Census Lookup 1861/1871
Help appreciated please!
In 1881, John G. Jones head, 70, born Liverpool,
Secretary Lpool College (Clerk)
Wife - Anne C. Jones 62, born Lpool
John and Anne were living at 10 Rupert Lane, Everton, Lancashire
I just found two very small envelopes, one with Stamp date 1840!
Address on envelope was Lyceum, Liverpool
The second envelope stamp date was 1850 with address
10 Rupert Lane, Everton, Liverpool, same as above, in 1881 Census.
So I thought a search in previous censuses may reveal
more information on this Jones family.
I do know of a William Jones b: 1801 in Shropshire who married an
Elizabeth Edmonds in Kerry, Montgomery. Elizabeth was
christened April 1, 1811, Kerry Montgomery.
So not sure how the JG Jones family in Liverpool are related to the
Montgomery Jones.

Hi Daisy, i know this is not a look up[ i don't have that facility]
but the lyceum is probably the theatre that stood in the area. It became a cinema, but is now pulled down. Rupert Lane was part of a junction called ''Four Lane Ends'' and is not far from Prince Rupert Hill in Everton. It overlooks Liverpool and was used by Prince Rupert as his Head Quarters from which he fired artillery on the 'Parliamentaty' supporters, and although he ultimately lost the battle, his name is still remembered in 'Street Names' locally. Rupert Lane and the Lyceum were quite close to one another, so possibly he was at work in the Lyceum when the census was taken.

Found on familysearch:
Richard JONES
Married: Jane CANE, 20th October 1809, Saint Nicholas, Liverpool
-
There are a few possibilities on familysearch for the Birth/Christening of a 'Jane CAIN, C1773-4, I.O.M.):
1. Christened: 17th October 1773,Ramsey, Isle Of Man
Parents: Patrick CAIN & Margaret COWLE
2. Christened: 26th June 1774, Ramsey, Isle Of Man
Parents: Edward CAIN & Catherine CANNELL
3. Christened: 21st October 1774, Saint Marks, Isle Of Man
Parents: Wm CAIN & Marg CALLOW
The last one (3.) possibly died quite soon after birth, as I also found the following:
Jane CAIN, Christened: 21st December 1775, Saint Marks, Isle Of Man, Parents: Wm CAIN & Margaret CALLOW

Hi
Cain is quite a common surname in the IOM
Carole.
Yes I know, that's what makes it some what of a Challange! ::) ;)
-
Hi Pegasuss
It can certainly be that - I had the "Cain" problem a few years ago on another post which is how I know it was popular. It's easier when they have uncommon christian names ( I was looking for John at the time!!)

Carole.
Same kind of Challenge as My Owen OWENS, Bn in Caernarvonshire? :o ::) ;)

LYCEUM Building
I am not sure if there is more than one Lyceum building.
Searching through www, I found a beautiful image of the
Lyceum Building on Bold Street in Liverpool, taken May 30, 2007.
It is often referred to as the 'Greek temple' and built 1800-2.
Name at top of building is Lyceum Post Office. At street level building is
used by The Cooperative Bank.
The building that you referred to might have also used the
name Lyceum, but I think the address on my very old envelope is
directed towards this Lyceum Post Office. There is also a possibility
that this building was first used as a gentlemens' club when it was first built!
Thank you buskin for replying to my post. I do appreciate it!

To: Pegasuss and CaroleW
Thank you for the Census information. Greatly appreciated!
My mother travelled to England three times in her
later years to visit relatives in Liverpool/Wirral.
On one of these visits, she must have been given these two
envelopes, mainly because of her interest in 'stamps'. Neither
contained a note in them, unfortunately.
I was hoping the Census information would have listed the name
William Jones, but it did not. William was born 1801 in Bettws,
Shropshire, England, before marrying Elizabeth Edmonds (b: 1811)
in Kerry, Montgomery, Wales. The Jones family, in late 1800s, moved
to Wallasey/Poulton cum Seacombe.
It is likely that there is some connection between this William Jones and
JG Jones of Liverpool, but I am not sure what it is right now.
Many thanks Pegasuss and CaroleW for your help!
Best regards

Hi English Daisy,
I am 4 g-grandson to JG Jones. His father was Richard Jones, and according to JG Jones' marriage certificate his father was at the time the Master of the Lyceum. The marriage registration indicates that JG Jones was at the time of his marriage the Secretary to the Liverpool Collegiate Institution when he married his second wife Anne Cecilia Jones (20 Dec 1851). This institution is now Liverpool University. (I am longing to obtain background information on JG Jones' service at the Collegiate Institution and his father's time as the Master of the Lyceum)
The Lyceum is the building on Bold street, that was considered the first (lending) library in Europe, and then many years later became the head office for the Liverpool Post Office. Mr. Harrison of Chester was the architect
Richard Jones' and his wife Jane Cain's first son is William Henry Jones, born about 1810
How can I contact you with regard to obtaining copies of the envelopes.
For those who have an interest in Latim American history, John Jones (later became to be known as Don Juan Syers-Jones) son of JG Jones was a prominent businessman in the lucrative Nitrate trade between the UK and Chile in the late 1890's..

Hello jackie2000
I understand you are trying to contact me regarding a
John Gregory Jones.
How can I help you?

Hi English Daisy
That was quick!!!
Absolutely amazed to see your posting about the little envelopes you had. Wondering if you still had them. I am compiling a book for my friend on her Syers/Gregory Jones's. She is the ggreat grand-daughter of John Gregory Jones. Would it be an imposition to ask if there was any chance of scanned images of them - she would be absolutely delighted to actually see a little bit of history? I have discovered that he was amongst the original founders of the Liverpool Chess League...one of the hottest in the country during the 19thC. Sadly, the family lost their fortune by heavily investing in the mines which went bust in Chile and Peru.
It would be fantastic if I could share any information with Bruce Duncan, if he still visits these boards, or anyone else connected. Seems he may have an English cousin living in Australia

I am not sure whether anyone is still on this forum. My wife is a direct descendant of of John Gregory Jones through his son Alfred Litherland Jones. I have compiled a fairly extensive version of the family tree from the family archives going back to John Jones of Dyserth who was his grandfather.
JGJ's first wife and mother of all his children was Louisa Williamson who died in 1850, probably in childbirth with his 10th child who was also born and died that year. Louisa came from the Williamson family who were well known local artists and gave their name to the Wiliamson Gallery in Liverpool.
If anybody is interested, please contact me further.
