According to general belief and wikipedia Donald Caskie was born Bowmore, Islay 1902
However scotlandspeople has no record of this birth, in fact according to scotlandspeople there were no Caskie, Caskey or Cask* births in Argyll between 1901-1903, now either popular belief is wrong or scotlandspeople is faulty.
Can anyone shed some light on this ?

Just to add to the previous post, i have download the 1901 census for Bowmore/Kilarrow for Neil Caskie and family, this is the only caskie family being returned during the search.
1901 census, Kilarrow, Jamieson St
H - Neil Caskie, 38 Farmer , b. Kilarrow
W - Maggie Caskie, 25, farmers wife , b. Kilarrow
D - Katie Caskie, 2, , b. Kilarrow
S - Thomas Caskie, 4 months , b. Kilarrow
However, another birth search on Scotlandspeople for Thomas Caskie gives no results, therefore is it possible Scotlandspeople are missing birth records for the Island ?

Hi Debi,
How about this lot all born in Bowmore or Kilarrow, Argyll, all to be found on ScotlandsPeople.
1899 MCCASKIE CATHERINE ANN
1900 MCCASKIUE THOMAS
1902 MCCASKIE DONALD
1904 MCCASKIE NEIL
1906 MCCASKIE ARCHIBALD
Got to be worth a try. I take it your 1802 above should be 1902.

A book has been written about Rev Caskie. It has been on sale at a coffee shop in Gourock which, I believe, is owned by his relatives.
Could probably get more info if this is of interest to you.

Donald Caskie was my great grandmother Wilhelmina's second cousin....
-
I was encouraged to read bis book as a young lassie. He helped my childrens grandfather in France after he escaped from a concentration camp where he was held in Germany. My father in law lived until the 1970s He had very bad health and suffered from TB while on the run. I have his military papers and can prove he was reported missing then found. The family were always grateful to the Reverend Donald Caskie and although there is doubt on this page about his birth. He definitely existed to help my childrens grandfather through France and no doubt many more people who were in France at that time.

Donald McCaskie b 22 May 1902 Jamieson Street, Bowmore. (Page 7 Number 20) Parents Neil & Margaret McCaskie nee Currie.
The caskies entered into my "Family" way back in 1860.
Caskie is spelled many different ways.
Cheers

I am searching for the Currie's of Islay. Donald Caskie's second name was Currie, as was my grandmother's name (Catherine Currie). My father, who was Canadian visited his mother's place of birth (Islay), and met Donald Currie Caskie at that time. Apparently after chatting, they discovered that they were cousins. Could anyone give me some information regarding the ancestry of the Curries.

Welcome to Rootschat.
I think if you add some more info. such as dates or possible/near dates it may help?
Meanwhile, a quick search for a birth of a Currie (middle name) Caskie (surname) on Islay doesn't show up.

Ev,
Thats's the DCC I was going to ask about after seeing an article in the Aberdeen Press and Journal, 4 Nov 1946.

I liked this description in the Times, 18 Apr 1981
"... the Rev Dr Donald Caskie, the Tartan Pimpernel of Paris ..."
(Obituary of the Rev Isaac Dunbar, a fellow Scot)
-
His obituary in The Times, 29 Dec 1983, names his father as "Niel Caskie" and there's a Niel Caskie, farmer, age 38 with wife and 2 children (Donald yet to arrive 1902?) at Jamieson Street, Killarrow, Bowmore, Argyllshire on the 1901 Census..

Thankyou for your reply. He was an amazing human being. His middle name was Currie, thus he was a cousin to my father. I am interested in finding the Currie side of the family. That was my grandmother's last name. I also have read the book, which he signed and presented to my father whilst my father was visiting Islay from Canada.

I have found Donald Caskie's birth on Scotland's People. He was born Donald McCaskie in 1902 in Bowmore or Kilarrow (Ref: 536/20). His mother's name is given as Currie. He christened me, but I was unaware that he had changed his name.
