Title: Hannah GOODCHILD
Post by: king william on Sunday 16 September 07 06:15 BST (UK)
My ancestor Hannah Goodchild was born in 1801 or 1805 in Baddingham, Suffolk, she married Benjamin Baxter in either North Cove or Beccles, she was the postmistress (I believe) in Beccles in 1823 and died there in 1885.
I have never been able to find her parents, I did see a mention that perhaps she was a daughter of a Thomas Goodchild and Sarah Pollard, then again I have seen mention of John Goodchild and Elizabeth Mumford of Milden, Suffolk who married in 1789.
Any ideas anyone, I have the Baxter family but not the Goodchilds.

Hi Robin

I had a look at Baddingham PR, and found some baptisms of children of Thomas Goodchild and Sarah Pollard but could not see Hannah (not to say she wasn't there, but I did have a good look and could not spot her).

Children of Thomas and Sarah, who I did see, were
George 30.7.1791
Ruth 4.11.792
Susan 9.2.1794
George 8.11.1795
Thomas 12.5.1805
Thomas 23.5.1808

I double checked between 1795 and 1805, but nothing jumped out at me, although they probably would have had more children between those dates?

Sorry I could not be more help ...

Regards
Anne

Annes,
Many thanks for your research for me, it is interesting that there is a daughter called Ruth as Hannah and Benjamin had a daughter named Ruth, she was my great great grandmother - and my grandmother was named Emilie Ruth Sewell. As you say, there may have been other children in between the 1795 and 1808 children, not like them to not be having one every year and only 3 in those 13 years seems a bit lax on their part.
Anyway thanks and I am interested in the fact they had a child named Ruth

I am a direct descendant of this Ruth.  She married William Threadkell, had one daughter Mary and died c1838 in Saxmundham.  If you can link in to this please let me know.

Hi Mathsboffin,
NIce to hear from you - my line is as follows going back from my grandmother Emilie Sewell on her maternal line,
1...Emilie Ruth Sewell 1889 - 1984, born Norwich, died Tauranga, NZ
2...Walter Sewell and Emily Martin
3...William Martin and Ruth Baxter, married in 1864, Wangford, and had 4 daughters - Emily Happy, Lucy and Helen
4...Benjamin Baxter and Hannah Goodchild
Does any of this tally up with yours, thanks for replying to me
Robin

Dear King William

No it doesn't -  my Ruth Goodchild is the daughter of Thomas Goodchild and Sarah Pollard.   All of the Goodchilds are connected somewhere I believe, but it doesn't appear that we have a connection (yet!).

Hi Mathsboffin,
Maybe your Ruth Goodchild is a sister to my Hannah Goodchild, she was born about 1805 and married Benjamin Baxter in 1824 in North Cove, they then moved to Beccles..
My Ruth was Ruth Baxter, the daughter of Hannah and Benjamin Baxter, and probably niece to your Ruth Goodchild

I am looking for a Susan, or Susannah Goodchild.  She was the daughter of William.  She was born around 1815c
I wonder if there might be a connection, somewhere, here, maybe William was the brother of Thomas?
On the 1861 census, Susan is married to David Woolard, as a widow, her married name was then, Cook. It says that she was from Dennington, Suffolk, but cant find this anywhere else.  I believe that she was, originally partner to John Cook. She had a son Samuel  who I found the birth record of and it gives as son of Susannah Goodchild and John Cook, so presume they never married, as can't find a marriage for them.

Hello,
Although this might be an old post, by now, I have been researching the Goodchild families, for myself and came across a tree, on Ancestry, that gives an Hannah as being born in 1801, she was the daughter of Thomas Goodchild and Sarah,  and married to Benjamin Joghn Baxter. The tree is called Syson Footitt Tree.
My connection lies, I think, although still not 100% sure, with Hannah's brother, William born 1785.
Hope this helps.

Hello
Since I posted this on Rootschat which was quite time ago now I have found out more of the family.
Susan or Sussanah was the daughter of Ruth Goodchild. William was her uncle and I think he must have given her away as she named him as her father on her marriage record.
Ruth had Susan before she married a man named William Threadkell.
I believe Ruth also had a other daughter.
Susan was my great great grand.mother.
Thank you for your reply.
