Title: Martha Later - I'm confused!
Post by: Raylen on Friday 05 October 07 11:32 BST (UK)
Please help this poor confused soul. ???

I have Martha Later born abt 1803 in Bowden,Cheshire
married to Richard Jones  in 1822  Bowden,St Mary,Cheshire

Then I think she married John Stewart in 1859 Altrincham,Cheshire

I have her on 1881 census as Martha Later (widow) but I can't seem to
find her on earlier census lists. Her children are proving difficult to find as well.

Would it be usual for a widow to use her maiden name and change her childrens names too?

Can anyone help me find her on any other census please?

Any help would be great

Thanks
Raylen

Hi Raylen -
Firstly the Later/Jones marriage - I've traced it on the IGI and it a "submitted" entry, not an "extracted" entry, so you may want to ask someone to do a look up in the parish records.
Second - the Later/Stewart marriage is on Cheshire BMD at St Martin's, Ashton on Mersey - I'm assuming this is the one you've got - AoM would be in Altrincham district then. However Cheshire BMD is pretty good at *ing names where there's an alternative as you'd expect if this was a widow remarrying and there's no * on this entry, so without seeing the register/certificate my gut feeling is that suzard has the answer - this is a daughter's marriage.

Again it's a gut feeling but I'd be looking for a marriage between Martha ??? and a Mr ??? Later. Have you found Martha (b 1803) on the 1841 or 1851 census? You could ask for a marriage lookup on this thread

I have the martha later (same one as from 1861) on all census from 1841-1881- no husband present on any census - -she has 6 children

I have found 1851

Richard Jones Head 45 Wales not known
Martha wife 46 Stockport
henry son 22 Factory hand
Richard son 17 Factory Hand
David son 14 Factory hand

Theres an interesting entry on familysearch IGI, stating that her daughter Martha was born in Dunham, Missisquoi, Quebec, parents Thomas and Martha Later, but chr. 24/03/1837 Bowden Cheshire!!  :-\

(and for Ellen and Maria!)

1841
Dunham Massey
Bowden
Cheshire
Martha later 35 Farmer
William 12
Thomas 6
Maria 11
Ellen 9
Elizabeth 7
Martha 5
Richard Allman 20 ag lab
James Rawlinson 20 ag lab
James Holt 20 ag lab
William Owen 15 ag lab
Samuel Lucas 12 ag lab
Hannah Holt 60 ag lab
Margaret Shaw 17 ag lab
all stated as b in county (except margaret Shaw)
HO107 91 5 5

maybe this is the Martha m to Thomas Later on family search???

on no census does it state martha (jnr) b. Quebec though!

wonder if on family search Dunham Missisqui Quebec has been mistranscribed and should be Dunham massey Cheshire???
The writing is pretty difficult to read on 1841!!!

Hello Raylen

A couple of additional thoughts.
A few days ago SU posted on this Cheshire board a link to a new site providing Tithe Map details
. If you go to it and key in LATER you should be able to find details of their farm in Dunham Messey (Sinderland is part of it.      Parish is Bowdon, Township is Dunham Massey, Hamlet is Sinderland.)

A will was probated in 1839 for Thomas Later (The Younger) of Sinderland.  Try this link
http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/Recordoffice/Wills/Search.htm   Bur was he your Martha's husband?   The occupier on the Tithe Apportionment (See above) was Thomas Later.

You are likely to find Baptism Marraige and Burial details at Bowdon Church.  That 1837 date for young Martha in 1837 in Dunham Massey-sippi  :) :) :) :).matches Martha's age based on Census returns.  Unfortunately it is 6 months before civil registration  :(

I hope this adds something and that I havn't repeated what others have said too much.
How much do you know of the area?

Regards
Reiver

Oh dear!  I think I have gone off on the wrong family!! ::)

What I have as confirmed is:
Henry Jones b 26/12/1829 Liverpool ( maybe Everton)(came to Australia in 1851)
Father: Richard Mother: Martha Later
(other children Richard 1831,Mary 1830,Elizabeth 1832, & Sarah Anne 1827 all born Liverpool)

Marriage of Richard & Martha confirmed as ' 30/12/1822 at Bowden St Mary Cheshire
Martha Later to Richard Jones of Liverpool by banns'

I'm trying to find them all on the census so I think I should start again with fresh ideas
and, if I run into trouble, should I put this on the Lancashire board?

To toni*,mshrmh,CatOne,,Suz and Reiver, thank you all so much for your help.
I really appreciate the time you take to answer anyones questions.
Even confused people like me :-\

Thanks again
Raylen

The National Burials Index has quite a few 'Later' entries for Bowden (Blessed Virgin Mary) in Cheshire. These two caught my eye:

Thomas LATER (age 37) on 18 Aug 1839
Martha LATER (age 84) on 13 Jan 1886

This Martha is obviously the widow who crops up in the various Census returns.

Clearly she was not the mother of Henry Jones. However, her late husband Thomas (possibly the one listed above) might well have been Henry's uncle - i.e. the brother of Martha Jones (nee Later).

This burial may at Bowden may also turn out to be relevant:

Thomas LATER (age 78) on 6 Mar 1842

Maybe Henry's grandfather?

Hi Raylen - glad you're finding your way through the puzzle - seems as though you're looking for a Jones family, probably in Liverpool in 1841 - best of luck!

PS - nowadays the spelling is Bowdon - like many use varied in times gone by.

Thank you Dave for that information.
It has filled another couple of gaps in the family tree.

To mshrmh,
I feel I am making a little progress.  I have found that the daughter(Elizabeth)
of the widow Martha that has been mentioned here- married the son of
Richard Jones and Martha Later!  So even though I was confused,
the information that was posted here has helped make things clearer for me.

Once again a BIG thank you to you all for your help.
