Hi thanks for that. Yes its Gads Hill in Gillingham that Im looking for. There seem to be loads of Wells in Gillingham and Chatham but cant sort out which are mine! Have been on City Ark and got quite a lot of info but how many William and Marys are there.
My other Kent surname interests connected to Wells are Gransb(ur)y, Mason, Watson, Oxford and Denn. Any takers?

I may have a link in that my GG Grandfather Arthur Henry Wells b 1883 was brought up by by his stepfather Richard Wells b 1860? who married Arthur's Mother Dorcas Mason in 1890 . Richard is from a family who ran "The Victory "public House in Gads Hill Gillingham during the 1800's. Richards father and mother were Richard W ( William?) and Harriet who was seemingly the landlady as Richard Senior is listed as a mariner in 1871 census.
Any interest to you?
Regards
Tracy Wise (Nee Wells)

Hi
Sorry to hijack the thread but I've lived in the Medway Towns all my life and have many ancestors in Gads Hill (no Wells though I'm afraid) but have never heard of it referred to as Pug Hill.
Buddysmum - any idea of the origin of this, its really interesting ;D

Hi Buddysmum
Thanks for your reply. I have a great aunt who came from the Gads Hill area, so I'll see whether she knows anything.
Your Nan sounds a very interesting character - a lady chimney sweep. I would imagine our two families have probably crossed paths in the past as both sides lived for many years in that area.
I have a few local history books - i'll have a look through and see if I can find anything more.
