Hello all
John S Povah was born abt 1824 in England he moved to Canada, I am not sure when, but I have a marriage for him to Catherine Scott in Holton, Onterio, 11 Dec 1858.
Then I find him again on the 1881 Winnypeg, Selkirk, Manitoba census, but his wife is younger then he and named Mary J born abt 1852 Ireland, with 5 children first born in abt 1871 Onterio.
If this is his 2nd wife can any one help me find a marriage for John and Mary, and may be a death for Catherine, as I have hit a brick wall, and really would appreciate any help you can give me.
Regards Sue

I can't find a death for Catherine.
With such a large age difference, maybe John ran off with the younger Mary J?
Anyway, I found a birth for the youngest child born in Ontario, Eva.
Misspelled PORAH on the index.
Birth: Eva Lizetta
Dec 4 1876
Father: John S. Povah
Mother: Mary Jane Galvin.
Father's prof: Joiner
Residence: Marham Village.
Will look for more.

Another one spelled PORAH.
3rd June 1872
John Francis
Father: John Sumpter Povah
Mother: Mary Jane Galvin
Father's Prof: Carpenter
Residence: Hamilton

Hi JJ and Janice
First can I thank you both for your help.
Yes JJ you have help me a lot with this one, its still making me crazy, I think that their were 2 John Povah in Canada at the same time.
I don't think Emma Jane father John, ( with wife Jane ) was John Sumpter Povah.
John Sumpter Povah I believe was 97 when he died, in B.C I think he married Catherine Scott, in 1858, I don't know if she died, or if he walked out on her.
But I am sure it is him living with Mary Jane in 1881, and if it is him, on the 1901 census for B.C. did he walk out on Mary Jane too, or just working away?
The fact he may have invented a Hinged Chair, is good as we all ready have 2 inventors in the family, so he could be one of mine.
I will keep looking and if I ever sort it all out I will let you all know
Thanks again for all your time and help
Regards Sue :) :)

I missed your reply, Sue...my first email gets marked as read for some reason...
Yes, it does seem to be a different John for your Emma, but the same
John S. in all the documents if anyone ever wants to search him out it is all there...
Now where is your John? and did he ever come to Canada?
or did just Emma Jane venture over here ...do you have proof she was born here, as census data is often way off base... ( & Where IS she in 1881? ) ?? ::) J.J.

Hi JJ
I am sorry, I did as you said, what did I miss, it must be me I can not see for looking. who did you find.
Regards Sue :-[ :-[

Sorry it was just a general comment...meant to put "databases"
Here is a Povah in B.C. who may be descendant of Frederick or Arthur
with an email address which may not work anymore as it is live...
so maybe put POVAH family in your subject line to indicate that you aren't a spammer...I imagine he gets lots of it ::) :P ;D J.J.
He plays African drums...how cool is that?

Hi, Sue,
It appears that my uncle, Dennis G Tilt (to be formally confirmed) married a Mavis Povah in Sunderland during the war (1944).
I was suprised to find the marriage of the council website as I thought I knew all the Tilt`s in this area (free search): http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/pages/registrars/
Hope this is of some use to you,
Kind regards,
Jim
