Ok second post here! and three weeks into this!
Manged to trace my ancestors back to Alfred Waddilove born about 1846/7 In St Pancras London. I have looked through the birth records on Ancestry for 46, 47 and 48 and can not find him. What do I next?
I have looked at the 1851 census and there is an Alfred Waddilove born around 1846, is this the right one?

Hi Robert,
It may be that his birth was not registered, although registration began in 1837 it was not mandatory until about the 1870,s.
Have you checked the complete bmds on Ancestry ???
You would need to go through the parish registers for St.Pancras to find a baptism.
Unfortunately St. Pancras is a large district, from what I can see it could be in one of 8 church's but it does say that only 88% of records have been deposited.
I have looked at the 1851 census and there is an Alfred Waddilove born around 1846, is this the right one
You could tell if you could find his baptism.
As it as unusual surname and the age is correct, it could be the right one. :-\

Hi
Every so often in this game you have to buy a certificate to prove what you have found. In this case you might be wise to buy Alfred's marriage certificate so that you know positively who his father was and what his occupation was. Then you will have a better idea about whether the 1851 census is the right one. It is annoying to have to pay out but has to be done (unless you can find the church record) to make sure you are not following the wrong line. It would also give an age for Alfred. Always worth widening the search for a birth too as ages on census did vary.

I can't locate the birth regs of his (possible) siblings - George, Emily and Annie who according to 1851 census were born in different areas.
There is a john who was under 2 yrs old in 1841 -cannot find his birth reg either -or further trace of him
Also I cannot find a death reg of their father.
Maybe they didn't reg any births?? Or deaths???????
Do you have Alfred's marriage cert? It would be interesting to see who his father was- from 1841 it looks as if it could be Edward (Boot maker)
A puzzle!

Hi Robert,
It may be that his birth was not registered, although registration began in 1837 it was not mandatory until about the 1870,s.
To be correct there was no penalty for non-registration (within 42 days). The Act of 1836 omitted to impose any penalty for failure by the parent to register a birth, an omission which was rectified only by the Births and Deaths Registration Act of 1874 which made such failure punishable by a fine of £2.00. Registration was compulsory in the case of the Registrar. The onus was on him to collect births and deaths and he could be fined for failure to register them. In carrying out his duties the parents were compelled, under the Act to supply the information when asked.
The registrars also had an incentive to register as they were paid for the entries viz. for the first Twenty Entries of Births and Deaths in every Year which he shall have registered, whether the same be of Births or of Deaths indiscriminately, Two Shillings and Sixpence each, and One Shilling for every subsequent Entry of Births or Deaths in each Year. In fact two registrars were jailed for fraudulent entries. In one case births and the other births and deaths.
There are a number of cases in the early years of registration where people were taken to court and fined for refusing to supply the information to the Registrar when asked.
