Title: completed thank you - 1841 - William Hughes
Post by: ddhughes on Friday 07 September 07 17:30 BST (UK)
Could someone please lookup 1841 census for William Hughes of Great Gidding he died in 1845 aged 77, so his age on the 1841 census should be 73. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

had a look at great gidding in the 1841 census could not find a william so if he was out of his birth county it would'nt say where he was born.
had a look for william hughes born between 1759-1769 and there were seven living out of county
one born 1769 occ tailor living with sarah hughes the other ones were born 1761 -1766. if you want me to post the full entry for the 1769 one i will

Hi Wozzle,

yes if you could post that entry that would be great, I don't have a lot to go on, so it might be a start.  I have a feeling that William was born in Wales, so I thought I might find that info on the census, I am slowly gathering info about his sons marriages, so hopefully a Sarah will come to light.  Or because Williams first wife Alice died in 1820, it could be possible that he re-married...life really is a jigsaw puzzle, isn't it....

Hi Debbie

Where did William die?
I can't  see any FREEBMD death of a William HUGHES /HEWS / HEWES in Oundle (the RD for Gt Gidding) 1847 to 1850 - though perhaps it's not yet transcribed there,

Do you know his occupation?

Remember the 1841 Census was suposed to have ages rounded by 5 years, so his age in 1841 Census won't necessarily reflect a YOB of 1768/69 in line with his age at death.

Cheers

I think he died in Great Gibbing, as that is where he is buried.  I have no record of his occupation, I would have to get his sons marriage certificate for that I suppose, that should be my next option, George Hughes M: Mary Plowman, not sure of marriage date but their first child was born John Hughes 18th Oct 1835.

Debbie

I am off for the weekend, will reply to any posts when I get back O.K.

There is a William Hughes death in Oundle registration district in the June quarter 1845 (and a William Hughs in Sept quarter 1844) which ties up with your burial details.

But like Wozzle I can't find him in 1841

No marriages in Hunts of a William Hughes/Hews 1820-37

Hmm, Oops and Sorry!   :P :-[

Not sure where my brain was earlier, thankfully you checked it David :-)
I was dead sure I checked the Oundle deaths Sep 1837 to 1850 for William - I  must have had the wrong start year in (1847, as I also typed incorrectly earlier)

Hi, wozzle

Are you able to find out if there is a marriage record for William & Sarah?
Because if it is after 1820, then this would be his second marriage.

It's an enormous leap of faith to even consider that William (and Sarah) in Thornbury Gloucs is the same William in Hunts, 150 miles away.

If William married Alice in Gt Gidding, she was buried in Gt Gidding in 1820, he died in 1845 in Oundle RD which includes Gt Gidding, and he was buried in Gt Gidding, I think there's every chance he was in, or close to, Gt Gidding in the intervening years. It would be pretty unlikely for him to move to Gloucestershire and then move back to Gt Gidding again. As I said, there were no William Hughes - Sarah marriages in Hunts 1820-37

The 72 year old tailor in Thornbury Gloucs in 1841 appears to have been buried in Thornbury on 14 Dec 1843 age 77 - both 1841 and burial ages are notoriously suspect - but I think you can rule him out. If the marriage isn't on the IGI at www.familysearch.org it will be difficult to trace them. A Sarah Hughes 76 widow born Bath Somerset was still living in Thornbury in 1851, mother in law of William Bailey 46 and his wife Jane 37 (presumably Sarah's daughter)- according to FreeBMD William Bailey and Jane Hughes appear on the same page in the Sept 1839 marriage index at Bristol registration district. Forget Thornbury!

But...

Polebrook Northants is 4 miles from Gt Gidding. In Polebrook in 1841 there's a William Hughes 70 independent, born in Northants. 70 in 1841 covered an age range of 70-74. Oundle registration district also included Polebrook. Might be worth researching further - starting with his death cert to see where he died.  But there was also another William Hughs who died the previous year in Oundle RD

Hi Debbie,

Obviously I'm coming to this conversation rather late, I'm also descended from William Hughes and wondered if you ever located a birth location?

- Jo (who descends from his convict son, also William)
