Does anyone know where details of births and mothers can be found for Headington Workhouse. My interest is finding out the mother of Walter William Inwood born 29 September 1911 to an Alice. Walter died when 2 months old and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Oxford. Where did Alice live since this may give more identification?

Hi
I would assume your best bet is to contact the Archives Office in Oxford. They will probably have the workhouse records if they still exist. Assuming that Walter was illegitimate then the only Alice Inwood in Oxfordshire in 1901 is living in Marston which is very close to Headington. She is with her parents, Jesse and Alice.

Thanks sillgen. It seems I will need to go to Oxford Records Office. Your work has only found one Alice which was my suspicion. Presumably the workhouse was also a hospital at that time.
From what you say I wonder if he may have been a full or half brother to Reginald Charles Inwood who lived with Jesse in Ferry Road at one time.

I have been in contact with Oxfordshire Records Office and they do not have any records for the Headington Workhouse and tell me that they do not know where they might be. However, there is some information on the Internet about Headington Workhouse so someone must have some records somewhere? I am also looking for relatives that were in the workhouse in 1861 but I cannot find anything out except what it says on the census for that year.

Hi
Have a look at this site and contact the lady who runs it - she is very knowledgeable indeed.
