Hi Jody,
I will try and get in to Archives Christchurch later this week.
Is there any particular information you are after? Probates will have names of next of kin and sometimes place/date of birth/death and other info. You can order photocopies of documents from Archives but in my experience there isn't much worth having copied if you are just after the facts above. A lot of it is often legal stuff! I can view the probates for you and note any important details and if there is anything interesting I can take photos for you since digital cameras are now allowed.

Hi Stephanie,
That would be wonderful thankyou. Basically any information you can get including siblings if they contain that sort of information. These are my mums great grandparents and a great great grandfather all of whom had died before she was born, and i am having great trouble locating info about them. Apparently her mother was not interested in family stuff and destroyed most of what she had. Photos mum remembers from when she was a child had been disposed of by the time my grandmother died (1989).
I am clutching at straws so all that you can find will be a bonus.

Hi Jody,
Might not get any siblings - usually it's the spouse and/or children who are mentioned as the beneficiaries - but we'll see.
Your James Peele is on the Christchurch cemetery database:
http://librarydata.christchurch.org.nz/Cemeteries/
I'll probably get to Archives on Thursday.

Hi Stephanie,
Any thing you can get will be a bonus.
Hopefully the one for James will actually say that he was born in England although he was apparently known as one of the first (if not the first) of the colonial painters.
From William Henry i hope to find all his children which will give me the siblings for Henry Edward. Margaret was the wife of William Henry but she died before him so not sure if she will give much although i think the names Fairhurst and Donbavand may be mentioned.

Hi Stephanie
Would you be able to check a probate from my Goldsmith/Bowles lot? Any names would be helpful.
GOLDSMITH Ann Eliza - Waimate, 1913
agency: CAHY
accession: CH145
record: 471
I've been eyeing up someone who Bren found and who I didn't think was one of mine, but now I'm not so sure. He was only 32 when he died (so perhaps died intestate) and if he is mine, his mother would still be alive and might be mentioned.
BOWLES John William - Waimate, 1894
agency: CAHY
accession: CH145
record: 361
I don't know how easy/difficult it is to view the probate records, so please don't worry if you run out of time and can't get to them.
Regards
Koromo

Hi Jody,
If you look at the cemetery database it says James Peele was born in Melbourne. When he died in 1905 he had been in NZ for 2 years. It also mentions a coroner's warrant. He's buried in the Linwood Cemetery which is really close to where I live so if you want I can go looking for a headstone some time.
Koromo,
No problem - I'll look up those probates for you.

Hi Stephanie,
I Have seen that info for James Peele (on the internet) which is why i am hoping the probate may give me more.
On his Marriage cert (1869) it says he was born in St Pancras London, Usual residence was New Zealand (but he was staying in Toorak).
He and his wife Ruth had 6 children all born in New Zealand. Ruth apparently died in New Zealand 1946 (although i have found not record).
So you can see my dilemma
My James was a bank clerk/manager who became a painter and travelled between New Zealand and Australia regularly, with his painting he displayed regularly and apparently made a decent living from it.

Hi Jody and Koromo,
Mission completed! Koromo, I will post your info separately on your Bowles/Goldsmith thread.
Jody,
William Henry Hargreaves had a beautiful handwritten will but unfortunately my camera couldn't get clear pictures so I took copious notes! However you might like to ask Archives to photocopy just the will and send it to you.
William was born in Liverpool and died 24 June 1920.
He appointed the following sons to be trustees and executors:
William Fairhurst Hargreaves, Merchant, b. Lyttelton
James Percy Hargreaves, Bulls, Bank Manager, b. ChCh
Leonard Martin Hargreaves, Merchant, b. ChCh
The entire estate was left to the said trustees. They were to pay the following:
To my daughters Mrs Myra Lilian Tibbits (wife of Edward Tibbits, Lieutenant Commander) and Constance Mary Hargreaves the sum of 2000 pounds each.
To Elizabeth Tombs Hargreaves, widow of my son Harold Verney Hargreaves, 1500 pounds.
Each living grandchild 10 pounds each.
The residue of the estate to be held in trust and invested and from the interest pay the following:
My brother John Gleave (?) Hargreaves of Liverpool 50 pounds annually during his life.
Miss Kate Fairhurst of Christchurch, 70 pounds annually for life.
The balance of the interest to be paid to my children:
Myra Lilian Tibbits, Constance Mary Hargreaves,Henry Edward Hargreaves,
William Fairhurst Hargreaves, Walter Herbert Hargreaves, James Percy Hargreaves, Leonard Martin Hargreaves and Edgar Horace Hargreaves
In a codicil to the will Walter Herbert Hargreaves, surgeon of Oamaru, was appointed a trustee and executor.
Margaret Jane Hargreaves, died Sumner, 14 August 1910
Everything left to executors and trustees: Henry Edward Hargreaves, Harold Verney Hargreaves and Walter Herbert Hargreaves of Exmouth England
Henry Edward Hargreaves born Lyttelton, died 16 Nov 1922
Left everything to his wife Florence Amy Hargreaves, born Hokitika.
James Peele died 26 October 1905
To his daughter Florence Hargreaves of New Brighton, he left all his paintings, books and personal effects and belongings for her sole use.
Robert Aherne, journalist, was appointed executor.
Witnesse to the will were Emma Burson and Mary Tubman.
Sorry no place of birth or other details for him.
Hope this all helps!
Cheers,
Stephanie

Thankyou Stephanie,
How can i repay your kindness, You must have got writers cramp with all that. Mum didn't even know that Henry Edward had brothers or sisters. Now i have even more locate.
It surprised me that James Peele left his entire estate to one daughter as he had 6 children. There was also no mention of his wife who was still living(she died 1946)
Once again i say thanks.

Hi Jody,
You're welcome. Other people have helped me with look-ups so I'm happy to help. I've come to a bit of brick wall with my current research so I get a vicarious thrill from seeing others make progress!!
