Title: Brisbane Mini Meet - We Did It .. . and it was great.

For all those interested there is going to be a Mini Meet at South Bank Brisbane on the 7th October at about 10.30am. This time is NOT written in stone as some people travelling from the Gold Coast and Toowoomba and we don't want them to get up at the crack of dawn do we. This is just a general time for us to meet up.

But it's the 7th October at South Bank and everyone is welcome.

I can't change the flights now, they are frequent flyer point ones, so they charge a bucketload if you want to change anything :-\
If only I'd seen the other thread earlier!! That will teach me to check Rootschat a bit more often!! :D

If you have some way of talking with those from the past - a number of my family members came here by canoe - never having been sighted on an immigration list or shipping manifest - so they could give you directions for a safe passage 8) 8)

PS I'm a possible - family issues may interfere

For anyone having trouble finding the Stanley place car park (I sure had a nightmare trying to find it in a book and on the net) - take first left (lights) over the Grey Street Bridge - then follow yourself around a circle ;D ;D - its the closest access to the library. If you are early, nice coffee shop at the library (serves wine and coffee ;D and probably sunday brunch). If you are late this car park will probably be full! Last time I was there parking was $10 - no time limit.

Ferry ride up/down the Brisbane River,
Bus rides [all day Bus, Train, Ferry co-ordinated excursions]!!

If I drive you can certainly come with me. Still considering that - very bad at driving in Brisbane when I don't know where I am going!! :o Otherwise, I'll know what buses we can catch!

The State Library is magnificent, in a word. Makes you proud to be a Queenslander (like many other things!)

Will be back in touch with you soon about our Toowoomba miniscule meet, now that the trauma of the root canal procedure is subsiding! Doesn't look as though anyone wants to join us...

Yes Barbara, you forgot me .... though you did remember me in the first list ???

Barring all medical emergencies I'll be there.

I hope not to get into another scrape like I did last weekend at the Riverfire at Southbank - came from the train station down the hill, saw my shoelace was undone, bent over to do up, and dislocated my hip ..... a rather painful start to the evening's activities. So I missed everything (I'd only arrived 5 minutes before) - no fireworks, no jets, nothing except the inside of the RBH Emergency and X-Ray Departments for about 7 hours !!! So now I'm home, resting, being very careful, and making sure I don't do that again.....

I'm well enough now if I'm careful, but I should be a lot better for 7 October.

Hope everyone else is in better health than I am .......

I'm a "maybe" otherwise I would be instantly offering to meet MarieC & Jenny do the trip into town. I may know closer to the event but currently have "issues" (Don't we all!)

Meanwhile - my carpark instructions - drive over the Grey street bridge & turn left - assume you are travelling FROM the north. If anyone coming from the south side (I think Barbara lives on the Southside) followed those instructions you would end up at the XXXX Brewery, which could be an alternate meeting place ;D ;D

It will be great to have you with us, and I'm sure Barbara will come up with a meeting place in the near future!

Jenny and I will get there somehow - there are plenty of ways of getting from Toowoomba to Brisbane. Trains on the Ipswich line are only once an hour on Sundays, so we'd have to have very precise timing to park at a train station and go to Southbank that way.

We each wrote a message on a piece of paper. A message that only someone from RC would be able to interpret. Would have looked like total fools if either of us had been made stand around for a while, but luckily we got to the meeting point at pretty much the same time. Don't know how we knew that each was the other........... if that makes sense........ but we just seemed to know.

May have something to do with the desperate facial expression and the glazed over eyes.......... all those hours on the computer. ;D ;D

I've only just seen this thread. Wish I had seen it earlier as 7 October is no good for me as I will be down the Gold Coast watching daughter in a football tournament.

I can't believe it, Southbank is only 35 minutes from my place and I can't make it. :(

BTW 7 October is last day of school holidays and I should imagine Southbank will be packed to the hilt, although the main pool is closed for repairs over the school holidays (somebody goofed there!!).

Fish & Chips on the grass banks overlooking the river is always nice or one of the many cafes and restaurants are also great for lunch but get in early. The Ship Inn pub on the main street of Southbank is handy for a quick glass of vino (or two ;D) but will be packed. A walk along the rivers edge across the Goodwill Bridge to the Botantical gardens is nice as well or you could duck across the Grey St bridge and hit Jupiters casino...whatever takes your fancy ;D Also check the Suncorp threatre as there could be a show on.

Just a tip, wear comfy shoes!!!!!

I've just been talking to Stephanie (from the Library) and she's advised me Oct 7th is the WORST day we could have gone down on. They are going to be very short staffed on that day with only four members there.

I've booked two reader/printers for anyone who wishes to use them so that's OK. I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeely need numbers for who will be there and Stephanie said she would do what she could re a short tour of facilities.

Post by: Tephra on Friday 05 October 07 06:01 BST (UK): Just to let anyone know who would be catching a train from Southside, there's going to be work on the line so people will have to get off the train at Kuraby - bussed to Yeerongpilly and then on the train again. All this will be adding at least 30 minutes to the journey. So plan ahead.

Do check your bus/train times just in case.

I thought if I drove to Sunnybank, caught the train to Sth Brissy and back, I could spend almost 2 and 1/2 hours with you guys. Now it looks like less time.

I'm seriously wondering whether it's worth all this stress trying to plan things so I can spend the maximum time possible with you all only to have QR muck it up with their track work.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm willing to listen.
However, I don't drive in the city as I recently went deaf in one ear and traffic is a bit of a nightmare for me at present.

Post by: Ruskie on Friday 05 October 07 08:45 BST (UK): For anyone who is thinking of going by train, IF you can go by bus, express bus services are often quicker than the train for those further out in the suburbs, but on the down side times can be a bit unreliable if you're waiting at a bus stop on the side of the road. I hate QR.

Jackie, there are express buses from Browns Plains to the city. Check journeys and times on the transinfo site. If you're familiar with the area, you can park at Garden City Shopping Centre and it's 10 minutes into town on the busway - buses are frequent. There is also a bus station at Eight Mile Plains with loads of parking over the road. Make sure you get on an express bus on the return journey too.

From Springwood 9.25 which gets into Brisbane at 9.51.

I think the platforms should be clearly marked where you are catching the bus. If you get there 10 minutes early, I'm sure you would find it with no hassle.

You did a great job of organising it, Barbara! ;D ;D It was a nice balance of activities - a getting to know you coffee, then a spell in the library during which I think I found one elusive ggrandfather (though his wife and children still seem to have swum to Australia!), then lunch and a nice little puzzle surrounding Barbara's spoon to test our brains, then another brief spell in the library before coming home!

A day very well spent!! ;D ;D Lovely to meet other SEQ Rootschatters!

So a double celebration mind you his big brother was born on the 6th October and we all said then "Isn't it good he wasn't born tomorrow on Poppa's birthday he will have his own day" but this little one had a mind of his own!!

Anyway glad you all had a great time and are lucky enough now to put a face to the name!!!!!!
