I hope that someone may be able to find marriages for -
Matilda Godfrey b 1868
Selina Godfrey b 1865
both were born Goolwa SA, parents were Charles Godfrey and Eliza Bourke
I have that Selina married Philip Richards but don't have a date
Also, Mary Godfrey b 1835 Yorkshire married John Aird in SA but need a date.
Thankyou
Geejay

Here's Selina's details....
Philip RICHARDS aged 28 and single married 14 Feb 1894 Selina GODFREY aged 25 and single at
Res of Thomas Nicholls Moonta
Fathers: Jacob RICHARDS & Charles GODFREY
Ref: Dal 178/600
There is no Matilda but there is an Emma Matilda with father Charles.....however the age doesn't tally.

Thanks Dee
Maybe Matilda didn't marry then, died young, or.........
-
Here's the details for Mary Godfrey....
John McNaught AIRD aged 39 status unknown married 30 March 1866 Mary Godfrey aged 29 and single at St Andrew Church Wakefield St Adelaide
Fathers: John AIRD & Richard GODFREY
Ref: Ade 66/185
Hope that helps, Geejay. I'll check and see if Matilda died......

Emma Matilda appears to have siblings called Beatrice and Bertha, all three weddings at their father's residence in Port Pirie.

No death for Matilda, and I rechecked marriages for God* without using a given name, and still no sign of her. :-\
......dee
-
The siblings of Emma Matilda's don't look like the right ones for my Godfreys
-
Thanks for checking that Dee.....
Would you be able to find any children for Benjamin Godfrey and Clara Ellen Southwell, they married in 1880.
Someone has given us information which is incomplete and I am trying to fill in some gaps.
GJ
-
Just the two for that couple......
Daniel Charles William GODFREY born 23 Sep 1880 at Rosewater
Ref: PtA 248/485
Matilda Maud GODFREY born 3 Dec 1882 at Rosewater
Ref: PtA 295/336
Would there be confusion over Clara Ellen's name......because there are a number of births to a Benjamin Godfrey and Clara Ellen Manning from 1885 onwards......
.....dee
-
Strange that you question Clara Ellen's name because on her marriage it is Southwell but her father's name is Henry Pitches, but I don't know the Manning name at all.
GJ
-
Dee, I have just noticed that they were married at the residence of a Daniel Manning in Rosewater.
Are the other births also at Rosewater?
It must be them
GJ
-
i just checked the marriages, and there is no marriage of a Benjamin Godfrey to a Clara Ellen Manning!
It just seems a remarkable coincidence of names......
There are 5 marriages of Godfrey girls between 1905 and 1914 with father Benjamin, and three are held at the residence of Benjamin Godfrey, Rosewater, and two are held at the residence of Rev. M.L. Murphy, Alberton.
Now that is another strange coincidence......I'll check the next disk.......and check on your query too......
......dee
-
No more marriages that I could see to 1937.....couldn't find marriages for either of the sons.....shall check the deaths.......
The births to Benjamin Godfrey and Clara Ellen Manning were all at Rosewater!!!! ???
.......dee
-
Don't know what sort of a puzzle we've started here, Geejay....but I checked to see if there were any births to a Daniel Manning......and guess what......he had 11 children between 1866 and 1891 and his wife was Martha Southwell.....
but no Clara Ellen among them......
......dee
-
It is never plain sailing is it :o
Clara might have been born to Martha when unmarried perhaps.......Henry Pitches, the father?
Looks like those births under Manning are the right ones.
GJ
-
Just saw your reply, would there be any birth for a Clara Ellen Pitches?
GJ
-
No....already checked that, Geejay.....but problem solved……
Clara Ellen SOUTHWELL born 31 Aug 1861 at Hindmarsh Valley
Ref: EnB 23/157
And guess who the mother was…….Martha SOUTHWELL and no father given…….
So obviously the Pitches bloke was Clara Ellen’s biological father and Daniel Manning her step father.
Oh oh…..looks like you’ll want the rest of the children……. ;D ;D ;D

Quick problem solving there Dee ;D
We aren't always so lucky
GJ

Wish it all worked out as easily as that, Geejay...... I have to go get the evening meal....I'll send the other births and anything else you want this evening. Hope you don't mind.......
......dee
-
That's fine with me, my dinner is on the stove too......
Really appreciate your time on this

Hi,
If you look on our NAA search site, you will find a naturalisation certificate for BERNHARDT JULIUS CURT SCHUMACHER who married Matilda Maud GODFREY. It is digitised for you.
It is dated 1909 and says he is a married man of
Rosewater with one child. A labourer who has ben in Aust. for 7 years. There are some other details including address.

GJ, there are some Schumacher, Garnaut, Skeller & Tanner births if you want them. Let me know and I'll send them in a PM.
......dee
-
Dee - Thankyou that would be great if you can
Sue - So much information on those documents, even the ship he emigrated on
Today I also found out that John McNaught Aird who married Mary Godfrey in 1866 had two other wives.
1. Eliza Bowdle married 19/3/1851 died 1860
2. Eliza Mills married 31/10/1861 died 18/10/1864
There are two children.......John Aird 7/4/1852 and John W Aird 19/6/1869
I am wondering if there were any other children as well.
Thanks
-
There's just the 1852 birth, Gordon, until John marries Mary Godfrey. As well as John W's birth there are 3 more. Shall I send them with the others tomorrow?
.....dee
-
Yes that would be OK
Thanks Dee ;D

Hi
You two don't know me from a bar of soap.
But I'll blow your minds anyway!
My surname is 'Mundy'.
My mother's maiden name is Garnaut!!!
Her father was John Walter Garnaut and his father was Harry Garnaut.
So if there's something you may want to ask me re the Godfrey's my mother is still alive - she is 77 and her sister is 65.
My grandfather - John Walter Garnaut married Dorothy Mack.
I've been researching the Garnaut side of my family and did a Google search and it came up with your Godfrey conversation.
Please reply?

Hi Deb, My line is actually the Elfenbein's of Goolwa. Caroline Minna Elfenbein is my Great Aunt. She married Thomas Godfrey 25/12/1881. Although not direct decendants I am still researching all ancestors related no matter how. If you have any info on them I would like to share it with you. The family lines related by marriage also include Harry Garnaut married to Clara Godfrey 4/10/1905.
