Title: How to find a grave of ancestor
Post by: moryan on Tuesday 02 October 07 06:52 BST (UK)
Hello again,
I am so thankful for all of the information I got yesterday.  I am wondering how I go about finding cemeteries/graves/headstones etc for relatives who have been buried in Paisley?
Enjoy your day.

Moryan ::)

Hi Moryan

I have the pre 1855 Monunmental Inscription books for Renfrewshire but these would only give information if there is a headstone. But I am more than happy to have a look for you if you give me the details.

Paisley has several cemetaries tho the main two are in the link already posted but before Woodside and Hawkhead there were a number of others. Woodside is managed by the Paisley Cemetary Co ltd. Tel 0141 889 6620 and they have records going back to 1845 for Burials and from 1938 for cremations. The service isn't free but it doesn't say how much they charge. Hawkhead openend in April 1891

The burial ground records are held by the Council but beware they do charge £26 per half hour for a search.

Best wishes

Ann

Hi Ann,
I am looking for the grave of my grandmother who passed away in 1940. Do you think you could help with it???

Kind regards
Lesley

Hi Lesley

Fraid not . The records I have with gravestones are pre 1855. But if she died in Paisley in 1940 there are only three places she could be buried. Arkleston, Hawkhead or Woodside.

Do you know for sure if she was buried ? If cremated then only place would be Woodside as that is only crematorium in Paisley.

Hope that narrows it down a wee bit for you.

Ann

Hi Lesley

Had a thought. It might be worth contacting funeral directors in Paisley. The main one is the Co-operative Society. They may have records available.

This is a link to Paisley funeral directors.

Hello,
Was just wondering Ann if you could possibly find a burial or headstone in your burial book for any BRANNAN family members.  The one I am interested in is John and his wife is Ann (nee JAMISON and also a nee MCNAMARA.  Think there were 2 ladies involved with John, think maybe one d.  I'm sorry I do not have dates other than both parents had d. by 1864, oh! yours are pre 1855 anyway please have a peep just to see if anyone jumps out at you.
Actually my rellie has just posted me some info. and he said he found a christening for John on 27th Mar. 1803 at Greenoch Renfrewshire - f. John BRANNAN and m. Margaret MCDONALD. Sorry no confirmation of this info.
Have I made sense?
Hope to hear from you soon.       bee.

Sadly, some years ago, most if not all of the Co-op's funeral records were destroyed due to lack of space...... Not just in Paisley, I hasten to add, but most areas.  Company policy.

I did find info at another undertakers in Paisley, Goudie's in Maxwellton Street.

Both company's were very helpful, as was the person at the crematorium.

Good luck

Just a note, Goudie's are no longer independent but also owned by the Co-op so may have had a clear out too.

Is there some sort of database that holds all burial locations within the UK?

The National Burial Index (available on CD fraid) cover England and Wales but not Scotland. Scottish death records 1855 onwards are on Scotland;s People.

Good question! Don;t know but you'll find most things here saying they are national don't include Scotland. Find my past being a good example

Vaquez

No cos Scotland has it;s own Government site so we are sorted. And it provides online copies of the BMDs and OPRs rather than having to send off for them.

Personally I think we get a better deal cos no waiting to ambush the postman and it's cheaper for the certs too

Not that I'm an expert - but I gather they get some good things. Apparently they get much more information on their marriage certificates, I was told and can download them for £1 - anyway that's what they said on Sunday at the WDYTYA live show.

For anything 1855 onwards you get heaps of info onbirth, death and marriage certs. Parents names and maiden surnames etc all for just over £1. The OPRs are not as good - depends on how church kept the records tho on a baptism you'll get parents names. On marriage banns you don't normally get parents names. And of course no death certs pre 1855 alas!

But still good value. Would be lost without it

Thank you!  I enjoyed reading all the posts here.  I gleaned lots of information here on where to search for my uncle's burial site.  I have very limited facts but will try anyway.

I'm looking for Arthur John Robin who died at the Seaman's Hospital in Greenwich, Kent.  He was in the Merchant Navy.  He was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1915 and died 1953 in Greenwich, Kent at the Seaman's Hospital.

Thanks again!
Karola

Thank you! I know this a very belated entry.
I did find the cemetery! A distant relative gave me a clue and following that we found he was buried at Tottenham Cemetery, Northern Section off of HArt Lane. In the mean time I was going through some boxes of old photos; low-and-behold I found a photo of the grave site!

[I came here now because I just received a new entry notification.]
I can't post the photo! :( Keep getting message that it is too large.

Hello Karola.

I'm no computer gene, but I've successfully posted a few images. If you get a prompt that the file you are trying to up load is too large you can take the original photo, and rescan at a lower resolution [If your equipment gives you that option.] You can come down from 300 dpi or higher, to say 100 dpi; or you can use a re size function in most photo editing programmes. Also just save as a simple jpg file and not a full data file like a tif etc. Not a good resolution for photo quality print outs, but quite OK for the limitations of a computer screen.

There are also more technical ways of doing it that you will find on the photo restore / advice forum, like emailing to yourself in a programme that automatically downsizes the image. A saved jpg file in the range of say 150 to, I think, the limit might be 500 Kb, should come up quite OK, and not be too small to view on screen.

- Alan.

If anyone still has access to pre-1855 monumental inscriptions... I am looking for any Frazer/Fraser buried in Port Glasgow.

Many thanks,
Kathie
