Title: Would iron planer make boilers??
Post by: Treelover on Thursday 13 September 07 23:08 BST (UK)
Hi,

On a marriage certificate in 1920 the father's profession is boilermaker.  I think I've found him on the 1901.  His profession is shown as apprentice iron planer. I can't seem to find a description of an iron planer. Is it possible he could have gone on to make boilers?

What was an iron planer please  ???

Thanks, Joan

Boiler maker = a person who makes boilers or a general metalworker

Boiler Plater = a person who made rolled iron plate used to make boilers for steam engines

I suspect your apprentice iron planer (or could the image read iron plater??) was learning to make rolled iron plate.

basically it was one type of foundry job. I cant see why a chap couldn't work his way up through the various disciplines of foundry work over time

A Planing machine is used to machine iron & steel objects to form a flat surface, the cutting tool is held in an horizontal frame and the work piece travels backwards & forwards beneath this, , the operator is referred to as a Planer, similar to a lathe operator being known as a Turner

I've just been looking the same up. I have ancestors who have the job titles as Iron rail planer and also Points and crossings planer railway.

I would think an apprentice planer would be a machinist, although if he was an apprentice boilermaker he may have learnt to use a planer but why not say he is an apprentice boilermaker rather than an apprentice planer.

I see others have got here before me with the same answer.  There were plenty of jobs that a planing machine would have to do.

The planer was also used when an iron casting needed to be "tidied up" = all the burrs planed off it.

Had to take them off with a hammer and chisel when I was an apprentice.

lol - you can't trust some youngsters with machinery.  :D

What tool was used to burnish the casting?
