Hi Steve.

Children.
1. "female", born 4 May 1868, Doagh.
2.  "male" ,  born 30 March 1872, Doagh.

The three below you may have got from my previous postings for Carnmoney Presbyterian baptisms.
1. Samuel, bapt., 7 May 1862.
2. Andrew, bapt., 13 March 1864.
3. Matilda, bapt., 2 June 1866.

Capt. Steve,

William SHERRARD
bapt. 06-MAY-1856
Randalstown 2nd Pb

He was the 5th child of
  John SHERRARD [of Ballyearl]
  Martha WHITTLE(Y) [of Kingsbog]

[JS was the first Railway Stationmaster at Randalstown.]

Not sure where WS ended up.
[But I know someone who might!]

A number of the children (of the 14 offspring in the family) emigrated to Philadelpia, USA:
Mary Jane SHERRARD (m. Henry WHITTLEY)
  David SHERRARD
  Samuel Scott SHERRARD
  Eliza Moore SHERRARD
  Annie Wallace SHERRARD

Martha also went there in 1890 after JS had died in Belfast .

Not sure if that helps you.
lf not, try contacting the SHERRARD family-tree oracles in Lisburn/Ballyclare.

Capt.

I had discounted him as he would have been only 14 at my GGG Grandfathers Samuel O'Neils death...in Ballyvessey.

Thought he might be a bit young...have discounted the others......beginning to think we have a new one to add to the oracle ;D

Capt. Steve,

Hey. what sort of game of rugby football is this you are playing?

Moving the goal posts after the whistle!
[Expect you chatted up the Ref before the game as well ...]

How can someone be "too young" for someone else's demise?!

Anyway, let me try to dribble this one in to the scoring zone ...

    William SHERRARD b. 11-APR-1824
    m. Susanna McCORMICK
    Templepatrick Pb

Son of ...

    James SHERRARD (SH EARER)
    Jane McCLINTOCK

There are a few more out-liers to the West, but no need to look Southward any more.
[Advance Australia, nae mair!]

Capt

I have him dead by then,,,,,,,Blimey

so I either have one too many dead or one too many alive.....

so you think someone would not be too young to be a witness on a death cert then..?

Capt. Steve,

Be careful that you don't get penalised for not having the "correct" number of "correct" men on the field at any one time!

Tentative Guess of your scenario:

You have a death record

   of            <somebody>
who died <somewhere in Co. Antrim>
   in             <1880>

A WS signed as a witness to the event.

Your research goal is to identify his genealogical context.

Your assumption is that

     P) in order to have been a witness
           he must have been of full age (21);

so C) can not have been born after 1860.

I can't comment on whether this premise (and hence conclusion) is securely valid.

Can only note that it was common for "children" of 14 (12?) to be in full time employment at the time, so they may have been considered mature enough to be classed as valid witnesss.

So perhaps someone born as late as 1868 might have sufficed ...

[Note: The rules of the game were pretty loose at the time - sometimes several hundred players were allowed on the field!]

Wobbly ball back to you ...

Why did you think he was dead by then? I am getting lost here - send me an update sis before I tear all my hair out!

Capt. Steve,

Uh, oh!
1880 - 1856 = 24 (not 14)

So perhaps that first player is still onside ?

Capt.

Wobbly ball hit me in the head.... ;D

I have spent hours...tidying up...sorting out....filing away...banging my head on the wall.

must get some puter thingy...instead of wallpaper

the moral to this story is......

1   keep up with your information
2   file away in the right place
3   never assume
4   keep accurate records..where/when and any record codes etc.
5   ask the right questions

so now

Samuel O'Neil dies in 1871

William Sherrard is present
aged 14 ,15 or 47

Samuel O'Neill Jr  (wife Margaret McMillan) has a daughter Susannah born 4 months later from Samuel O'Neill's Sr demise..(filled in wrong place).

so YES first player still on

so I am now assuming that William is ..........oops...not allowed....but could be a link to Samuel O'Neill's Snr spouse....

can we play tennis now please. :-[

Steve

;D...wonderful stuff...good to nosey in on others' research for a change and see it can be just as confusing as one's own...especially love and can empathise with the moral... ;D
