Hi

I am new to this site.

I am looking for as much info on Harry Thorneycroft M.P. as I can. Does anybody have anything? I understand 'soxmis' on this forum is Harry's great nephew?
I wonder if you have found any information that I haven't been able to find yet - eg. did he have any children? I have found that he had a nephew H. Rowley from Boothstown but do not know anything about him - does anybody know? I know Harry died in London - was he buried there? I live in Sussex so can't get to Manchester often to research.
I have found conflicting information from 2 sources about Harry's parents - one source says his parents were Richard Thornicroft and Alice Ann Saville and another source says they were Edward Thornicroft and Elizabeth Atkinson - very confusing. Can anyone confirm?

I would be very grateful for any snippets of info you can give me.

You should be able to get to The Times' obit online from your local library. Just about every obit there includes parents and education, will name any spouses, will also at least provide a headcount of children, might name well-known ones.

Just checked - he is not in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Might be worth emailing the current constituency office; or the local Local Studies/Archives.

Hello Nancynoodle and welcome :)

According to Harry's Times obituary dated 8 March 1956, he:

Was born on 21 February 1892
Began working as a lather boy in a hairdresser's shop at age 9
Became (in due course) President of the National Federation of Hairdressers
Joined the Labour Party in 1912
Served in the Royal Field Artillery in WW1
Pursued his political career in Manchester after the War
Was elected to Manchester City Council in 1923
Married Lily, daughter of Mr Edward Ford, in 1924
Stood unsuccessfully for Parliament (Blackpool constituency) in 1933
Was elected as MP for Clayton (part of Manchester) at a by-election in 1942
Was widowed when Lily died in 1950
Served as MP for Clayton until retirement due to ill health (apparently immediately before the 26 May 1955 general election)
Died in a London hospital on 7 March 1956, aged 64.

There is no mention of any children.

Harry's military records show that when he joined up in 1914 (civilian trade given as "hair dresser", address 17 Ballantine, Newton Heath, Manchester) his next of kin was his mother, Alice Ann Lewis Thorneycroft (this is how her name appears) of 17 Ballantine  22 King Street, Newton Heath, Manchester.

There's no explanation in the margin for the crossings-out. Sometimes next-of-kin details were amended over time as circumstances changed.

Could this be a second marriage for Alice (note spelling of surname)?

Marriage, Mar qtr 1899

Alice Ann THORNICROFT
Henry LEWIS

Prestwich 8d 411

LancashireBMD confirms this couple married at All Saints, Newton Heath

The 1892 birthdate for Harry in his obituary seems to have been a year out, as here is his baptism (from www.familysearch.org):

Harry Thornicroft, son of Richard Thornicroft and Alice Anne Thornicroft

Baptised 18 Mar 1891

St Anne, Newton, Lancashire, England

His likely birth registration:

Harry THORNICROFT, Mar qtr 1891 Prestwich 8d 371

NB this is consistent with his age on his death registration of 65, in contrast the obituary which said he was 64.

Hello there
Dick Thorneycroft, Harry's brother, married my late father's mother Martha.
There is a Beryl Thorneycroft still living in Newton Heath who is related. I've sadly lost contact with her.
I wondered if those searching on here were related?
