Could someone please tell me which cemeteries a person living in the St Anne's Shankill area would be buried in? The burials would be dated in the early 1800s.
Thanks,
Esther

Hi Esther.
Check out the website below.
www.glenravel.com
It has the burial registers for Clifton St., Cemetery online.
The Shankill Graveyard on the Shankill Rd., is another possible, but I don't know if there are burial records for it. If you contact the Cemeteries Office, Belfast City Council, they may have some info. Email address,
parksinfo[at]belfastcity.gov.uk

Esther- I have Gravestone Inscriptions (Belfast, vol. 1 ) which includes Shankill Graveyard. Let me know what names you are looking for and I can chek to see if there's a headstone listed.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I had a quick look at the Clifton St Cemetery Online site which I will search properly later.
The names I am looking for are:
GORDON Thomas and Jane
GORDON Adam
GORDON David
According to a marriage record I have, David Gordon died before 1865.

Esther- none of those names appear in the book. If they are buried there perhaps there's no headstone.

Hi Esther.
The site below lists a lot of Gordons resident in Belfast in mid 1800's.
www.failteromhat.com/
Select the Griffiths Valuations from the index, then search Antrim.
Down has quite a few as well. I never tried any other counties.
If the family originated outside Belfast, it's possible the burial took place in the area the family originally came from.

Dixie

I don't know how well people know the Shankill Road area but if not a little info on the graveyard. It is very very old - I mean 700 years old, perhaps older. (Shankill means Old Church, and the original old church was on this site. When I was young it was completely overgrown. In the 70s, I think, the council cleared most of the gravesones and made it into a little park - just for walking in - leaving some of the gravesones in place. However, most of them have gone. The Graveyards Inscriptions volume is very useful but I am not sure it is complete. My g grandmother was buried and had a distinctive headstone, there but is not in the book. I tried the Cemeteries office a while ago for the records but they said there had been a fire some time ago which had destroyed them. Might be worth trying again though. You might get a different story.

Thanks r1b1c7, for the background info on the cemetery at Shankill Rd. I have become used to the limited information to be found in Ireland but I remain hopeful of tracking down these elusive Gordons. I must admit it is nice to hear that the cemetery has been turned into a park as most cemeteries I come across seem to make way for motorways.
Many thanks once again,
Esther

Hello Esther,
I obtained a copy of the Register of the Parish of Shankill, Belfast, 1745-1761 this afternoon when I was in the city. There are two versions of the surname you are researching in the Register ... Gorden and Gordon.

Hello Christopher. I saw your offer to check the shankill rd cemetery records for Esther and hope you might do the same for me. The Bel City Council told me years ago that they were burnt (maliciously) but they had compiled what they could from headstones etc. I am looking for Richard and Anne Copeland who died 1864 and c1879 respectively. The only information I have is that there was a worn tombstone with an inscription that it was erected by Richard Copeland. So I think it was their family grave. Possibly where his father and mother were buried before him. I would be most grateful for any clues in this regard. Gabby

Welcome to Rootschat Gabby. I'm the one who had Gravestone Inscriptions vol.1. Two Copelands listed but may not be very helpful.
"Erected by Edward Copeland in memory of his daughter Maria who died 15 Dec. 1866 aged 4 years." one one stone and "Erected by Richard Copeland." on another.
Will extract for Richard Copeland (d.1864) has some interesting details. See www.proni.gov.uk

Thank you Aghadowey. A great surprise to get a reply from my first message. I do have a copy of the Will and it was very helpful in my research. Can't get back before then though and would love to make the connection with Richard Copeland of Armagh circa 1798. Still trying! If I can be of any help from the Dublin end I would be happy reciprocate.Gabby

Hi Gabby,
Welcome to RootsChat.
I have a couple of other books in the Gravestone inscription series as well as The Register of the Parish of Shankill 1745-1761 It mentions the baptism of Archibald Stewart son of Archibald Stewart and Elizabeth Stewart alias Copeland.
Many thanks for replying to Gabby's question Aghadowey.
Gabby if you live close to Dublin maybe you'd join the next Dublin meet. We had a small one in the coffee room at the Dublin City Library and Archives on the Saturday of the Grand National at Aintree this year. I didn't manage to back a winner though.

Thanks for that info. One never knows when it will fit into the family tree. The 'alias' is intriguing. Please let me know about the next dublin meeting. I use the Gilbert/DCity library a lot. gabby

I would be very interested to know if there are any Hamiltons
or Mateers in the Cemetery Records.
Many thanks

Not sure what dates you are talking about but it was Christopher who had The Register of the Parish of Shankill 1745-1761 . I have the gravestone inscriptions book which covers Shankill Graveyard (no Mateers listed but a few Hamilton stones so if you gve me an idea of names and dates I'll check for you).
-
Many thanks for the offer.
I have a Mary Mateer who married a John Hamilton in Belfast circa 1820
and the children were Alexander, Rose Ann, Mary, Annabella and David
born between the late 1820s and the early 1840.
Any of those names turn up?
Appreciate your help.
Regards
Jill

Going through Hamilton stones there's nothing really helpful- only names that fit are "Burying place of John" [Hamilton]- no dates- and "Hamilton, 1860."
-
Thank you for looking for the Hamiltons. Much appreciated.

Hello Aghadowey,
I was wondering if you could look up a couple people probably buried in Shankill?
-John McNair, died 1830
-Elizabeth McNair, died 1851
-Children of John and Margaret Cochran, died sometime 1852-1864
Best Regards,
Cliff
-
No McNairs but many people didn't have headstones or some could be illegible.
-
Okay thanks so much for checking! I know they were buried in Belfast, so now I know it's not Clifton Street or Shankill..
-
Hi Clifford
if you go on the link below for Belfastforum Digger or Erin could check the records for Miltown cemetery
