Title: Liverpool Industrial School (Everton)
Post by: Rosedale on Friday 21 September 07 21:20 BST (UK)
After watching "who do you think you are" last night I'm intrigued to find out some more as I thought these places were just to teach boys some "Industrial" skills-  I never checked up on this after finding a 1881 entry of an ancestor in there. Any more information available on this place? (all boys there, address was 19Everton Terrace)

Rosedale.

I found this Link:

Young Emigrants to Canada: http://ist.uwaterloo.ca/~marj/genealogy/children/Organizations/reformships.html

On which You can read not only the Numbers of 'Young Immigrants' but also exactly Where they Came from! (Everton Terrace Industrial School is mentioned) ;)

What a coincidence - I was looking for this school yesterday. The closest I could find is this:

http://www.missing-ancestors.com/ALPHABETICAL%20LIST%20OF%20ALL%20SCHOOLS.htm

Might come in useful for someone, but not us Rosedale!

All references I've found to the school are from others looking for information about it.

Yeah I was really disappointed after googling on what I found. What's your boy's name?

I'm wondering if any of you live in Everton? Is the building still there?

Thanks for all the links too, will have to check them out after work. Bye!

Hi Rosedale - I'm looking for James Bird age 15 on the 1881 census, inmate at the school.

St Georges Boys Roman Catholic Industrial School - at 137a West Derby Rd.
St Georges Certified Boys Roman Catholic Industrial School 29 Everton Terrace.
Lancashire    1871 1891 1861 - though no extra information available.

Thinking perhaps it's not 19 after all. Also looked for the Governor of the school of the time (William Barclay) but couldn't find much to do with Everton School.

Thanks for the link also Victoria. No Everton Terrace there though. It's like it never existed or something-  I was expecting to find lots of information.

I just wanted to find out why boys were sent to this particular school - The family wasn't so bad at the time and only he got sent off. Poor boy. Thanks for the link of young immigrants- 28!  :o

Hi Rosedale,
Google searches show everyone else is searching for the school at 19 Everton Tce too.
I'm just trying to eliminate someone from my enquiries, (not tracing a definite direct ancestor) but curious about this school too.

Oh right Ruskie,
It's a shame about the lack of information as there's so much on the other industrial schools.

I've found an "Everton Terrace Industrial School for Boys" at no.33, 29, 23 and 19, but it was down as "Roman Catholic", also found a " Liverpool Industrial Ragged School" at Everton Terrace. Hmm.. Probably the same ones but I wish that it would stick with a definite name, number and with some information!!

Just in case anybody is still interested in the future I'll keep posting stuff I find;

Liverpool Certified Industrial School's (1864), Everton Terrace, Liverpool, for 200 boys. Age preferred 6 to 13. Inmates (1887) -204

The cost for food for each inmate averaged 2s 71/4d per week, and for clothing 11 1/2d
- from 1875.

Snippets from books on Google.
Will keep active with more information.

P.S I have a James Bird on my tree (b.1909) - any relation?

Just as an aside ... I did find this !!

Industrial schools were run by the workhouse Unions ( though religious
groups sometimes ran them on behalf of the Unions) They were for
children who had either committed minor crimes, or were thought in
danger of doing so, because they were out of control, or their parents
couldn't cope .....
It wasn't considered cruel in those days ! :-\ :-\ ...

Yes Rosedale, it does make you wonder if these are the same school going by a different name at different times.

I suppose it's also possible that the street numbering changed over time, which it often does in large cities.

The James Bird I'm looking for was born 1866 - but as I said, he's not a necessarily the correct one. But I am stuck with Bird's in Liverpool - there seem to be quite a few of them - there maybe some connection further down the line.

I know this is old, but...Did you ever find more of your James Bird? Was he sent to Canada?  I just looked through the 1881 U.K. census for someone else on here, an Industrial School starts at Beacon Lane (later ST VINCENT'S, Beacon Lane. Sister Myddleton and Sisters of Charity/Rev. Canon Fisher.) 1881 census just calls this section  "Catholic Boys Indust Sch" http://www.missing-ancestors.com/liverpool_orphanage_industrial_info.htm
Then next is listed as St Georges Boys Indust School For R C Boys - Derby Road ( Thomas & Ellen BRINDLE )
http://www.missing-ancestors.com/st_georges%20ind%20sch%20west%20dery%20rd%20l%27pool%20info%20page.htm
Then "Liverpool Industrial School" ( headed by William & Emily BARCLAY) 19 Everton Terrace ...so the three sections seem to span the length of 3 addresses... ( Don't forget to look through the subsets when using this version on the 1881 transcription) After these long lists of children is the Institution "W Derby Union Workhouse For Sick Poor" Mill Rd
I would bet they split the institution into 3 or more individually named sections in order to be certified for 200 or more children per unit...Note that the 4th institution also had many children of all ages as well...
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881BR_3772644

Noted that the complete listing has St Georges Boys Roman Catholic Industrial School - at 137a West Derby Rd. and St Georges Certified Boys Roman Catholic Industrial School at 29 Everton Terrace, previously Everton Lace Ind. Sch.

Hello Rosedale, are you still looking for information about Liverpool Industrial School at Everton Terrace? My husband's great grandparents were superintendent and matron there  from 1900 to 1911 and before that his great-great uncle and aunt - William and Emily Barclay. I am attaching a photo of it which we have, although I'm afraid I don't know the date it was taken.

Think William Barclay was involved also in the split which involved Everton FC leaving Anfield to go to Goodison.

Hiya,

Ive recently started working in Anfield cemetery and came across the grave of 5 boys. The dates were from about 1910 onwards and the boys were in their early teens. The headstone mentioned The Liverpool Industrial School Everton.

My family have lived in the area for generations and nobody that I've asked has ever heard of the school, so I thought I'd google it and I've ended up here.

I'll go back to the grave and post the details next week.

Hi kikyalagin and welcome to Rootschat,
I have only found this this topic in the last five minutes. I was looking for info on St George's Boys' Catholic Industrial School and was delighted to see the photograph.

There will always be people looking for graves apart from those who are interested in the industrial schools because they have found family there on a census. I'm sure there will be lots of us who will be interested in any details of graves you come across. I'm surprised that boys who died in an industrial school have a headstone on their grave.
Looking forward to your next post,
Joney

Hi Joney

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your post, did you think the photo posted by Poplar was of St George's? That photo is of the Liverpool Industrial School that was located between Everton Terrace and Netherfield Road South.

Thanks, Blue. When so many different institutions are mentioned in one set of replies it's easy to get lost !  As it happens I'm still pleased to see a photograph of any of the industrial schools as I think it gives us an idea of the type of buildings that would be used.  I have seen a picture /photo (?) of Kirkdale Industrial School which to me looks purpose-built,  a single huge block with  empty land around it. The schools in Everton are based in already existing large terraced houses judging by the addresses,  so I am still pleased to see a photo which gives an impression of the size of them.

Addresses can be misleading they don't tell us if the institution is in a row of terraces such as the establishments in Shaw Street or detached. Maps are more useful in determining the layout of these schools. Looking at old maps and the photo posted by Poplar you can see that Liverpool Industrial School was purpose built. Here is a c1891 map (zoom out until it appears):-

FindMyPast have the Liverpool Workhouse registers online.

It was normal for a person to be admitted to the Workhouse proper, then children of the relevant age from their family to be syphoned off to the Industrial School at Kirkdale, so your relative will probably appear more than once.

That's interesting. I suspect that an ancestor of mine was in an Industrial School in that area - but I've no idea where his parents were - he was born in Ireland, and I can't find him before then.
