Hello gurus of Middx. :)
I have just started studying one of my third great grandfathers. His name was Ebenezer Fernie. He was born around 1786 but that is from an 1841 census HO107/Piece 722/Folio 6/Page 11 so think +/- 3 years.
Researching him on Times Online he was the managing director of the British Commercial Insurance Company which may have been the first commercial insurance company.
He married a Mary and had at least two children, Maryanne b1819 and Jenette b1826.
There are entries for other Ebenezer Fernies on IGI but these look like maybe his father/grandfather/.... There is one marriage in 1786 to a Mary Wakeman so this may be his parents.
As all the IGI data is submitted rather than transcribed I would like to find his birth and any further details further back. The possible parents on IGI were married in St George, Hanover Sq so that may be a good place to start.
Has anyone got access to PRs that may contain Fernies?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul,
I cannot give much help, only to confirm that the marriage of Ebenezer and Mary does appear on the transcription of the Harleian Society as 7 May 1786.

Hi Paul,
I have just found a couple of entries, Marianne Witherington Fernie 1813 and Ebenezer Waugh Fernie 1815 with parents of Ebenezer and Mary Waugh. Dr Williams Library.
You may already have them, if not and you would like them let me know, will happily post them for you
Frances :)

Thanks Frances.
So it looks like:
Ebz F b1761 m7/5/1786 Mary Wakeman (IGI, Harl Soc.)
Ebz F b1786 m Mary Waugh (1841 census, Dr W Lib.)
children:
Marianne Witherington F b1813 (1841 census, Dr W Lib.),
Ebz Waugh F b1815 (Dr W Lib.),
Jenette F b1826 (1841 census)
I am not very experienced yet going back past 1841. So far I have been lucky in the areas I was looking because they had excellent parish record transcriptions online.
Middlesex seems a whole new ballgame. Not only is it massively populated but everyone moved around freely.
The two references you quote are completely new to me. Could you tell me a little about them?
How confident do you think I should be about this line? How can I get more confident?

I have tried to find more information for you, no luck so far :( Putting the name Fernie into Ancestry brings up many entries, nearly all from Scotland.
I am sorry I cannot find more for you, I hope that someone else can help. Some of my Middlesex ancestors are very elusive as well!
Good Luck,
Frances :)

That's brilliant Frances! :)
Thanks very much for the references.
Maryanne (my second gt gmother) appears in 1861 census born in Holborn which is just 2 miles from Islington. She is, however consistently born 1819 so I expect she fashionably removed five years from her age. :)
I just love the middle name. :) I wonder where her brother Ebenezer went?
Thanks again for the help.

This is also from the Times, could this be his death?
The Times, Wednesday, May 29, 1861; pg. 1; Issue 23945; col A
On 25th inst, at 15, Inverleith Place, Edinburgh, the residence of his daughter, Mrs Charles Tennant Dunlop, Ebenr. Fernie, formerly of Tottenham and Kew, Surrey, Esq, J.P. and Deputy-Lieutenant for the county of Middlesex, in his 79th year.
(There is an early entry for wife Mary)
The Times, Thursday, Feb 27, 1868; pg. 1; Issue 26058; col A
On the 25th inst, at Trinity-church, Sloane-street, Chelsea, by the Rev. Richard Burgess, Kirwan Joseph Fernie, Esq, of Haftor House, Orkedal, Norway, son of the late E. Furnie, one of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace, and Deputy-Lieutenant of the county of Middlesex, Esq, to Ann Caney Stanton, youngest daughter of the late Stephen James Bridges Stanton, Esq, of Chase Lodge, Hendon, Middlesex.
The Times, Wednesday, Apr 30, 1884; pg. 1; Issue 31121; col A
On the 25th April, of apoplexy, at 6, Via Garibaidi, Florence, Marian Witherington Bell, wife of Vernon Bell, MD, and daughter of the late E. Fernie, one of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace, and Deputy-Lieutenant of the county of Middlesex, Esq.
freebmd.rootsweb.com shows Charles Tennant Dunlop as marrying Janett[ae] Mary Fernie in 1845.
Now, looking at Kirwin (first name often misspelled), he died in Hendon in 1906, aged 86. There's also a 1841 census hit for 'Kerwen' Fernie, 22, b. in Middlesex, living with a Josh Fernie, 55, accountant, born in Middlesex. They're in St. Andrew Undershaft parish, Leadenhall St.
This is probably Joseph Fernie, who died 1844 (his will is on www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline - might mention relatives? He could be a brother to Ebenezer.)
www.a2a.org.uk has a few hits:
Berkshire Record Office: Reading St Giles Parish Records
marriage license, 1812, Ebenezer Fernie of London, gentleman, and Mary Waugh of Reading St. Giles.
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/SCT-GLASGOW/2006-02/1139858438
- here's someone whose relative married Ebenezer Waugh Fernie.
Very strong links to Scotland in this family!
http://website.lineone.net/~jcn/LND/illust1.htm - !!! This might explain it if you can't find the family in 1851!
http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/html_units/1820s/t18200918-75.html - and another mention of Joseph Fernie of Leadenhall St.

There's an interesting hit on Ancestry in U.K. and U.S. Directories, 1680-1830 that reads:
Subscribed to A Topographical Dictionary of England, comprising the several counties, cities, boroughs, ... <lots more details about the dictionary>
What does this mean? I suspect Subscribed doesn't mean the same here as it does nowadays. Was he funding it perhaps?

Oh NO!
The death details of Marian Witherington Bell breaks her out of my tree! And she was my connection. :( :( :(
My connection came from a marriage (I dont have the certificate) 1846 Q4 N Aylesford 5 622 showing Mary Fernie marrying my 2nd gt grandfather Robert Speight b1821 Gravesend.
Thank you all so much for your help. I have some more research to do, some pruning, and a marriage cert to order. :(
And there's no point in hoping Vernon Bell was her second husband. She was still with her four children in 1871 aged 49. Robert died in 1855 just months before his son George was born leaving her with four children to bring up.
Oh well. :) What can one do with a load of really interesting information about a really interesting man who no longer belongs in my tree?

There is a thin sliver of hope.
Marriage
Q3 1856 FERNIE Marianne Witherington-St George Hanover Sq-1a-436
If this is her then
a) She is in her forties. :(
b) She used her maiden name. >:(
c) He wasn't with her in 1861 or 71. :(
d) They married the year after Robert died :)
I've ordered the North Aylesford marriage. We'll see.

FYI
Here's Mary in:
1861 RG9/54/25/53
William and George are missing and I have never found them. Could they be with Thomas Vernon Bell? I cant find him.
1871 RG10/123/59/13
All four boys are there. Mary is deaf.

OK! Its a bust! :(
The certificate arrived. Correct Robert Speight but he married Mary Fernie b1819 (I think St Andrew Holborn). Her father is William Fernie.
Cant find them in 1841. :(
Thanks all for your help.

I wonder if you can assist me?
I am researching James Shepherd Smith Stanton (born 1832 in Hackney - death April 1913 in Willesden, Middlesex). I believe he was a sibling of Ann Caney Fernie nee Stanton
Did their father Stephen James Bridges Stanton live at Chase Lodge, formerly Page Street House, Hendon (is this now Chase Lodge Hospital ? any info ?). He was a Mariner and Ship Owner. Did he marry Susannah (Susan) Ridley? and was she their mother ?
James Shepherd Smith Stanton married Sophia Matilda Cox and Mary Cope Campion. He was a Portrait Painter and Photographer.
Any assistance very welcomed
