Title: Parishes...
Post by: tobymarsh on Thursday 20 September 07 14:10 BST (UK)
How do you know what "old" parish a village was in?

Im after the info on Graveney, which I think is near Faversham; but cant find anything to tell me which Parish to look under.

Hi Toby

Graveney is a parish in it's own right ie. it has it's own parish church.  The original church registers are at Canterbury Cathedral Archives but some of the more recent ones are probably still at the church.

Does that help?

Unlikely to be on line, but they are available on microfiche from Kent FHS (www.kfhs.org.uk (http://www.kfhs.org.uk)) as is the 1841 census.  The parish registers are also available on CD from the same source.

You'll also find a set of the surviving Graveney parish registers on microfilm at Faversham Library. However, if you plan on visiting them, phone ahead and book your reader, since they only have two machines!

hi

Graveney is, ecclesiastically in the diocese of Canterbury, in the archdeaconry of C'bury and in the deanery of Ospringe. The Church is named All Saints with original parish registers commencing 1653.
Graveney, a parish in Faversham district, Kent:
Population in 1861: 234. Houses: 45.

http://www.kent-opc.org has lots of info on Graveny!

Although bet ya, I had you fooled that I was a clever bod, when you read the first bit.
Regards
Claire

Graveney parish has been a bugbear with me for a long time.  First of all, they never turned over their records to the LDS for microfilming.  I've been told that this was for theological reasons.  Secondly, according to the warden, a number of years ago the whole parish chest was stolen.  (I saw that thing.  It was huge -- and heavy!)   The thieves burned all the paper in it  :o then tried to pawn the plate.

I didn't know that Faversham Library had a copy of the PRs.  If so they are precious.  I wish I had known that when I was in the UK this summer.

To Toby, I'd like to know who you are researching if you wouldn't mind telling me, please, as Graveney is where my brick wall is.

Please ignore the names of interest in my signature.  I must change that.  I'm researching my husband's tree now, and those are my names.

Cheers.

You will find that a lot of Kent parishes refused to allow the LDS access to their registers, as the clergy, quite understandably, did not approve of their reasons for wanting them (NOT for the benefit of us family historians!).

The copy in the local library will be a transcription - possibly the one from which the KFHS fiche was produced or may be a set of the fiche.

Canuk, as I mentioned above, the registers are at Canterbury Cathedral Archives.  They have all those for East Kent except Ash by Sandwich

Parishes in Canterbury Archdeaconry
The Cathedral Archives holds records for all parishes currently in the Archdeaconry of Canterbury, except for those for Ash next Sandwich, which are retained in the church.

http://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/history/catalogues.htm

According to a list I have (1991) the Graveney registers at Canterbury Cathedral Archives include baptisms 1653-1913, marriages 1654-1837, burials 1653-1812, banns 1754-1813 and 1824-1915.  BTs 1564-1911.  The centre for Kentish Studies and the Society of Genealogists have copies of burials 1813-1837.

Kent OPC has a full index of Parishes with maps linked to each.  You can find the parish you are interested in, click on the map link and see where it is located in Kent and what is near by.

Hope that helps for future research.
