Title: Surname Watts
Post by: stuck62 on Monday 20 December 04 00:14 GMT (UK)
Looking for info on my Great grandfather, Arthur Watts was born at 13 Fernhead Rd, Paddington. London, England,  He came to Canada around 1912.  His parents were Mr. & Mrs. Edmond Augustus Watts, he also left behind a sister named Helen, nickname 'joe'.  I understand that she married a John Stopps.  During the 1940's they resided in Harrow Weald, Middlesex.  Would love to more about Arthur Watts and his family.  Should add, he was born in 1894.

Hi Stuck
Could this be your Arthur in 1901? I know it's his brother who is the Edmond , but after lots of different searches he is the only possible match I found.  The Walts looks like Watts to me on the original image.  ??? Jan

Well it certainly looks very interesting to me.  Too many of the dates makes sense, that it looks like it could have possibly been transcribed incorrectly.  I will pass this on to some family members for opinions.  Just today I visited Arthur Watts's daughter.  She is my Aunt, age 82, the only surviving child.  She never new her dad as he died young, but would love to know more about him.  I have very old letters from Mrs Watts, Arthur's mom, but I can't remember if she ever used a first name, I'll be checking.  Back then everyone was just Mrs Watts etc.  As for his sister I understood her to be Helen, but we may be wrong as no one here met her only did letter correspondense after WWII.  And an uncle from here (Canada)met her during the war.  The only thing I know of her was that she married a J. Stopps of Paddington.  I have found someone I believe from that family that is checking it out too.

I thank you so much for passing this info on and ask where I can go on-line to possibly view it as well.

Very thankful for your response.  Shelley

Hello again.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas, now that it is over I decided not to be so cheap and go to the site you gave me.   I compared other writings on the page and I really do believe it has been transcribed wrong.  Realizing that over the years information  or pronounciations can get confused, I printed it off so that I can get other opinions.  I have also e-mailed those looking after this information and told them of my thoughts and asked if it could be looked at again.  I may be a long shot but I have nothing to lose if I want to know more about family.

Once again thank you for all the information and help.

Have a Happy New Year.
Shelley

Hi again Shelley,
There is an awful lot of wrong transcriptions - I have an Amos Farr who became Annis Fan  (I know it is him from other info) - but the more I look at the images it is hardly surprising, some of the writing is terrible.  And if you don't actually know the family you're transcribing,  must be difficult.  Good luck with your conitinuing search and have a Happy New Year.  :) Jan

You are so right.  I showed my Mother the original e-mail from you, she wasn't convinced but now a few have viewed a copy of the census.  There is now now doubt in there mind that you lead me to the right place.  Again, Thanks so Much.

Shelley :)

Hi Carol

Thanks for the reply, I haven't found anything new lately.  I did find a copy on the 1901 census that I was directed too from someone else.  Although it was transcribed as something different this person felt there was an error made.  After reviewing it we all feel the same.  It compares to your info making all the individuals the same age.  The only difference is that I have my grandfather Arthur Edgar born in Feb 1894.  This came from the local obituary and from my grandmother.  And everyone here that is still alive had his sister as being Helen not Ellen.  But as no one ever knew her I feel they could be wrong.  I have letters from England from the 1940's but as my life was in storage for almost a year during a move I have yet to find then.  When I do maybe it will mention her name because these letters came from her mother in Harrow Weald.  I believe they were living together at the time.

All I know of Ellen/Helen is that she married a John Stopps.  I have not given up my search but I had recently located family from my Parish side both in Canada and England and I have been sharing info with them.  It is amazing how long it takes to add all the info to my own family tree maker.

I do feel that the info you found has to be linked as I realized there were inaccuracies in transcibing much of the census materials from the past.  I had also heard from someone who might be linked to the Stopps family of Paddington but I haven't heard back lately.  He was going to check for a link as he was a descendant of the Stopps family and I have know that Arthur's sister married Stopps.

I am going to have to take the time and go through my papers to find the old letters from Harrow Weald to see if I can get any names.  All I know right now is that they came after WWII.  Soon as I do I will let you know if I find anything.

Good to hear from you again, thanks for trying to help me and I will get back to you again.

Shelley

HI Shelley

Just very quickly as it's dinner time here!

The date on the births below refers to the quarter in which it was registered,so that births in Jan,Feb or March will be recorded in the March quarter. Or if it occured very late in the March, poss even in the June quarter.

Come back to me when you have more info.
I may even be able to get to Harrow library for you to check out electoral rolls of the 40's.If they did them during wartime?

ATB

Hello

As far as I know my Watts family comes from Middlesex or London.  Just learning more about them recently.  I know that my great grandfather Arthur Watts was born 1894 in Paddington, London, England.  His father was born in Marylebone.  I haven't been able to go back further as my g grandfather died very young here in Canada.  There was a sister Ellen Watts (b. 1898) who married C. D. Stops in 1922.  Sorry thats all I really know about them.
