Title: James Craig = Elizabeth?
Post by: kooky on Tuesday 09 October 07 15:14 BST (UK)
I have James Craig 44, and wife Elizabeth 41, in Preston in 1881 census with 7 children. Son William was aged 18.

I have found a marriage in M/c June 1859 8d 200 for James. When I click on the number for a spouse, there are only 3 names. No Elizabeth!

Can anybody help?

Also I can not find them on 1871 census, only possible daughter Ada with Stanley relatives in Birkenhead.

Have you traced the family back through the censuses to try and see whether this might have been the marriage date, or whether there were clues to another marriage?

The one I have found for 1859 in Manchester Cathedral was James Craig to Sarah A Yates.

I think this is possibly the one as the reference for Sarah Ann looks like ?? 200, matching the 8d 200 Manchester for James.

I get a feeling that there may be something not quite .... maybe a second marriage for one of them and if it is Elizabeth then the other older children might well have a different name.

My suggestion would be to get the birth certificate for one of the children and see what it says -

Joseph Craig Q1 1879 Preston 8e 602 would be the most recent.

Thank you Mary A
I am doing this for someone else and have no budget.
I would just like to know Elizabeth's maiden name.
All the children on 1881 census are called Craig.

For the benefit of anybody else attempting to help here, this is the 1881 census - the birthplaces should be of enormous help but it means anybody else has to search for it before they know them.

257 Ribbleton Lane, Trinity, Preston, Lancashire
James Craig Head Mar 44 Labourer in Iron Foundry Cumberland Cockermouth
Elizabeth Wife M 41 Lancashire Manchester
William son Unm 18 Piecer in Cotton Mill Lancashire Preston
Sarah daur Unm 17 Cotton Carder Lancashire Manchester
Ada daur 14                   "     Cheshire Birkenhead
John son 11 Cotton Creeler         " "
Francis Son 9 Scholar                   " "
James son 7       "                        " "
Joseph son 2  Lancashire Preston
RG11; Piece: 4226; Folio: 72; Page: 9

There's a lot of moving about here so different places are looked at, not just Preston and/or Manchedster

Unfortunately the only way to find out the mother's maiden name will be from the birth of one of the children, perhaps you could spend time at the Record Office checking the baptisms there instead, maybe you'd have a bit of luck.

Kooky.

I found the Birth Record for 'Francis CRAIG, 1871, Birkenhead, Wirral, Cheshire', on:

http://cheshirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi?county=cheshire

You can Print off the 'Application for Birth Certificate' from this site (Ref: Wirral : BIR/87/24)

This should give You an Address for the Family?

Sorry! It is over 2 years since I initiated this post. I was doing the research for someone else. I had forgotten all about it.
If Andrew perseveres he will find that this is the most welcoming, friendly and safe site on the web!
