Hi there, I am trying totrack down arthur Barham. I have his enlistment papers showing that he enlisted into the 83rd Regt on 13th November 1868. His apparent age was said to be 20.. I have sufficient details of Arthur's military service and after, but I am unable to find out anything about him before that date. He states that he was born in the parish of Higham near Bury St Edmonds, so I assume that he he would have been born about 1848. Previous to his ennlistment he was released from the Suffolk Militia.
VCan anyone assist me in this search?

not sure if this is much help,
i have Arthur Barham in my tree ( a very distant relation) he was baptised on 10.01.1823 at Chilham Kent, He maried Elizabeth Smith and his occupation was a corn porter.
he had a child Charles, i have Charles down as being b. circa 1880 which would make Arthur 58 when he was born.

Thanks Toni* I think that your Arthur would be too old for me unless it would be as father & son. As I said mine Arthur was born about 1848 in Higham Parish But thanks for the interest. He is a bit remote from my central line but he holds a certain fascination for me. He married Eleanor Dudgeon in Belgaum (India) in 1881. She was the daughter of a soldier and he was twice her age

On the 1861 census, there is an Arthur G. Barham, born abt. 1844 in Suffolk. He is a stable boy in Yorkshire.

Hi Suffolk*Sue. Thanks for that as well. I did see it. He is the closest but in all of the military records that I have, there is no middle name mentioned. I have tried overseas records as well but will try again in case i missed him.

Hi Daisy & Dave. What can I say. That has to be the Arthur Barham that I have been searching for. My Arthur had 3 sons and he named them, Arthur, Henry & Alfred - coincidence? I did look under variations of the name but not very closely it seems. I am very grateful to you for your interest and results. The door to the past is now open !

Hi Just a quick thought but I am researching BANHAM in Suffolk and have found some of ours listed as BARHAM so might be worth you checking the other that too.

Hi KGB thanks for your interest, I will get a look down that lane as well. I am amazed at the info that is pouring in after such a long period of drought. I only picked up on Arthur again after I re-found his service records after a long while. I don't think that he wanted to be found as his service records folder was out of place in the file and it was only as I was replacing the others back in the box that I spotted him lurking at the back.
Great stuff for me even if he is well off the main trunk

More advice required please. If my Arthur Barham (as indicated on his service docs) is also named as Bareham/Bearham/Beacham and maybe even Banham, what would be the best way of recording him on my tree on Ancestry (for instance)

You can add alternate names on your Ancestry tree. Not sure if/when/how they show up though.
You can also add alternate names and corrections on census data and (I think) bmd indexes on Ancestry.
I always make a point of correcting any mistakes I find on Ancestry, as it's from other's corrections that I've made some very useful connections with distant and not so distant relatives.

Thanks Aulus. I'll put his other possible names as alternate but keep him as Barham. This is what he is shown as in the documents that I have and in the Belfast 1901 census

Arthur Barham was my Great Great Grandfather he was married to an Eleanor Dudgeon. Arthur and family are buried in Belfast city cemetery. Could you give me some more info on him if you have any.
