Hello all
I have in my possession at the moment on loan a copy of
"A Nation within a Nation" The Lucas Clan in Australia by Peter McKay second edition June 2004. (1794 pages bound A4 size!!)
It is the family history of two convicts Nathaniel Lucas and Olivia Cascoigne first to Australia and then on to Norfolk Island and back again and their marriage and their 13 children and all of their children's children down to 2004.
It contains the family tree of all the children with numerous family photos down through the generations.
A fascinating book, the statistical information is so interesting IE on the descendants down to generation 10 there is 40.783 direct descendants, it claims a 1 in 642 living descendants as number of population.
The amount of surnames included is just far too many to list but if you have a relationship and would like me to look at the book for you I will, as the copyright says
"All rights reserved. Except as permitted under copy right law no part of this publication may be reproduced or distributed in any form or by any means, or stored in a data base or retrieval system without the prior permission of the author. The only exception being for family historians, who may use parts of this work not exceeding twenty percent in total without prior written approval."
Now you might think that Jenn has not listed Lucas in her Surnames which is the case but my new little grandson is related down the line from his dad to this marvellous couple hence the interest, my grandson great grandmother on his fathers side gave me the book to look at as she knew from my daughter I had a small interest (LOL) in Genealogy!
I was a wee bit jealous as I still haven't found a convict in any of my lines and here is little Mason descendant from two at least!
regards Jenn

Hi Jenn
Sounds like a wonderful book. You are allowed to "share" your grandson's convicts :) :) - I virtually stole my husband's 2 convicts (who also went to Aust (NSW) then Norfolk then Aust (Tas)) & fully claim them as my own (well they belong to my daughter ;D ;D )

Well now thenTrisha
I guess you are right there
some of this mob also went off to Tasmania, one just cannot imagine the life, Nathaniel and Olivia had. They had twin girls who were killed just beofre their second birthday when Nathaniel was cutting down two norkfolk pines and one fell the wrong way crushing the house and killing the twins who were outside on the far side playing and injurying Olivia who had a babe in arms. One just cannot imagine it at all. The book does contain some wonderfull stories of early life in the colonies.

Hello thee
and Welcome to Rootschat.
I only had the book for a short while and have now handed it back to my grandsons great grandmother on his fathers side.
I will make enquiries further as to where you might get a copy.
I believe that the families were able to order a copy to purchase when the new addition came out.
I know there is a history group in The Towers so maybe an enquiry there might help
kind regards Jenn

G'day All, Hoping someone would be able to look up the book "Nation within a Nation" to find either a Minnie Amelia Dunn born Walhalla, Victoria 1871 - Died Carlton Victoria 1943?
Also, a Theresa Annie Dunn, Born sometime after 1920. I believe Theresa married a Robert Richmond Smith who was born in Sale, Victoria.
If possible, could I have parents and siblings of these individuals.
thanking you,
Leigh

Hi there Aussi
Do you feel these two will be mentioned in this book?
thanks Jenn
-
I can tell you tha
DUNN Minnie Amelia died aged 71 in 1943 at Carlton reg no 284
father Dunn Rich and mother Eliza unknow surnames
this is not from the book though

Yes, thanks, those details of her I knew of her. It was her children's details I was more particularly interested in. Minnie Amelia Dunn had 7 children I am aware of leading up to 1910 but was never married. It would appear as though these children had different fathers, not sure of this fact though.
There is a Minnie Dunn living in Ouyen, Victoria in the early 1920's and an Amelia Dunn living in a close by settlement. Any spouses of her children would be of most interest to me.

And do you feel she is mentioned in this particular book please?
Jenn

a possible child perhaps
TELFER Zillan Kleen (usually short for Kathleen)
died aged 49 in 1939 at St Kilda reg no 2041
father gives as Richard James PRIESTLY mother Minnie Amelia Maria Dunn

Must be in the same family however, not the direct line I'm looking for

If anyone has the Book "A Nation within a Nation" The Lucas Clan, I'm wondering if you could advise me of those within the book who were recorded as having been born in Walhalla, Victoria PLEASE?
-
This is an enormous book and is not that easy by any means to give you the names of all of the people who may have their birth places as Walhall Victoria
I have asked the question of you but you havent answered me Do you think for some reason they mentioned in this book
Can I gently suggest to you that you start a thread off giving what information you might have and asking for help to locate the spouses that way
thanks Jenn
-
G'day Jen, that sounds like a good idea and I wish it was that simple. I recall seeing notes about this book in relation to family names of Curtis, Dunn and Newton all living in the South Gippsland area of Victoria.
The reason for my enquiry is that I am very much involved in researching those families who were either born, married, lived or died in Walhalla.

Ah now I realise that you have absolutely no connection to my PEERS family but refused to give me any information simply because my family tree is not on ancestry....you were simply researching those families who were either born, married, lived or died in Walhalla. and of course my ancestor was a mining surveyor at Walhalla.

Minnie was actually living at Linga, west of Ouyen, enrolled to vote at the same address as Edward Michael DUNN, a railway ganger.
Amelia [nee WITHERS] was living at Boinka, also west of Ouyen, enrolled to vote at the same address as Sydney Marcus DUNN, a farmer.

Yes, there is copy held at the National Library of Australia as per their website. nla.gov.au
Your local public library can help you organise access or you can contact the National Library direct. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and handle many family history enquiries with care and respect.

Hi, I shall try and find out if this book is still being printed or where you might find a copy.
Otherwise as JM has advised you will need to contact a library
