the top of the steps with the canopies over the first floor balcony was one of the residences that had a Ballroom, now converted into a flat. (where mums friend lived)

Wow, thank you that helps me understand a lot how my relative was one of 30+ in the 5 building's. It looks to have been a very poshl area of Hastings.
Thanks again.
