Having a common surname is certainly a drawback in this instance! I am trying to find details of my great grandfather JOHN YOUNG. According to his marriage certificate (31 May 1896) to Mary Ann Spooner, and the 1901 England Census it would seem he was born in April or May 1867 in Finchley (according to Census). His father was also a John Young. He was deceased by 1918, possibly in WW1.
His children with Mary Ann were John (1897), Edward (1899), Minnie (1902), Joseph (1905) as well as Ellen, Mark, Denis and Dorothy. As of the marriage date he was living at 103 Axe Street, Barking and later at 96 King Edwards Road.
As I am a Young myself I am keen to be able to trace John's birth and parents, especially as I have managed to do so with all other branches of my family tree!

Hi there,
I f you have not already checked out BMD Homepage it may be worth doing so as there are quite a few births recorded there for various John Youngs at around that time. If you find a possible match the birth the birth cert will give parents names address etc.

I Have looked on 1891; Ther are no immediate candidates.
As you have the certificate, you should be able to supply the occupations of both John Youngs.
That should give us more to work on.

John (son) was a Gas Stoker, John (father - deceased) was a railway foreman. I did think I had a good lead through an 1881 Census record that had John Young's father and son (correct age) with son born in Highgate but tracing them through to 1891 (indexed under Yang!!) their occupations were (son) fitter & turner and (father) groom / coachman - which seem incompatible??
According to my father John was killed in WW1 but I can't find a corresponding record in the Commonwealth War Graves site and I don't think many 50-y-o men went to war did they? If he did serve in WW1 perhaps there is some Army record I can access (although none online? - I am in Australia).

I would not have expected anyone to have become a railway foreman overnight, so I suspect that the 1891 record that you found is not correct (and the marriage cert to have shown the father's occupation at his death).
Was the Axe Street address on the marriage certificate, or has it come from a later birth cert?
Did the 1881 census record you found have the correct line of work? Also, what was the groom's declared age? that would reveal (in)consistencies in his records.

Hi Turf-tycoon. I have been looking for a John Henry Young no birth date, I have a Ellen Young born 1879 West Ham. who married 1896 to a Ernest May. her father is John Henry Young trade Gas fitter.
On 1881 census there is a John Henry wife Mary A . could this be the same family.His trade gas/works.

I've finally tracked down my John Young. He was born in Paddington in 1865 and found at Finchley in the 1881 Census. Unfortunately no known connection to the family you seek.
