Thanks for the link bedfordshireboy. Sadly, it doesn't look like they hold the particular records I am interested in. 1900 - 1935.

Looks like our Mr Dilley has found another way to evade discovery :-\

Hello Jillie,

In Kelly's directory of Bedfordshire 1936 - for Southill it lists

Dilley Arth.  Market gardener, Stanford
Dilley Ernest market gardener, Stanford

Stanford is hamlet 1 mile south of Southill

I have the odd Dilley in my Southill tree, albeit 19th century

We like a challenge! Give us a clue

A challenge is one thing. The sage of our missing Sid Dilley would bore the pants off you!

We're trying to track several Sid Dilleys born just after the turn of 20th the century. We have absolutely no idea where he was born. We have several possible birth certificates, one from Stanford Southill born in 1906. We know from searching the Islington electoral register that our Sid appears there in 1935 married to an Elsie Dilley (and bizarrely calling himself William). We wanted to see if the Sidney Dilley (father Arthur Dilley, labourer) ever appears and then dissappears from the Southill registers. If nothing else just to eliminate him as one of our possibles

Wish I hadn't askedI  I remember that thread on the General board now, only because of that well known England - Australia cricket dismissal - Lillee caught Willey bowled Dilley

The Death Index shows a Sid Dilley born 10 May 1903 dying Jan 1992 at Stevenage; a Sidney Charles Dilley born 13 April 1905 dying at Hitchin in March 1987, either of whom could have been from Southill

Over to you John, see how slick you are at pulling white rabbits out of hats

David

so it's nothing to do with that quote  " The batsman's Holding, the bowler's Willey " is it ?  cannot be - as he's West Indian & of course it'll be a two-handed requirement.

Twas the other way round, despite some of the hits on google: the bowler was Michael Holding, the batsman was Peter Willey.

Another Johners classic!

.... but now being serious & helpful, the Beds Archives say that they have the following...

http://domino.bedfordshire.gov.uk/bedscc/sdcountyrec.nsf/web/thepage/Register+of+Electors

so suggest you email them on archive[at]bedscc.gov.uk & see if they have your information

Most of the stuff about cricket was probably riveting but went straight over my head. The last post from John was exceedingly useful though and I will email them tomorrow,

cheers

Hi

Electoral rolls are not in alphabetical sequence by name but are listed by address so can be difficult unless you have a likely address
