I wonder if someone could help me please to save me having to purchase two birth certificates for James Whalley. There are two births in this name recorded in the BMD index, both Q1 1864 in Liverpool and I was wondering if anyone was going into Liverpool they could have a look for me. I don’t even know that if I have the details of the parents in each case that I will be able to say which is the right James Whalley. I can’t find his marriage certificate so don’t know his father’s name. If anyone can help, I’d be very grateful.

Hi
I don't think anyone will be able to access the actual entries for you. You have to pay to get the certificates before you can see the details. There are some possible matches in 1871 but without his marriage you are a bit stuck. Even looking for baptisms is not going to help without that to confirm his father. What information do you have? If you can quote a later census entry and wife and children then someone may be able to help you.

Hi Andrea
I don't have any info other than census returns and as I said I just don't know which of the two James Whalleys is the right one. Not to worry - I'll have to think of something else. Thank you anyway.

Look up completed.

Hi Rosa
Looking at the IGI batch numbers for Liverpool churches around the time, it shows only two James Whalley's (but not 1864)
James Prescott Whalley ch 26/1/1863 St Peter
father - James, mother - Catherine
James Henry Whalley ch 23/4/1867 St Mathias
father - George, mother - Selina

I am sure that if you tell us what you do have you may have a chance of someone finding the marriage for you. Have you got a birth certificate for a child to show the mother's maiden name. You are half way there if so. If not, it is more practical to spend money on that as it will enable you to make headway.

Thank you all . I’m quite new to RootsChat and find the help everyone is prepared to give very heartwarming. I hope I can reciprocate in time.
I recently discovered that a cousin knows almost nothing at all about his father’s family and as it’s his 60th birthday in October, I thought it would be nice to give him a family tree for his birthday. I’ve done quite a lot of research on my own and my partner’s family but realise that I’ve still a lot to learn!
The information I have is as follows:
My cousin’s father was James Whalley, b. 05 July 1904, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. I know the family lived at The Green, Poulton-le-Fylde, and that James had a sister Mary. The family appear in the 1901 census at the The Green, Poulton:
James Whalley, head, b. abt. 1864 in Liverpool
Mary, wife, b. 1875 in Liverpool
Robert, son, b. 1895 in Accrington (James b. 1904 named his first son Robert)
Christina, dau. b. 1899 in Preston
Mary E, dau. B. 1901 in Poulton-le-Fylde
I have the birth certificate of Mary Ellen, b. 1901 - father James Whalley, general labourer; mother Mary Whalley, nee YOUELL.
Also of James, b. 1904 - father James Whalley, general labourer, mother Mary Whalley, formerly YOUENN
Redjed1 has done a search for me in Liverpool for Youell/Youenn marriages but there were none to James Whalley. I had already posted a request for help with this marriage and have received help from several RootsChatters with the result that I have traced the YUILL family back to Glasgow. I’m awaiting the marriage certificate of Mary’s parents who were married in Liverpool. However, the marriage of James Whalley and Mary Youell has not come to light. Maybe they weren't married? In the BMD index, there are two James Whalleys born in Liverpool in Q1 1864 – v.8b p.43 and v.8b p.210, also the two listed in redjed1’s post above. Even if I send for all the birth certificates, I still don’t think I'll know which is the right James. Perhaps someone will have an inspirational idea.
Sorry this is so long.

Hi,
We could be looking for a later marriage - if at all :'(
It looks like daughter Christina was registered as a Youell in Preston. September, Qtr. 1898 Volume 8e Page 679.

Interesting! There is quite an age gap between Mary and James. Have you checked Robert's birth to see what name he is registered under? Could we be looking at a second marriage for James here?

I have searched extensively but can find no record for James Whalley's marriage. I assume that as Christina was registered as Youell, James and Mary didn't get married until after her birth, if at all. I can't find a birth record for Robert, again after extensive searches. I found the Army record of Robert's death at Flanders and that again says his place of birth was Accrington. I think I've exhaused every avenue. Thanks to everyone for trying to help.
