Title: John Alsop artist of 12a Edith Terrace, Chelsea COMPLETED THANKS
Post by: Kayzee on Thursday 11 October 07 10:35 BST (UK)
Can anyone give me any information on John Allsop born 1867 Scotland who lived alone at 12a Edith Terrace, Chelsea in 1901. He was an artist who appears to have exhibited as J J Alsop.  Would especially like to know if he married & had descendants but also to see a copy of a painting would be fun & to know if he managed to make a living. Are there any photos of Edith Terrace?

There's a death notice in The Times of March 11 1954 - John J Alsop RBA died at Gloucester 6th March aged 87, of The Studio Totshill Chepstow youngest son of the late Frederick Alsop of Milngavie.

There are a few mentions of him in The Times
1893, 1899, 1908 as an exhibitor.

A property in Edith Terrace is currently available to let - with a photo http://www.chelseastudios.co.uk/chelseasw10x.htm

Thank you doesn't seem enough but THANK YOU! Brilliant result not only can I put a death date & place on the tree I can see inside his building in Chelsea. Do you think the furniture has changed!!! I shall pop down to Chepstow one day & see if there is more to learn but thanks ShaunJ for knocking a brick out of that wall & letting me peep through!

Hi there Kay - I've just googled JJ Alsop and your post below came high up the list.  I don't know if this is the same person or this is of any interest, but I've just bought a little watercolour by JJ Alsop - Royal Society of Birmingham Artists, exhibited 1892-93, and I'm looking into him.  I can send you a photo of it if you like.  (I've never used this website before so not sure whether you'll see this as your original post was a long time ago.)

Hi Alison, Thanks for your message & yes I am very interested. I hope I can help you too, infact I have a family tree for JJ's paternal line going back to the marriage of his 4x gt grandfather in 1683 if you are interested! Assuming that I am correct with my research, JJ was baptised John with no 2nd christian name in Scotland on 21 Feb 1867 but may have aquired the 2nd initial to differentiate between him & his Uncle John 1829 - 1909 who also painted & appears to have lived all his life in Birmingham. Since my initial post I have seen a painting on-line of the Uncle which is held in B'ham City Archives & can be viewed if you google 'John Alsop watercolour' & visit the www.ishepherd.co.uk site mentioned. I have also seen a painting of Greta Bridge by John Alsop 'a scottish artist' was recently sold on ebay. My first record of John jnr.calling himself JJ is in 1897. However, I cannot be sure of these Johns as according to the 'Dictionary of Scottish Art' by Peter J McEwan a John Alsop exhibited a Highland landscape at the RSA in 1856 & this could not have been John Jnr but must have been John snr who at every census appears in B'ham. However John snrs brother Fred (also an artist & father of John jnr)studied for a short time at th Trustees Acadamy in Edinburgh so maybe John snr did too. At the time I looked for Fred I had no idea his brother was also an artist so I failed to ask for a lookup on him
I hope some of this makes sense & yes please send me a copy of the painting and let me know what it is you are interested in as I have quite a lot of detail from census returns etc. which I will re -aquaint myself with if you are interested. It is not my husband's direct line (we are the poor relations!) so I have not yet visited Chepstow but I take it from the death notice kindly sent by ShaunJ that he was not married. However I have lots of detail about his siblings and a little mystery surrounding his grandfather.
John Alsop artist of Milngavie is listed in the Glasgow Post Office Directory 1886-87 which I assume is JJ & not his Uncle, but might be wrong as he would then only be 19 or 20. JJ's father Fred is also listed in this same addition (he exhibited at Edinburgh, Glasgow & London). JJ gets a mention in the Dictionary of British Art volume 1V by Christopher Wood 'Alsop JJ RBA fl 1892-1894 London landscape and portrait painter. Exhib at Suffolk Street onlly 1892 -1894'.
Oh I've just noticed that in the list of exhibits at The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts 1861 - 1989, JJ exhibited in 1902 whilst living at 12a Edith Terrace entitled 'Study of a head' £50. In the same list J Alsop of Airy Bank, Milngavie exhibited in 1889 'Portrait' & 1890 3 paintings 'September', 'Summer' & 'Portrait. As Airy Bank is the home address of JJ rather than John snr maybe they are all the work of John jnr - who can be sure!
Anyway I think I've confused you & myself enough for one night! Look forward to hearing from you & confusing you some more!
   Kay

Hi Kay - sorry not to get back to you sooner - just too many things on the go at once.  Very quickly - as my 3 year old is getting bored (!) the JJ Alsop I've come across was a member of the Royal Brimingham Society of Artists  - don't know how this fits with Scotland or Chelsea...  Not a relative of mine (as far as I know!) but I'm just wondering if I've pcikied up a little gem.  will try and attach photos of my picture now.  One of these days I'll get into genealogy but at the moment I'm spending all my time on eBay.
Best wishes
Alison

Hi Alison, Thanks for the photos, brilliant info for me, it's the first painting I'm aware of that was not of a British scene, so I can assume he travelled abroad. I have no knowledge of art so can't advise on the 'little gem' scenario but have been advised by an art gallery owner that one of his father's paintings was 'naive'.
I appreciate you are busy, so will not bombard you with info or queries but feel free to ask me anything you like & this time I will try to answer succinctly!
Thanks again, your help is very much appreciated, Kay

Hi there Kayzee,

I know that this reply is two years old and the thread doesn't indicate whether or not you have uncovered the information that you wanted about John Alsop, born circa 1865 in Glasgow, to Frederick and Annie S Alsop, both born in England (Annie S certainly born in Birmingham).  My information more directly concerns John's elder brother Frederick William Alsop, but may be of some interest to you.

Their father appears to have been in the Iron Foundry business (unfortunately one cannot see the original mss on ancestry for the censuses, so have no idea what the garbled transcription means).  Frederick William became a Leather Merchant; another brother, Harry also became some sort of Merchant.  Their mother and FWA, Harry and daughter Jessie, together with her husband, can be found in London in 1891; where everyone else was I've no idea, but Annie/Anne/Ann S Alsop was recorded as a Wife, not Widow.  They were living at 2 Struann Villas, Market St.,  Finchley, Middlesex.  (RG12/1055 F111 p.14 GSU: 6096165).

FWA married Marie Julie Lienard, daughter of Wine Merchant Karl Pierre Lienard of Saumur France and Emily Rishworth, second daughter of Thomas Rishworth and Mary Cornelia Hunt  (the Rishworths are my connection).  Both FWA and MJR were in their later 30s when they married.

FWA died in 1922 in Northamptonshire and one of the people he made an executor was his brother John Alsop, artist (I can give you the citation for this if you wish).

If I can help in any way, please let me know.

All the very best,
Anne 8)

Hi Anne,
Thank you for all that information. I can confirm everything you have said, but I hadn't looked for the parents of Emily Rishworth, so thank you for that. However, BIG news for me is that FWA left a will - I would be VERY interested in any details you might have.
I'm sorry that I can not help you with any Rishworth information, but have much info on FWA, including a picture of him & a photo of one of his paintings. I think that he was an iron bedstead merchant before he was a leather merchant. Later he was part of Heinemann, Alsop & co, shoe manufacturers of Northampton & Leicester, but perhaps you already know that.
His grandfather was a doctor who died of cholera & with the help of people on this site, I have recently been able to find letters he wrote to various newspapers with his thoughts on the contagiousness of the disease.
Thanks to another query on this wonderful site, I am also now  intouch with FWA's grandson. I will be happy to tell you all I know - although if you want his full ancestry back to his Derbyshire roots in the early 1600s, it might take some time to type up!!
Look forward to hearing from you,
Kay
PS
I will send my e-mail address via a personal message, as there will be too much information for this forum

Hi I just came across your posting ...I don't know anything about the artist, but I am the current owner of 12a Edith Terrace, Chelsea.  I'd  be interested to find out more about JJ Alsop and maybe get a blue plaque put up.  I'm told Marianne Faithfull also lived here in the sixties!

By the way the property is for sale if anyone's interested in buying it:

Hi CJ2002,
Firstly, can I apologise if I did not reply to your posting of May 2011 - I certainly remember reading it & was grateful for the information.  Sometimes when I get several replies to various queries, I get a bit lost!
From memory the address was from an entry for the exhibition of one of his paintings. Can you bear with me while I check it out, as I don't have much time to spare now, but will hopefully look at it tonight or tomorrow night.

I am very very intrigued to contact you I am a direct descendant of George Frederick allsop he was my great grandfather and I know some about his work at the bank of England. My mother was brought up by both George and by clarensa. Their daughter my grandmother died at a young age and therefore my mothers upbringing was really influenced by both George and by clarensa. I know quite a bit as result of anectodatal stuff relating to my family. Infact George was quite height up eventually at the bank of England. I can tell you more but I am also interested what is your link to my family? Do be in touch and fill me in?  We do have quite a few pictures of the family and many photos which highlight elements in their life. I am also intrigued about the tourner family. I would be very interested to now more of your findings and research. I hope this finds you soon.
Please do be in touch. Yours Andrew kean-hammerson.

Hi Andrew,
How nice to hear from you. In answer to your question as to how I am connected to your family, my husband's gt-gt-grandfather was a brother to George Frederick's father. I know it is a very distant connection, but the tree has been so interesting that we have kept going on & on. The result is that when I get a contact, it takes me quite some time to sort out what information I have!
I have your parents names on my tree (information from the family gatherings of the 1950s) & I would love to share information, but I shall send you a personal mail, as it is too much information for this forum.

Hi I came across your messages, I'm not sure when they were posted.  Have you found the info you needed regarding 12a Edith Terrace.  I have that 1901 census if you still need it.  Regards Marian

Hi Marian,
Welcome to rootschat. Thank you for your interest, but I do have the 1901 census detail. As you become more familiar with the site, you will notice that the dates of postings are at the top of each message. Not that it means people are not still interested to hear of information even long after a posting. Good luck with your searches.
