Hello All,
I'm on the trail of my g.g.grandfather Joseph Griffiths born circa 1838 - although he's laid a difficult track to follow! :-\
On the 1881 census, he gives his birth place as Hanbury, Hereford. I've had a look at various maps/resources and can't find any Hanbury in Herefordshire.
There is a Hanbury in Worcestershire, although this would seem a bit far out of Hereford to be the same one.
On the 1891 census his birth place is listed as Hereford.
I'd really appreciate any comments/ideas.
Thanks

Have you tracked him back on 1871, 1861, 1851 censuses ? I wonder if this is a mistranscription for Tenbury, Humber or something. Did you look at the original entry ?
Any family clues at all ?

Hello EBN.
I've had a look at the original but haven't got alot of experience with old handwriting. Not sure if we're allowed to put census records on here - the source citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 31; Folio: 144; Page: 28.
I can only definately track him on the 1871-1891 census. Here's what I've got so far:
1871 census shows birth place as Hammersmith, born 1839
1881 census shows place Hanbury, Hereford, England, born 1842
1891 census shows place Hereford - born 1840
Either he was really unlucky with errors in indexing or he wasn't giving consistent information!
His marriage cert gives birth year as 1838/39. He died after the census in 1891 and there are a few Joseph Griffiths contenders on census pre-1871.
No family clues at all - he is a man of mystery!
What do you think?
Thanks

Looking at freeBMD there is only one Joseph Griffiths born Herefordshire
Joseph Griffiths birth registered Jan - March qtr 1838 Leominster 26 183
In the Leominster church records I couldn't find him, but there is a Joseph and Emma Griffiths baptising their children later.
son - Joseph Griffiths bap 15 Jul 1855
dau - Mary Emma Griffiths and others probably, any of this ring any bells. fred

Thanks Fred.
On the 1841 census there were three Joseph Griffiths born between 1836-1838. Bearing in mind the different dob in later census I'm being a bit cautious with the dates!
These three were born in Kimbolton, Eardisland and Winslow. Would any of these fit into the Leominster parish ?
I'm now trying to track them in the 1851 & 1861 census to see if, by process of elimination, I can see who maybe the right one.
Thanks again

Anthea both Kimbolton and Eardisland are very close to Leominster.
I wonder if the Winslow is meant to be Wormelow? this is South of Hereford while Leominster is to the North. In recent months I have eventually found my grandfathers marriage, the GRO have him down as Mary marrying Emily, it should say Harry. And his mother is recorded as Alcks, when her surname was Elks, so mistakes are even where you don't expect them, sometime it pays to follow a hunch and take a shot in the dark. Good luck Fred

Winslow is next to Bromyard.

To toss another idea into the discussion....
I was thinking about a Herefordian accent in Middlesex answering a census enumerator. He may only have lived where he was born for a short while, and also I notice in 1881 the enumerator has only put Bridge, Cornwall for his wife's birthplace ! Not one for accuracy perhaps ?
So, how about Croft Ambrey ? Near Leominster . There is a Joseph Griffiths aged 10 in the Parish of Eye on the 1851 Census, that is also near Croft Ambrey.
just a thought................

I think it probably refers to Avenbury - just south of Bromyard. I have found a person listed in the 1841 census as born in Hanbury, but by 1871 he was born in Bromyard. A'nbury could sound like 'anbury!
