:D the lairds still live in maryport, i was at school with one of the sons, the shop still stands with their name on, but it is empty, i dont know where in town they are living, :-\

William Laird was my grandmother's brother. She was Emily Laird. Thomas was my Great grandfather. I realise that this message was posted last year but if you still have the documents I would be VERY interested in them as I am having difficulty finding information about my grandparents family as most were born in Ireland. I have been lead to believe that Elllen (Eleanor) was born on the Isle of Skye- she was Eleanor Macleod.
The shop in Maryport is at present undergoing refurbishment.

If you still have the documents I would be extremely interested in them. I have some photos of the people mentioned.
Hopefully you will get back to me

you posted on rootschat.com a while ago about William Laird and his family from Maryport Cumberland. My Mother was born into the Laird family as Margaret Laird and lived in Harrington, Cumberland as a child.
Her grandfather was called Thomas Laird and his brother William, is the William to whom you refer. We know that Margaret, Robert, William and Ann Laird were born in the parish of Camlin(County Antrim), Ireland and moved to Harrington in 1871. Thomas (my mums grandfather) was then born in Harrington in 1874.
EllenJane McClurg and Thomas Laird(my mums grandfathers dad with the same name Thomas) were married in the non conformist Presbyterian church in the parish of Camlin(County Antrim) on November 12, 1958 and I have the documentation.
However, my mother who is now in her 80's would dearly love to have as much information about her family history as possible, especially pre uk history.
If you help us in our research in any way we would be very grateful indeed.
best wishes,
Clive.

Hi Clive- or should I say hello distant cousin :)
So my mum was cousin to your grandfather?
My mum was Annie Mark (b1918)- the daughter of Emily Laird (b1878) who was Thomas Laird's sister. Does your mam remember any of the family from Maryport?
I have very little information on the Laird family, except what I have been able to gather from the various census' online. I do have a photo of Emily with her husband and children which is attached. I have also just bought a copy of a photo of Laird's shop in Maryport which I will scan and forward if you are interested.Do you have any photos of Thomas and Ellen Jane Laird or any of their children? I would love to have a copy of the marriage documents if possible. I don't even know when they died.
I was surprised when you said her name was Ellen Jane McClurg, as we have always been led to believe she was Eleanor Jane MacLeod.
Are you still in this area? If there is any way you can send me your email address then I can forward more information.
Thanks for getting back to me.

Hello again Marilyn,
I can send you the Laird family tree if you like and a document with the details of Thomas and Ellen Jane McClurgs marriage in Camlin, Ireland. My mum also has some photos which may interest you.
We went to Maryport recently to take a photo of William Lairds greengrocers shop but it has been refurbished and the sign has gone. She would very much appreciate a copy of the one you have if that's possible, as my mum used to visit her relatives there regularly. Especially when her grandmother went to live with William and Sarah Laird following the death of her husband Thomas.
My personal e-mail address is (*)
If you could send me your e-mail contact address I will send you more information.
Do you any contact details of the other people who posted on roots chat such as angi0 or sanditon?
I couldn't work out how to send a personal reply on rootschat so I have had to post this message which I hope reaches you.
Do you still live in the area of Maryport, as my mum lives in Cleator Moor.
best wishes,
Clive

Hello Clive. I am Virginia Laird and William Laird was my Great (possibly Great) Grandfather. My father Richard Laird & sister Joan Laird were the children of Joseph Clark Laird born in 1900 who was married to Any Tiffin and lived in Maryport all their lives. Joe was the son of William Laird who was chairman of the council in 1904. I have a large picture of him. I would be very interested in receiving any information, photos you have as I am doing my family tree at the moment and my Aunt is now about 87 years of age and my father has passed away. I also have been told that we were part of the McLeod clan from Scotland. Really looking forward to hearing from you. Kind regards. Virginia

Hello. I think I am related to you and Clive as I am the great (great) grand daughter of William Laird. I would dearly love to see your photos and family tree if you have them. Look forward to hearing from you. Virginia

Hi Virginia, It certainly seems as if we are related. I am the great grand daughter of Eleanor Jane Laird, my grandmother was Emily Laird. - pictures added previously. I have never seen a photo of my great grandparents or know where they are buried, so would love any info.
Merry Christmas to all my new relations :) A a very happy new year.

I dont know if we can post a personal message to each other to show our email addresses then we can communicate separately? also did you and Clive exchange details, photos, information, trees?
This is very exciting!

Hello Virginia,
As you probably know by now, my mother was a Laird and her grandfather was called Thomas Laird. Thomas was born in Harrington, Cumberland and was the 5th of seven children. His brothers, Robert and William(Maryport side of the family) were born in county antrim in Ireland as were his sisters Margaret and Ann. When the Laird family moved from Ireland to cumberland(Harrington) in 1873 Thomas, John and Emily were added to the family.
I have a copy of the marriage details of Ellen Jane Mc Clurg and Thomas Laird(father to the Thomas Laird born in cumberland in 1874) and I notice from reading my previous posts that there is a typing error for the date of this marriage. It took place at the Crumlin Non Subscribing Presbyterian Church in the parish of camlin, county antrim on Nov 12th 1858 and not 1958 which I had previously posted on rootschat.
Marilyn and I swapped our personal e-mail details but I cannot remember how this was done as rootschat have a strict privacy policy, so maybe she can help you with this. I would be happy for you to contact me directly as I have now completed a comprehensive Laird family tree for my mum.
Do you live in Cumbria still?
happy Christmas
Clive
