Hi
Does anyone have access to the records of professional footballers from the early 1900's?
I have an ancestor, Tommy Nevins who played some type of professional football 1907 - 1913 (according to the 'since 1888' website)
My mother seems to think he played for a team such as Bishop Auckland (or somewhere in that area)
I dont really want to subscribe to the football website just to find out which team he played for!
thanks in anticipation!

Hi Shazzi
I had exactly the same question about a player about the same time. I found bits of info here and there and then when I was at Kew the other day I found a fabulous book which lists all the teams and appearances of all the league players..
It's called
Football League Players' Records 1888-1939 (Paperback) by Michael Joyce (Author)
This is the info I found for my player..
Lockett, Arthur OL/RB
B Alsager’s Bank 11/3/1877 d 1957
Caps: Flge 1/England 1
Alsager’s Bank Friendly
Audley
Cross Heath
Audley
Crewe Alexandra
Apps Goals
1900 1902 Stoke 65 7
1902 1904 Aston Villa 41 5
1905 1907 Preston North End 64 5
Watford
Mardy
Perhaps if someone were going toKew they could look it up for you...(It was in the book library section at about 796.3)
ALSO .... I then wondered if he had been in the First War so checked the military service records and found his attestation papers etc with lots more info ;D ;D

Hi Gadget... worth buying if you have lots of people to look up but for just one name it's probably a bit pricey as the info is not comprehemsive.
I was very excited with my one prof footballer ... having lots of them is very grande! Mind you...mine did play for England (just once) in 1903. ;D
If you have a list of names, teams and rough dates I could keep an eye out for pix and info when I look for my chappie if you like.
Hi Pegassus... does the PFA Who'se Who go back as far as 1900 do you know?
thanks
Milly :)

I've just asked the question - there are two in this house that have! :) 8) :)

Shazzi,
If you can't find Tommy Nevins at Bishop Auckland, give Crook Town a go. They were a Durham team who were amateur champions at the turn of the century, and later became semi professional.

Try the National Football Museum at Preston. They have details of most footballers who played in the league and for a small donation will often be able to provide details of their careers including photographs.

shazzi,
Back to your initial query.... a snippet for you, sorry it's negative...
"Professional Footballer" ???... but not at Bishop Auckland..... BA was an amateur team in that era!
Michael Dixon
Newcastle
( I myself am connected to a renowned Scotland and Newcastle footballer.. Hughie Gallacher.... but only cos that was my mother's nickname at schoolthrough her maiden name! )

Your kind invitation could not be ignored!
Our dad died 40 years ago and my brother has the idea that he may have played professional football before the war. If you could find out anything that would be brill!!!
His name was George William SMALL, born in South Shields in 1921.
TIA

Sorry Jan
He's not there. He might have played professionally for a non-league side so wouldn't appear in my book :(

Thanks for looking anyway!

Hi jan
I've also looked in the allfootballers site that I mentioned here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,258913.msg1451330.html#msg1451330
Nothing there either :(
Do you know where he lived before WW2 - was it South Shields?
Gadget
-
Thanks again for looking!
Yes - born and brought up a Geordie! He also was a good singer and regularly sang at a local pub - but no one seems tohave heard of him in that capacity either. He was the youngest son of Nicholas and Ruth who split before he was born. He lived with his mother and brothers on Alfred St.
Thanks again.

I'm wondering if it would be worth contacting the local libraries/archives to see if there is anything on him. Some have wonderful indexing systems and might find something on him for you :)

Now that's an idea...! I'd never have thought of that!
Another job to add to the list!

Hi Gadget..
I went to a car boot sale last week and picked up a few books on the history of football. One of them has a whole page on Billy Meredith. A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL by Tim Hill. Photos courtesy Daily Mail. I imagine you already have it but let me know if not.
I have not ploughed through all of them yet so don't know who else is there but will keep a look out for all the names mentioned in this thread ;D

Gadget - there's also quite a bit about Meredith in BACK PAGE FOOTBALL - A CENTURY OF NEWSPAPER COVERAGE. .. winning player's prize, team photos, role in player's union..

Thanks Milly
I also have the book about him - my Dad had a signed copy as he had helped with info. and I inherited it :)
