Thanks from an former Rochdalian for this sad picture. What heart-breaking photos on this site, as you say, and what an evocative term "Waifs and Strays" is!

Thanks very much for this link, instead of wondering what life was like when you see census with children in homes, you now know so much more - hoping to find a few of my lost children

Very interested to see this. My father was placed in an orphanage run by Irish monks at Buckley Hall, Rochdale c.1931. Does anyone have any other pics by any chance? This is one taken during a visit to the orphanage by Jock McEvoy, the champion British Boxer - my father is one of the boys standing behind him but it's very blurred. 'Auntie Gracie' Fields also used to visit the boys. I don't know whether it's true - you know what family 'memories' are like but my father said they only had eggs twice a year - Easter & Christmas!
-
Sorry, I don't think my previous message linked with the pic.

Hi Dibley
If you look on the Manchester & Lancs FHS page http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/Bookshop/local.htm there's a history of Buckley Hall for sale:
Buckley Hall Orphanage, Rochdale 1888-1947 - £3.50, 110gm
Pat Gallacher. The history of the above orphanage. Contains: The Bucklegh Family and Buckley Hall, Brothers of Charity, Orphanage and School, Benefactors, Resident Chaplains 1889-1947, Members of the Old Boys Ass. 1973-1976, Personnel and much more regarding the health, recreation, sports & pastimes of the pupils. A5, 55pp.
I remember my father talking about McEvoy "The Rochdale Bomber", and I can well imagine "Our Gracie" paying a visit to the boys.
As I'm sure you know, Buckley Hall is a prison now. I was rather amused to read this note on their website:
Due to the residential units being on a 1:15 incline; we are unable to accept prisoners with mobility or heart problems.
Health & Safety again, I suppose. ::)

Orphanages, doe's any readers know of a group of 4 or 5 houses known as the Lees./ Leigh Homes, Scholes nr. Holmfirth, Yorks., children from there attended Hepworth school during the 1940/50 period, I drove past them a few years ago and they appeared to be closed, several of the children were school mates.

Sorry can't help you there Bodger, but I must say that since reading about the Hidden Lives website at lunchtime today, I have been onto the site and sent an e-mail to the address given by them to ask if they knew anything about Newlands Home in Hull. I have already had a reply from the Records Manager, less than 2 hours after my enquiry, telling me that Newlands wasn't one of their homes, but giving me the names, addresses and web pages of three other Societies that might be able to help.
Now that's what I call good service! :) :)

Hi Liz !
Don't know what years you're looking for ... but I found these ... any good ??
4. Orphanages and children’s homes
The Sailors’ Children’s Society (later the Sailors’ Families’ Society) opened an
orphanage at Park Street, Hull, in 1869, which moved to Cottingham Road
(Newland Homes) in 1893-97. Hull City Archives holds admission registers
and other records, including baptism registers of the Fishermen’s Bethel.
Access to some records less than 100 years old is limited by the Data
Protection Act.
The Hull Mariners’ Church Orphan Society (established 1853), later the Hull
Seamen’s and General Orphan Society, ran an orphanage at Spring Bank
from 1866. In 1921 it was moved to Hesslewood and closed in 1985. Hull City
Archives holds admission records and other records 1866-1983. Access to
records less than 30 years old is restricted.
Records of the St Anthony’s Orphanage, Victor Street, Grimsby, which was in
existence from 1900 to 1957 (previously from 1891 known as the Fisherlads’
Home) are held by the Sisters of St Joseph of Peace, Sacred Heart Convent,
Nottingham, NG3 5AZ. Few records survive before 1939.
The surviving records of the Scartho Road Institution, 1894-1948, and of the
Brighowgate Children’s Home, Grimsby, from 1913 to 1957, are held at the
North East Lincolnshire Archives in Grimsby. Access to records less than 75
years old is restricted.

Wow, Liverpool Annie that's brilliant. I was interested in photographs of the home. I did get the Admissions/Discharge details of my g.uncle from the Hull Archives. They very kindly dispensed with the fee they usually charge as they could not give me very much info, but it all helped.
I love that programme The Way We Were, so will be watching very carefully when the episode in question is broadcast.
I'm surprised that Newlands was run by the Sailors Children's Society and not the Hull Mariners as my g.grandfather was a fisherman. Still I don't suppose it made much difference if there was a vacancy at the appropriate time.
Thanks again.

Such a shame Dibley that I have only just found this site as my father and his brothers were `placed` in Buckley Hall.I have one photo of my uncle Harold Brierley with a group of boys there.A man by the name of John Flanagan from Manchester invited me and my family to his home and gave us an insight into what life was like in Buckley Hall.I do not know if John is still living as he was well into his eighties and in poor health but he had lots of photos and I know was a main provider of information in the books written about the hall by Pat..If you ever get back on here I hope you will contact me...

Hi Heypeg,
Would love to see a pic of Harold & co. My dad died nearly two years ago but remembered various stuff about Buckley Hall. I'll have to send for the history - thanks for the info.

Hi Dibley...here is the picture of the boys from Buckley Hall..my uncle Harold Brierley(was born Mitchell in 1922 in Chorlton but he wouldnt have known that probably until it came to him getting his pension) is the lad in the middle with the `sloppy` eyes and arms folded..looks a bit like Robert Mitcham...he and his brother Leo Brierley (Mitchell)born 1919 were placed there in 1931...later on in about 1941 my dad James Brierley born 1925 Salford and Herbert Brierley born 1928 Salford were placed there after being in Our Ladys in Didsbury..sad that the boys were split up and never met again...my dad died in 1999 and Leo in 1996..I have never found Harold or Herbert...

Hi i am in the process of transcribing the 1891/1901 & 1911 Census for Buckley hall Rochdale, if any one would like and names looking up please ask me and would be more than happy to do this. I have the same for Holly mount Catholic children's home in Tottington Bury. Boys stayed at Holly mount until they were 11 years old and then they were sent to Buckley Hall Rochdale. This split many family's up at the time. I see people have posted a few pictures on this thread for Buckley hall, Can i ask for permision to copy them and are they not copy written?
I'm also transcribing the 1901 & 1911 for ST. Joseph's Worsley road Patricroft Salford & 1901 & 1911 for George street orphanage Salford. I would l love any pictures people would like to share with me that are not copy written.
Migky ;)
Update to this post. My hard drive which i had all of the above infomation on blew it's brains out a little while ago. All my transcribes for the above and many other records has been lost, so at this moment in time i am unable to do any look ups for any one. I did not have the files backed up at the time and the cost to recover all the file ( that is if they can be ) would be to much for me. I do intend on starting to collect them all again but a lot of records were not freely available as were so many of the photos.

Hi my name is Keith Schofield and a former inmate at the Leighs back in 1962 - 1968. I was in the house called Maple. I was part of the family of 3 that were kidnapped by our own father 2 weeks before the annual trip to Cleethorpes. I can remember quite a few people who were there at the time. It is quite hard to find anything about the leighs.
Regards Keith

I was there during the early 60s between 63 and 68. I was part of the family that got kidnapped by our own Father a week before the holidays to Cleethorpes I was in one of the houses called Maple. Mr Broome was in charge as far as I can remember. Plus remember the Round Table taking us on trips etc. I still remember plenty of names of former residents but none of the staff. I have done a load of searches over the years and always come up empty handed. We must have been a secret.

my dad was at both Holly Mount in Tottington and Buckley Hall in Rochdale then sent to an orphanage in Essex also run by the Christian Brothers, when Buckley Hall was closed down.
He entered the system when he was only 10 months old!!!! His memories are horrific, he's now 77yo and still has nightmares!!!!
He would dearly love to be able to get some information about all three places......

Hi Michael Walsh..I didnt know John Flanagan had died...he was a lovely man and invited us into his home where he gave us so much information on Buckley Hall...I phoned him a few times but suffered a heart attack myself and when I phoned again John was ill himself..then my mum had open heart surgery and I never managed to ring John...that is so sad.....
John knew my uncles who went to Buckley Hall in 1931..one was called Leo and the other Harold Brierley...Leo died in 1996 and went to the reunions.I have never found Harold but he is on the same picture with John Flanagan that I put on here. Also Leo and Harold are on the other picture with the band..
Later on my father James and younger brother Herbert Brierley were moved to Buckley Hall.By this time Leo and Harold had left there...
It would be lovely to hear about your dads time there...I hope you can get back to me...Peg...
