Anyone help on finding this chaps parents? I made a previous thread here which makes mention of him, but I still have not been able to find any info.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,113604.msg502201.html#msg502201
I have bought copies of the transcripts of baptisms for Ruan Major and Ruan Minor, but no luck - I also had a look at the fiche at Helston Library for Ruan Major - but couldn't see it myself either.
Not sure where else I can look.
I did find his gravestone in Gunwalloe last week - but no clue on there.
Any help/advice on where to look gratefully received.

1841 has a couple of the right age and place who could be his parents.

Hi,
I can't find an Edward I am afraid. Of Gunwalloe at time of marriage, quite consitant with a birth in Ruan/Ruan Major throughout his Census entries. There are a few possible parents I can see about the area.
George LUGG = Honour HALL 12 Nov 1776 (1 Child Ruan Major 1777 then moved to St Martin in Meneage where last listed is in 1796)
Joseph LUGG = Elizabeth KING 18 Nov 1784 Ruan Major (Only one child listed Ruan Major 1785)
James LUGG of Ruan Major = Sarah LYNNE 25 Jun 1799 St Martin in Meneage (Children born Ruan Major from 1799)
Simon LUGG = Elizabeth PASCOE 26 Nov 1793 Ruan Major (Births Ruan Major from 1793)
James LUGG of Ruan Minor = Mary OLIVER 28 Jan 1795 Grade (Children Grade and Ruan Minor)
Unfortunately I don't see an Edward listed to any of them :'(
From this James and Sarah or Simon and Elizabeth look the most likely candidates. I don't see any clues in his childrens names. (Just an Elizabeth out of these possible parents names)
Cheers Kris :D
-
Thanks for the info.
I had spotted some potential families - but just can't find a connection. He never uses any more names than Edward, which is a real shame. I will have to plot all the children of the potential parents mentioned and see if there is a logical gap, but still won't actually prove anything.
-
sorry to ask but are you sure he was born in Ruan or even Cornwall?
its just that i found a very very early marriage in Devon :~
Edward LUGGER 12 Nov 1627 St Andrews Plymouth to Eliz Baker and wondered if it was related.
also:~
(again very early but maybe conected) Edward LUGG of Langford Budville Somerset, m. Deborah Brown of Norton Fitzwarren on 29. Jan 1722
perhaps another couple to add to Kris' list
James LUGG of Ruan Major m. Prudence GREENLAW of St Keverne by licence on 31st Jan 1771
-
He is on every census until he died and and he did say he was from Ruan/ Ruan Major on them all, that is all I have to go on at the moment.
-
Dear cbcarolyn and Folks,
I cannot help you with finding Edward's parents (but eagerly await the results) however I can tell you where he is buried. He and his wife are on the top of Mount Duneed on the Bellarine Peninsula (Victoria, Australia) looking back over Ocean Grove to Port Phillip Heads that he entered in 1853 in the company of his son William Lugg, an RN trained 2nd mate who worked his passage to Australia with his entire extended family. All prospered. Edward is my ggg grandfather. I drive past the cemetery every day to work with my teenage children and we say hello on most mornings. When they were infants we would go and visit the "great great greats" regularly but it is now a bit passe for them. Definitely from Ruan Major.
-
I think my Edward was buried in Gunwalloe, although I guess I can't be sure which is mine. Henry (Thomas Henry) Lugg is my ggg grandfather and Edward is his father. I don't know any siblings of Henry either he has proved to be a bit of a brickwall - I just have his marriage certificate.
Edward is entered as a shopkeeper.
-
Hi Folks,
A big welcome to RootsChat marwil. Now I am getting really confused here. I think we need to go back to square 1 with both of you. We have been unable to locate a baptism for one Edward LUGG anywhere. Now it appears we have 2 of them. :-\
One was buried in Gunwalloe in 18 Apr 1883 (aged 85 Years). This chap can be traced consistently through the censuses. (= Juliana HENDY 21 Jul 1819 Gunwalloe) He was an ag lab. Now marwil mentions Edward Lugg arrived in Victoria in 1853 along with his son William so we should have 2 Edward Luggs in 1841 and 1851 censuses, yet I see only one ???
Now cbcarolyn has just said son Henry's (Thomas Henry) marriage lists father as Edward a shop keeper. The Edward we have tracked seems to be an ag lab, porter, gardener, and I don't see son Henry. (Thomas Henry) Where is He? What do you have on Henry? Where and when was he born? marwil mentions a son William (a sailor) working his way to Oz with his father Edward and extended family. Please can you tell us more about this family.
Now this Edward we have been looking into in Cornwall does have a son William but this Edward remains in Cornwall and is buried in Gunwalloe, so it is not the same person. marwil what do you know about your Edward Lugg? Do you have the immigration details? He died in Victoria. You know where he is buried. Do you have his death certificate by any chance? A Victorian death cert should list a lot of information including parentage - if known. When did he die and how old was he? Sorry to be asking so many questions but a second Edward Lugg surfacing seems to be making a difficult request even harder to try to solve. We can't find a baptism for one ::)
Cheers................A very confused Kris :D
-
OK, found cbcarolyn's earlier thread re Henry. Given the witness and address on the marriage cert it does seem the family we have been looking at is likely to be Henry's family. I see Henry with the Oppy family in 1841 a few properties from Edward and Juliana. Occupation shopkeeper pretty different but other factors do seem to fit this family. Perhaps he was a shopkeeper for a while in between censuses :-\
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,113604.msg502201.html
Did you ever find the baptism for Henry son of Edward?
Kris :D
-
No I have not managed to find the baptism of Henry. I have noted down every Lugg that was baptised in his era and it is possible that his was not transcribed and I have found all of his siblings, and there is a possible gap. In the census he swaps between Henry and Thomas Henry. I have bought CDs from the transcriptions and looked at the microfiche whilst on holiday in Cornwall this year.
I visited Gunwalloe graveyard this year too and found gravestones of Henry and Edward - they were near each other so this maybe an indication of relationship too?
I have not got a death cert as I thought it wouldn't help me on ancestry - do you think it is worth a request? Perhaps Edward death cert might tell me whether Henry is the son as he would have been alive. Would death Certs that old tell me much?
Thank you for trying to make sense of this

Hi again marwil,
I have been scouting about for this Victorian family. I note 16 Lugg's arrived in 1852 aboard the "Sir Edward Parry". There was an Edward aged 18.
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=24
This Edward is the son of William and Eleanor (Skews) who he emigrated with. The family can be found in St Kerverne in 1841 William is a 40 year old farmer, Elinor is 35 HO107/138/2 Folio 10 Page 12. Edward was aged 7. 1851 in Ruan Major HO107/1913 Folio 99 Page 3. William is aged 51 a Farmer of 26 acres b Ruan Major. William appears to be the son of Simon and Elizabeth baptised 6 Jan 1800 Ruan Major. His son Edward is 17. This Edward later wed Johann Dorothea Paulke in 1867 in Vic. Is this your Edward?
Also on board the same ship was Henry Lugg and family. Ages of Henry and Mary seem wrong..... 1851 census HO107/1913 Folio 101 Page 7 Henry is aged 44 an ag lab. Childrens names and ages seem to fit with immigration records. Looks like this is Williams brother baptised 31 May 1807
Cheers Kris :D

How frustrating for you cb :'(
I know I tried everything I could think of and couldn't find the baptism (even tried nonconformist) so it does appear he was not baptised. As you say all indication is he is Edwards son. Alas no I do not think the death cert will help you unless Henry registered the death. Unlike marwils Oz cert which will list all sorts of goodies. ;)
You have the double whammy here for sure with no baptism appearing either for your Henry/Thomas Henry or for his possible father Edward. Pity the gravestones did not yeild anything further. Did Edward by chance leave a will?
Kris :'(
-
I must admit I don't know how to go about getting the will - I am new to this, is this easy? Do I have to go to the NA in London?
An aunt of mine said that a branch of our Luggs went to Ballarat for mining - but I have not actually found a link - so I wonder if it was because there are Luggs that did go and the link maybe a long way up the tree.
-
Hi cb,
Being a Labourer I am really not holding my breath that he would have left a will but worth a look for sure. See Genuki - Probate Records
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Cornwall/
If Edward was Simon and Elizabeths son, then these Vic families are his brothers and their families. marwil can probably tell us what they did in Vic. They appear to be a part of the farming community in Cornwall.

Dear Kris and cbcarolyn
I seem to be having some trouble replying so I will try again. Firstly I was in error. In my enthusiasm at seeing an interest in this section of the Lugg family I omitted to check the family data and relied on memory. My ggg grandfather on Mt Duneed is in fact William Lugg snr, born 1799, died 1898. See I got the 8 in the wrong century! His son William jnr brought the extended family to Australia aboard the "Sir Edward Parry" as Kris points out. There are Edward Luggs up and down and sideways in the family tree. At least those are my excuses. Willliam snr is the son of Simon Lugg/Elisabeth Pascoe as Kris points out and he had the 26 acres at Ruan Major. Before that Alexander, 1692; George, 1650; George, 1620 and Thomas 1580.
William jnr tried his luck very early at Ballarat (1852+) and ended his days in steady employment (as many of them did) in the position of high trust as the battery manager of the North Queen Mine on Black Hill at East Ballarat (all the gold passed through his hands). However he paid a price and died of stomach cancer induced by the gold extracting cyanide of the battery. His brothers, father and cousins were successful shopkeepers, farmers and graziers in the Geelong/Western districts of Victoria and the family are now thoroughly respectable citizens. Johann Dorothea Paulke who married Edward in 1867 is one of ours too.
-
I must have missed this post, and have returned looking at family tree things in the last few months.
Thank you both for your replies. It is fun this tree lark, but so frustrating to know where to go next.
So the link to Ballarat stems from siblings of Edward, would always love to hear any more information you get. As yet I have not moved any further forward.
-
Hi, I am new to this site but have information about Edward Lugg born 13th July 1797 at Ruan Major, married Julian Hendy in 1819 and had 9 children. He had a brother William George born about 1800 and buried 1892 at Mount Duneed. Edward was buried in 1883 at Gunwalloe. Are you still interested in him or have you found all this out already? Edward was my ancestor, my mothers maiden name is Lugg.
-
I am still interested I never found any family for him - just a few guesses. How do you know of the relationship?
I have set up a web site about my family tree here:
http://familytree.craftsbycarolyn.co.uk/ - you will see I have found the gravestones at Gunwalloe as there are pics on there. the actual tree is under Hicks towards the bottom of the page
-
Hi again,
I found out a lot of information when I met a distant cousin at the genealogical society of Victoria some years ago, he had been out to England & researched a lot of the early family tree, I had the certificates and family memorabilia for the Australian part.
The Lugg tree as known to me is:
1st generation - Thomas Lugg b 1589 m Faith Andrews 1614 (9 children)
2nd Gen - George Lugg b 1615 m ? 1647 (3 children)
3rd Gen - George Lugg b 1648 m Jane James 1683 (9 Children)
4th Gen - Alexander b 1648 m Mary Dale (9 Children)
5th Gen - Simon Lugg m 1. Christian Dale 1777 (4 Children) then 2. Elizabeth Pascoe 1793 (5 children)
6th Gen - Edward Lugg b 1797 m Juliann Hendy 1819 (9 Children)
(This is the Edward you ask about - he had a brother William who is the William buried at Mt Duneed)
7th Gen - Samuel Hendy Lugg (Third child of Edward) b 1823 m Mary Chegwidden 1847 came to Austarlia with his wife and 4 children to mine gold at Ballarat.
8th Gen - Samuel Hendy Lugg Jnr b 1849 m Lucy Ellen Boyton cummings in Melbourne in 1873 (6 Children)
9th Gen - Alfred Lugg b 1876 m Ada Dawber 1900 (10 children)
10th Gen - Harold Frederick Lugg ( My grandfather) b 1904 m Dulcie harris ( 3 children)
11th Gen - Rae Lugg b 1938 (My mother) m John Davis 1958 (3 children)
Further specific information on your Edward - he was the one of the five children from Simon Luggs second marriage to Elizabeth Pascoe. According to our records he was born on 13th July 1797 at Ruan Major. He married Juliann Hendy at Gunwalloe in 1819. For many generations afterwards, descendants who had travelled to Australia had Hendy as a middle name. Edward and Julianne's 9 children were: Ann born 27th July 1819, Edward born 25th May 1821, Samuel Hendy born 28th August 1823, Henry born 26th February 1826, Grace Hendy born 31st October 1828, William born 9th October 1831, Julianna Hannah born 17th January 1834, Elizabeth born 4th April 1836 and Ellen born 25th July 1838.
I hope all of this is helpful......
-
I had found Simon Lugg but not managed to find the record of Edward Lugg being his son - could find all other children mentioned. I did stop by the library at Helston to check the records but couldn't find it there either.
Thank you for this information I will note it all down. An aunt that now owns a cottage in Gunwalloe did know that there was a connection with Ballarat - but I had not found it.
My line is to Thomas Henry - you can see it here:
http://familytree.craftsbycarolyn.co.uk/treehicks/p6.htm his sone Edward moved to London.
-
I have found your web site very interesting, I didn't have any information about Juliann Hendy's line so I will be able to add to my tree too. Just some further information about the migration to Australia, firstly a small error on my part, Edwards son Samuel Hendy came to Australia with wife and 2 children, the youngest two were born here. He and Mary Chegwidden came out on the "British Queen" arriving in 1853. I was interested to see there was another Mary Chegwidden way back in your tree. Two more of Edwards sons also came to Australia - William arrived in 1855 on the ship "Canaan" , Edward Jnr's year of migration is unknown. I have some information about the other siblings that stayed in England, but you probably have this.
-
Much of my info is from internet records although I did visit the graveyard at Gunwalloe and Helston library whilst on holiday, and have a couple of CDs of parish records. Any info is always welcome - I keep coming back to the tree from time to time.
here are the gravestones:

Thank you.

I have put my up to date tree on my website, and on another forum I have been told that Edward Lugg was born in Ruan Major, and married Julian Hendy. His parents were Simon Lugg and Elizabeth Pascoe - which does fit.
I am happy with the marriage - although I do not know which Julian Hendy it is as there were 2 born within months in Gunwalloe, and this other contact is saying it should be:
Father Joseph Hendy mother Elizabeth Grubb
The Cornwall OPC have a good selection of records transcribed and on a web site.

My line follows Thomas Henry -> Edward ->Thomas Freeman (my grandfather, he died before I was born)
