Hello helpers
Having trouble finding my ggrandfather John Slater & his father Samuel on early censuses & IGI, also death of John Slater.
Known info:-
Marriage cert - John Slater m. Elizabeth Trohear 13/9/68 St Helier Jersey.
John Slater listed as age 29, gunner R.A, b.Hartfield Sussex.
Father Samuel Slater, blacksmith.
Birth cert of my grandmother Elizabeth Mary - St Helier Jersey 14/7/1869.
John Slater, occupation blacksmith.
Elizabeth his wife remarried in Ulverston Lancs in mid 1872, so he must have died in the intervening years. I have already asked for a Jersey death lookup and they did not find the death.
1871 England census has Elizabeth & daughter visiting Elizabeth's sister in Yorkshire where she is listed as 'farrier's wife', not widow, so it looks like John was still alive then. He is not on Jersey census for 1871.
I've tried to find John and his father Samuel on earlier censuses b. Hartfield Sussex without success.
Any help much appreciated.

From the Sussex Marriage Index
Withyham, East Sussex, 6 Sep 1835
Samuel SLATER
Sophia BALDWIN, botp
A possibility for the parents as Withyham parish is next to Hartfield parish.

In the 1841 census for Hartfield village I found only these families named Slater:
HO107/1115/6/6 page 4 - Hartfield Village
John Slater, 55, Watchmaker
Sarah Slater, 50
Thomas Slater, 13
Jane Slater, 20
All born in county
HO107/1115/6/7 page 5 - Hartfield Village
John Slater, 80, Tailor
Jane Slater, 65
both born in county
HO107/1115/6/10 page 12 - Church Street
Fortunatus Slater, 75, Parish Clerk
Ann Slater, 85
both born in county
Could one set be John's grandparents? He may have been born at their home.
Also, the village smith is named John Winnifrith, 45, if it's any help.

Hi Zal and Stovepipe
Many thanks for your replies.
Zal's Samuel Slater family might be the right one - if the 'son' born 1838 is John Slater.
I am still having trouble finding the family on censuses. Found the 1851 census with Samuel and Sophia and 6 children. It seems rather odd that none of the earlier children are on it, and Samuel is an agricultural labourer rather than a blacksmith...
I tried to find any of them on 1861 following but without success , and it's driving me crazy that I can't find the record you found on 1841, Zal! I'm using Ancestry to look things up. Where did you find it?
Stovepipe's Hartfield Slaters may be other relatives and I'll keep them in mind.
I have also found another Samuel Slater on 1861 census age 68, agricultural labourer living with daughter Ann 36 and son Samuel 17, CP Hartfield, all born Hartfield. This Samuel appears again on 1871 & 1881 censuses living with another son Isaac 44 and his wife Emily & niece Harriett. None of the children are the same as Zal's 1841/1851 Samuel's though.
Hope someone can help with clarification.

Liza

Have a look under Stalter in 1841. I found it by searching for William with keyword Isfield.
The family are Samuel Slatter 30 ag lab
Sophia 25
Rhoda 5 Hard to read and could be taken as Belinda by mistake
Samuel 3
William 1
plus Samuel 20 ag lab all born in county
Remember ages above 15 were rounded down in 1841.
No John, unless it was his second name.
This may be a red herring.

1851 HO107 1641 F85 p8 is worth a look. John Slater (Stater)age 12 with Fortunatus. It says son but the age difference might mean he is a grandchild I suppose? Both ag labs.
Have you tried to trace the Army records? They might have more clues.

Hi Zal and Sillgen
Thanks for the record refs, and I've looked at them all.
I liked the 'Weald of Kent Surrey & Sussex' site - lots of info & refs all on one page!
Did find though that the 'son born in 1838' of Samuel & Sophia is called Samuel. I suppose John could have been his middle name, but this is a bit of a stretch. And John's age seems a few years out for him to have been son/gson of Fortunatus.
I think I need another approach, and military records are an excellent idea. How would I go about looking for them please?
Thanks and regards,
Liza

I think they are all held at Kew but if you put a post on the Army board here then I am sure someone will point you in the right direction for Royal Artillery records.

Hi Andrea
Thanks, I'll try that.

Hi folks
Just had a thought. Is there anything available in Sussex records to trace blacksmith indentures? Perhaps I could learn more about John and Samuel that way.
