Title: All Saints, Bracebridge, headstones
Post by: Eilleen on Sunday 09 September 07 17:21 BST (UK)
Hi all, I have started a new topic because it is bracebridge villiage , which is different to Bracebridge on the heath.
I have just spent a lovely afternoon in the grave yard takeing photo's of headstone's. I have not got time to list them all at the moment but here are a few, if you want a picture just say.
William Vernam, died 1892.
 Sarah Vernam,  died  1900.
Alice  Vernam, died  1893, aged 19yrs.
Emma  Robinson ne Vernam  , died 1911. there is more imfo on this name and more people .
I think all of the above belong to Smudge  ???
Harry and Mary Jane Bogg, harry was born 1863.
Frank and Lilly Herringshaw,  Frank was born 1877.
John and Mary Ann Jones, John was born 1813.
John Henry Leachman, born 1857.
Lizzie Hill, 17yrs old, daughter of William and Elizabeth, died 1899.
that's all for now , will look at the other picture's later.

I never think of Bracebridge as being a village.  It's just "the church at the end of Brant Road".

Any sign of Samuel THOMPSON (c1737-1820) or wife Elizabeth (c1750-1824)?

Hi Geoff,  from the leaflet someone gave me at the church yesterday, it says in 1811,  there were 24 houses and a population of 153 adults,  this grew steadily until building work started on Newark road and the population got bigger in the late 1800's .
Will look for your's when I next go, I missed the older headstone's because my camera ran out of life,   got to get off to work,
 Eilleen.

Hi Eilleen,
I wonder if you found any Mettam's in the graveyard, I would be very interested in any information if you did.
Thank you very much,
Kate.

Kate

The National Burial Index has over 1,000 burials at Bracebridge 1814-1900.  There is no METTAM in that time.

Thanks Geoff,
Thanks for that, it looks like Ann died at Bracebridge 19 Oct 1915 and I don't have a date of death for her husband Alfred.
Thanks anyway,
Kate.

Hi,

In reply to the Question about Alfred Mettam, I think you might be on about my Great Great Grandfather Alfred who ran the Plough Inn at Bracebridge and Married Annie Evison (my Great Great Grandmother).

Alfred Mettam died on the 15th of May 1930 and I have been to his grave which I believe is at North Hykeham. (I do have a photo somewhere).

If anyone has any info I would love to hear.

Christopher Mettam.

If anyone needs a photograph of the METTAM grave and it can be confirmed that it is at All Saints North Hykeham I am from Hykeham myself and have just bought myself a new dSLR camera, so would be happy to test it out on such a commission :)

Many thanks for the offer but I do have a photo of Alfreds grave.

If memory serves me right it is in an overgrown part of the church yard and doesnt actually have a headstone as such, it is one of those grave monuments that surround the plot and is engraved on the sides. I believe that Annie Evison is in the same plot (his wife, my GG Grandmother) and next to it is the unmarked grave of my Great grandmother Mabel Mettam (Mabel Wilcoxon whos parents owned the Harrows pub at North Hykeham) and her stillborn child (as she died in childbirth around 1920).

My Grandfather and I spent the day there clearing the grave site about 10 years or so ago as it is overgrown.

It would be nice to see how it is now, however I expect it would be heavily overgrown again.

I was at the church a few weeks ago taking some photographs for a University project, and happened to bump into a small party of the wardens who had been tending to the church & churchyard, so although I don't know the grave from memory, perhaps the efforts of yourself and your Grandfather won't have been in vain after all :)

I have just seen the posting by Eileen from 2007 about photographs in this churchyard. The Samuel Herringshaw mentioned was married to my maternal great grandmother (his third wife). I would greatly appreciate it If Eileen could let me have a photo. I also have relations called Sewell buried in this church yard. Thank you.

Hi are you able to say whether or not there are burials in All Saints churchyard for a Thomsd Brown (retired Headmaster of Bracebridge school) who died 1976 and his wife Alice Blanch died 1956.

Many thanks
