Title: Re: 1841 Sussex Census Box
Post by: Bingbingbang on Thursday 14 October 04 20:07 BST (UK)
Hi again Chris

You very kindly helped me a while ago with some information on the Box entries in 1851 in Cuckfield. Am I right in thinking you might now have access to details for 1841? If you do then any information on Box families living in Cuckfield in 1841 would be excellent. I know its cheeky but any information on Box families in Ardingly in 1841 would also be of great interest to me as there are a few holes in my tree around this time.

Many many thanks  :)

Neale

Hi Tangent

1841 census for Ardingly & district - 58 pages

BOX William, 55, Carpenter
        Mary, 52
        Heallich ?, 20 (female)
        John, 15
All born in county of Sussex

BOX William, 35, Carpenter
        Ann, 35
        Jane, 12
        George, 10
        John, 7
        Anne, 6
        Elizabeth, 3
        James, 2
All born in county of Sussex

BOX Peter, 65 ?
       Sarah, 66
       Richard, 19, Labourer
       William, 10
All born in county of Sussex

Although the surname BOX was easy to see and read, the enumerator was a terrible writer, all loops and squigges - hope you can identify them from the bit I was able to transcribe

BOX Mary, 13, Female servant in Ardingly

Thanks again Chris

For some reason the members of my immediate family don't want appear in the census (James Box aged 17/18) - though being a labourer it may be that he had to seek work elsewhere in Sussex - I know he was married to Jane and living in Cuckfield in 1851 and that he was born in Ardingly in 1824 but its the elusive years in between!

As always your help was much appreciated.  :)  :)
