Title: Abraham Gould and Andrew Mitchell
Post by: jenjenmm on Sunday 09 September 07 05:24 BST (UK)
Hi-

I have a copy of a relative's wedding certificate. It is between William Mitchell (father-Andrew Mitchell) and Elizabeth Gould ( father-Abraham Gould). They were married at the parish church in St. Paul, Bristol. They were married on August 22, 1859. It lists the bride and groom's ages as "full". I am assuming that is they were about 20 when they married then they were born about 1839 which means the fathers (Andrew and Abraham) were born about 1819.

I have found some information(census) for Andrew Mitchell but would love to find out more.  Can anyone help with that.
Also-I need help with Abraham Gould. I have not been able to find out anything on Abraham Gould or his daughter, Elizabeth.

Thanks in advance-
Jennie

Hi Jennie,

Have you found William and Elizabeth on subsequent census? What are their birth years and birth places then? What's Abraham Gould's occupation from the marriage cert?

Is this William in 1851?

 :)

I can see the family in 1841 - give me a shout if you need details.

Was Elizabeth born ca. 1837 Holcombe Somerset? If so, the see she's in service at Kilmersdon  in 1851. Not having much luck with 1841 for now  :(  Edit: see below  :)

I'm on a track but I may be completely wrong ...

Is this your couple in 1871?
RG10/2541 16 23
Bristol, Clifton
North Green Street

William Mitchell, head, 34, Labourer, b. Bristol
Elizabeth, wife, 34, b. Culumpton? Somerset
William C, son, 10, b. do.
Ann S, dau, 9, scholar, b. do.
James Gorton, brother in law, mar, 23, visitor, b. do.

Trying to trace the brother in law back, I can't see a matching James Gorton but there is a James Gould, whose father is Abraham ...

Winterley? Farm

Abraham Gould, head, 54, Farmer of 80 acres, b. Somerset Ashwick

James, son, 14, scholar, b. Holcomb
Louisa, dau, 11, scholar, b. Chilcompton
John A, son, 8, b. do.

So .... was your Abraham a farmer?  :)

Hi-
Thanks so much for the info.

Gould:
I believe that this is the same Abraham because he has a daughter Elizabeth and there is an Emma. On the marriage cert., one of the witnesses was an Emma Gould. He is listed as a Yeoman on the cert. I have no idea what a yeoman is.

Mitchell:
You also have the correct William. On his marriage cert., he is also listed as a Yeoman and Andrew is listed as a Brewer. The wedding cert. also lists a John Mitchell as a witness.

Thanks for your continued help....

Yeoman: A farmer who cultivates his own land, especially a member of a former class of small freeholders in England. :)

Does anyone have access to pre 1837 records for marriages? I was on the LDS family search website and saw that:

For William Mitchell-his baptism date was Nov. 8, 1835. His parents were Andrew and Ann. He apprently has some siblings: Andrew and ? John. The only wedding cert. for an Andrew and Ann was for an Ann Quantrell of Liverpool, Lancashire. This cannot be right as it is so far from Bristol. Also, the 1851 census says that Ann was from Devon. It also doesn't mention the younger Andrew (bap. Apr. 22, 1838) I am trying ti get Ann's maiden name and be able to get Andrew's parent's names.

For Abraham Gould-Is Somerset Ashwick anywhere near Charles, Devon? Could these be the same person?

Thanks for the help-
Jennie

Hi again Jennie,

Here's the 1841 census showing 2 siblings indeed:

1841
HO107/377/1 42 28
Clifton, Gloucestershire
Cumberland Buildings 20

Andw Mitchell, 30, Labourer, not born in county
Ann, 25, not born in county
William, 5
Andrew, 3
John, 1

A birth cert for Andrew jr. or John would give you Ann's maiden name (for instance: Andrew Mitchell, June 1838 Clifton, 11 256)

Not sure I understand your question re Abraham  :-[
There's a very good match on the IGI: Birth 6 January 1807, christening 8 March 1807 Ashwick, partents James and Betty

Tati-
Thanks for the info from 1841 on the Andrew Mitchell's. I will order a birth cert. for Andrew

As far as Abraham.............I know that most paperwork says that he was from Ashwick, Somerset but I was on the GenesReunited site and when I researched Abraham Gould, most results people had were an Abe. Gould from Devon.

Thanks again-
Jennie

Do the people who have Abe born Devon in their tree also have the children we have found? Otherwise I don't see any reason for thinking they are the same person  ???

Hi Jennie

Ashwick is just a few miles from Chilcompton in the north Somerset area. I would think the Abraham born there was your man. Charles is near Barnstaple in north Devon - a mile or two from where I'm typing this! - a long way (in those days) from the Somerset coalfield area.
An Abraham Gould (of Midsomer Norton) married Sarah Ashman at Kilmersdon on 8 April 1833 - this looks like a possibility for the marriage. All these places are within a 5 mile radius

Tati-
I haven't heard from any of the "Devon" people yet. But after what Steve said, together with what you said, he does look like the wrong one. I will follow the lead for the Midsomer Norton Abe. Gould with Sarah Ashman. I will see if I can confirm with a birth cert. Like I have said in other topics.....it helps so much when I understand the geography (thanks Steve) since I am in the U.S.

Thanks for the help-
Jennie
