I am new to this list and am working on a theory that John Agnew Shaw may be related to our family.
I am particularly interested in any children they had and I know they were in the Kaiapoi, NZ area as they were there in the 1860's-1870's.
I am trying also to work out if a J.A Shaw accountant in Fremantle, Western Australia in the 1890's could be the above man or a son. John Agnew Shaw died in Kalgoorlie in 1913 and his wife Caroline Anne Cregoe who he married in 1863 in Cheltenham England died in 1935 in Victoria. It looks like she was abandoned but she was an independent woman of means and he was supposedly a gentleman. I am also wondering if there were any shipping records for them.
Cheers O'Neill

I am wondering if any lister has access to the 1893 Electoral roll ( first with women listed)
I am looking for the above couple in Kaiapoi.
I am trying to work out if this Shaw John A is the father of a child in Fremantle W.A or if I am totally off the beaten track. He does show up in 1903 in Kalgoorlie, WA living with his son Robert Gilkinson Cregoe Shaw. He never leaves Kalgoorlie after this and died there in 1913. His wife died in Victoria in 1935 but she may have been left behind in New Zealand for a few years before this
Is there any earlier electoral rolls that may have John A Shaw on it stating what his occupation was?
Thank you
Gay O'Neill in Western Australia.
-
Hi O'Neill,
On the cards for the children's babtisms, John's occupation was listed as a carter on some of them and a fellmonger on others.
I'm sure someone else can help you with the electoral rolls!
Kind regards,
Stephanie

Maybe it is an omission????

Thanks to Kea and Althea. The reason I am looking for this man is to find out if he could be the John A Shaw accountant - commissioning agent that is in Fremantle Western Australia and is the father of Ruby Beatrice Shaw mother Blanche Osmond born 1893.
I am trying to work out if John Agnew Shaw born 1834 who has 13 children with Caroline Anne Cregoe a woman of means and now he is a man of means..gold digging money from Victoria prior to their marriage in 1863 in Cheltenham in England. They then have the children in New Zealand but he turns up in Kalgoorlie living with his son the council treasurer (accountant) for Kalgoorlie and he does not go home. He died in 1913 in Kalgoorlie and I have tracked him every year from 1903 to 1913. Another of the sons is known to be an accountant in Victoria.
There is a John A Shaw - Shaw and Co J.A accountants who is in Fremantle, Western Australia in the electoral rolls of 1893..not 1892 or 1894 and he has a notation against his name in the rate books of 1893 - commissioning agent left the coloney.
Then comes the birth in 1893 of Ruby Beatrice Shaw whose mother goes to live in Kalgoorlie, WA and works as a housekeeper in the hotels of Kal. She left the child behind in Fremantle and then took her to live with her in Kalgoorlie in 1903..same time as John Agnew Shaw turns up.
So my conundrum is working out if he is the rascally devil who got a young girl 40 years his junior pregnant. Blanch Osmond never married..called herself a widow and raised her daughter changing the childs name to Maude Alice Osmond in Kalgoorlie. Maude Alice Osmond (now known to be Ruby Beatrice Shaw) married my husbands grandfather Michael O'Neill in 1911.
Thanks for all your help - what a lovely group.

Hi O'Neill
There are Letters of Admin on Archway
http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/
for Caroline SHAW, widow, Rangiora, filed 1938 which would fit in with the Electoral Roll entry that Althea found.
But you said she died in Victorai in 1935, so it would seem that the one on the 1893 Roll may not be yours.
Still, might be worth a look....
Bren.

Thanks for that Bren,
I was told that she died 1935 so I am not sure about that record. I have not been able to find it anyway searching archway. >:(

Dear roots chatters
Looking for any business reference to a wool business trading as Haynes & Shaw or Hayes and Shaw a supposedly well known firm in the Canterbury province sometime after 1863 into the 1880's.
The John Agnew Shaw and Caroline Cregoe Shaw that was part of this business lived and had 13 children in the Kaiapoi area.
John Shaw was listed as a carter in the 1881 census.
I have just recieved an article written about John Agnew Shaw on his death in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia 1913.
His widow never lived with him in Kalgoorlie where he resided from 1903. She died in Victoria as an independent woman of means in 1935.
Any hints as to where I might find info on the company would be greatfully recieved. I have googled but to no success.

Papers past search shows businesses for HAYNES.
If in christchurch you may need to randomly search some of the papers adverts over those periods, as the star is not yet searhable

There was the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills - you get plenty of hits if you google....

HI thanks for all the hints and links for me to search. Unfortunately I am in Western Australia so the archives is a bit difficult to get to or to search the newspapers sigh!.
Not to worry I have been known to get on a plane and fly to New Zealand once I am on the the right information. I discovered my grandfather William Benjamin Lyons was born in New Zealand in the Otago area in 1871. I followed his parents footsteps from Victoria, to Hokitika Bridget Dwyer arrived in February 1866 and Patrick William Lyons arrived Greymouth in March 1866. Their first baby Ellen was born in July in Hogsburn (Naseby) in 1866 and Patrick Lyons and Bridget Dwyer then married in Dunedin in October 1866. So to cut a long story short I went to each place that they had been ending up in Lawrence and Gabriell's Gully where the last of the children were born before the family went back to Victoria in 1872.
Anyway enough of my ramblings.
Warm regards O'Neill

Hi and thanks for this groups wonderful help.
Think I am getting a bit confused. I am looking for a Caroline Anne Cregoe Shaw not an O'Neill.
It was a possible daughter of John Agnew Shaw and another woman..who had the child who married an O'Neill and that was on this side of the earth..Western Australia in 1911.
Having said that again I really really appreciate any little finds on the rascally John Agnew Shaw who I think managed to have a child with a woman 38 years his junior while still being married. I do not want to ruin his good reputation however - he was listed in a gentleman's magazine in 1863 when he married Caroline Anne Cregoe and I need to prove it is he who got around.
His wife Caroline Shaw died in Victoria in 1935 while he was in Western Australia on his own (he did lie with his very respectable son Robert Gilkinson Cregoe Shaw who was the municipal treasure for the Kalgoorlie Council. John Agnew Shaw was in Kalgoorlie from 1903 - 1913 where he died and is buried.
Cheers O'Neill
