I have searched on Rootschat, IGI and on Google and it appears that there are no parish records for this parish before about 1813. Am I right?
There are several requests for look ups on the Surrey board over quite a long period, and most don't seem to have replies, but I could not find a definite answer as to whether they exist or not.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks very much.

Bonjour Escargot :D
I've attached a small image from the Phillimore atlas, St Mary's pr's appear to start 1561
The pr's have been transcribed from 1813 for the IGI
The pr's have been deposited at the London Metropolitan Archives, that's what the C means, and are most probably available to view there on microfilm

'Allo 'Allo Dawn, :)
(That's all the French I can manage!)
How very kind of you to reply and post the image. I thought perhaps it meant another dead end in my research, but I can carry on a little further, hopefully, very slowly.....

Hi Escargot
Is there anything specific that you need looking up?

Hi Dawn,
That is most kind of you. I am looking to find where the family of Mary WILLIAMS are from. She married my Gt Gt Grandfather Richard MERRITT (b.1806), at St. Mary Newington on 4th September 1826 and I was looking for her baptism and parents.
They (Richard and Mary) went on to have 8 children all baptized at St.Mark Kennington. Richard Merritt was baptized at Holy Trinity, Clapham.

Hi Escargot
At last, an update for you.
The LMA has re-opened although not fully. Last week people were queueing for fiche/film readers, this week there were spare ones.
So Richard Merritt married Mary Williams at St Mary Newington 1826 (from IGI?). I had a look at this entry, both were of the parish and the witnesses were 'Henry Williams' and Sarah Cooper, who signed her mark.
Henry seems like a good candidate for being her father.
I'll be there again next week so if you still need the baptism I'll look for you.

Dear Dawn,
Thank you very much for confirming that marriage for me. If it is no trouble the baptism would be great, but no rush. I am so grateful to you for taking time to help me.
Hope everything has been going well for you.
Regards
Escargot.

To be of a parish on marriage just requires three weeks residency prior to the marriage taking place, it doesn't unfortunately indicate that a person has been born in the parish or lived there for any longer length of time.
Is this Richard Merritt on the 1841 and 1851 censuses?
1841 census HO107 1058/10 folio 41
St Albans Terrace Lambeth
Richard Merrett 39 Packer & Upholsterer not born Surrey
Mary Merrett 38 not born Surrey
plus 1 female servant
1851 census HO107 1572? folio 797
3 Olave Place Lambeth
Richd Merritt 44 Head Married Chairmaker Clapham Surrey
Elizabeth Merritt 59 Wife Married Bermondsey Surrey
Martha Merritt 8 Daughter Lambeth Surrey
Charles Merritt 7 Son Lambeth Surrey
Children baptised St Mark Kennington to parents Richard and Mary.
The two censuses indicate just how unreliable the yes and no = born in the county or not born in the county on the 1841 census can be, but doesn't necessarily mean that Mary wasn't born outside of Surrey. Have you found her death certificate - a slim chance it will give some further information from who registered the death (probably Richard or a 'nurse' who was present at death) but it may give another relative?
Richard remarried in 1847 and the last known child was born in 1843. There doesn't seem to have been a death registration for a Mary Merritt in Lambeth during that period, so is this her death registration?
Deaths Dec 1846
Merritt Mary Newington 4 264
Since the family lived in Lambeth did Mary die in Newington visiting relatives? Where were Richard and Mary's younger children on the 1841 census e.g.
GEORGE MERRITT
Birth: 30 SEP 1839
Christening: 20 OCT 1839 Saint Mark, Kennington, London
Father: RICHARD MERRITT
Mother: MARY
EMMA MERRETT
Birth: 30 JAN 1841
Christening: 28 FEB 1841 Saint Mark, Kennington, London
Father: RICHARD MERRETT
Mother: MARY
What were the names of the other 4 children? Were they alive at the time of the 1841 and 1851 censuses? Have you tracked them on the censuses to see if they were staying with relatives?
Regards

Hello Valda,
Thank you for taking an interest in this topic.
I have been researching this family for some time now, and it has been a very slow process! The family of Richard and Mary Merritt (nee Williams) are as follows:-
Richard b.1827 d.1828
Henry b.1828 poss. marr. Amy Tapley Clapham Holy Trinity 1848
Mary Ann b.1830
Sarah Ann b.1835 poss. marr. 1853 to a Boulton/Fox/Pauling
George b.1839
Emma b.1841 poss. d. 1851
Martha Ann 1842 married James Hussey 1861
Charles b.1843
These were on the IGI. They were all children of Richard and MARY.
The problem is I can't find them on the census. The nearest is the Richard, married to Elize, who is a carpenter in 1841 and on 1851 a chair maker - on the marriage certificate of Charles his occupation is Chair maker - but as you point out there are no signs of the earlier children.
I wondered if Mary was calling herself Elizabeth/Eliza.
I, too, wondered if Richard had remarried, but on IGI the last 4 children were born to Richard and MARY but the childrens names and DOB are about right on the 1851. I know that the IGI is not always correct.
I had found a poss. death for Mary in Lambeth in Jun Q 1855 and one Mary Ann Jun Q 1868 age 62 yrs (babt 1806). Thanks for the one in Newington - I had not checked that one.
I will keep looking through the census etc. and one day I will get there!
I would like to get the baptism and marriage records for Lambeth St. Mary, only seen the burials on ESFHS site on CD - unless someone out there knows different......!

Hi, I see you are posting on the Merrett family of Clapham. Some Clapham baptisms are not on the IGI (despite the fact they say they are) and the Merrett family are among them. I am descended from Henry MERRETT and Amy TAPLEY married in 1848 in Clapham. He is the son of Charles MERRETT who was born in Clapham in ~1807 but lived in Stockwell. I cannot find Henry's baptism but he is on the census.
Here are some MERRETT entries up to 1813 from Holy Trinity Clapham:
c. 14 Feb 1803 Sarah MATTHEWS 1st daughter of Richard (labourer) and Ann MERRETT [sic] (b. 26 Jan 1803) (4548)

c. 20 Jan 1805 William MERRETT 1st son of William (gardener) and Elizabeth (CARTER) (b. 12 Jan 1805) (4826)
c. 17 Mar 1805 Ann MERRETT 2nd daughter of Richard (gardener) and Ann MATTHEWS (b. 24 Feb 1805) (4835)
More Sierra Leonean baptisms on 12 May 1805
c. 6 Jul 1806 Susannah MERYETT [sic] 2nd daughter of John (smith) and Elizabeth MOULDESWORTH (b. 12 Jun 1806) (5051)
