Post by: Questa on Saturday 06 October 07 06:05 BST (UK)
Hi there.

Just wondering where I could get some information on when and on what ship Patrick and Hannah DIXON came over to Australia on?

James, George, Sidney, Patrick, Francis were some of their children that may of came with them.

Hi

You can search on http://www.findmypast.com

Free to search but pay to view transcript.

There is a Hannah DIXON age 37 in 1914

Another site you may search in Unassisted Immigration to Victoria

http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23

Do you know which Port they arrived in.

Cheers

Im 99% sure they came into Sydney.

I wish I could get the extra info from findmypast. I haven't got a credit card or anything like that.

further to cando's post...

searching just on the surname, the year, and the destination brought up other Dixons that may or may not be on the same voyage.

among them...
Francis (male) aged 8
James aged 9
no Sidney
Pat aged 18
George aged 50

fROM FINDMYPAST:

Sailed from London to Australia 30.9.1914, destination Brisbane  -  ship "Marathon", the Aberdeen Line, Master:  P.J. Collins, registered tonnage: 4955. Onboard 245 adult passengers, 73 children, 5 infants.

The following passengers travelled 3rd class, and the port at which they had contracted to land was Sydney:

DIXON Mrs. Hannah   Housewife  age 37           England
                Patrick             Wharf Labourer 18                "
                Hannah           Nil                       17               "
                Ellen                 "                         15               "
                James               "                         9                "
                Francis              "                         8                "
                Sarah                "                         6                "

There was no husband for Hannah. Could she have been a widow?  Maybe her husband had emigrated earlier, so I looked for him 1908-1913. I found a P.B. Dixon departed London for Sydney 26.10.1912 on ship "Orama". There were only 2 other P. Dixon names for that period (no 'Patrick'), and the other 2 went to Brisbane and Melbourne. So this one is a likely prospect.  Sorry, but I did not have enough spare credits to look at the original manifest, only the transcript.

Thanks guys. I never even thought of Patrick and Hannah coming over on different ships!  ::)

I have since found out that sidney was only a middle name of one of the sons born in Australia. They had 18 children all up!

I have more lovely leads to follow up one now :)

If you want info about the ships above, you can get description on www.theshipslist.com and pictures on http://nla.gov.au (go to Picture Australia).
Get the descriptions first, as there was more than one ship bearing each of these names, and the description will help identify the correct photo.
