Greetings from New Zealand
Can anyone tell me how I would get copies of Marriage entries from the Register of the Methodist Church in Ripley> 1892 - 1920 if possible?
Where would the Register be held?
I'd appreciate any advice!
Marlene
-
Hi Marlene,
Not sure where the Register might be held but the church does have a website:
www.ripleymethodist.co.uk
Perhaps an email to them would give you some info. Failing that you could always buy copies of the marriage certificates from the GRO.
Happy hunting,
Nanny Jan

Hi Nanny Jan
Thanks! I have written to the Church _ the editor had no idea where the Register was!
My greatgran emigrated to NZ in 1878 and I have tracked 2,900 of her family members - ain't won the Lottery (yet! ;D) so cannot afford all the Certs.
And I like to get as close to original info as I can and generally the Certs mean there's yet more room for error!
Thanks for the thought!

Hi Marlene,
I'm amazed that the Minister does not know where the Registers are!
Have you contacted the Derbyshire County Record Office to see if they know? You could try www.methodist-central-hall.org.uk if all else fails.
2,900 family members tracked..........I'm impressed!

Kia Ora Nanny Jan!
Must admit I got lucky with 3 - managed to find living descendants and we swapped certs! I had the older ones hatched , matched & despatched 1800s and they filled in with what had happened after the 1901 census.
I don't think the Minister/Vicar was consulted I got the reply from the Editor maybe I'll try again addressing it to the Boss!
Thanks

Hello Marlene,
I've just looked at the online catalogue at the DRO in Matlock and it looks as though they have the registers - http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/Images/NonConformistGuide_tcm2-42780.pdf
They will be able to search and supply a copy of the relevant record for a fee.
All the best,
John
-
Many thanks John! I did find that site last night but just as with yours it flicks over too quickly! I can briefly a see PDF file but it's momentary!
I'll go back to the Derbyshire site and send a letter - I'm sure someone will pass it on!
Grateful for your confirmation!
Thanks
Marlene

Hi Marlene,
This is copied and pasted from the web site. It is pdf and I think I've lost the formatting, but hopefully you can still make sense of it.

Kia Ora John
Thank you very much indeed! :-* I think I'll start with the Nottingham Rd chapel. A few of the family lived nearby or in Wood St but that appears to have closed by the time frame I want 1892- 1920. I guess that's the logical place anyway!
Fingers crossed they will give me copies!
Cheers

If you would like to let me know the names of brides and grooms and approx year of marriages I will "keep my eyes open" when looking through the local newspapers ( which I search through at least once a fortnight). Some of the wedding reports contain a trememndous amount of detail.

Kia Ora Suz
Thank you for such a great offer - I am very grateful!
The time frame for the first born family in Ripley is 1892- 1920 and for those 8 children I have year & qtr and the name of the spouse.
After that I have their children! Again I have year & quarter & names.
These dates will be about the 1920s /1930s.
How does that fit with what you are researching and is that the time frame/s when the reports might appear?
If so I'll send you a list by PM!
In NZ there are wonderful reports - descriptions of dresses, flowers, gifts received, the wedding breakfast, the hymns chosen and where the couple went on honeymoon!
Many thanks!
Marlene
-
Hi Marlene,
If you message me the names and quarters of the marriages I will keep my "eyes open" for the reports -I search through all years-for my family and local history. The areas I cover are Ripley, Heanor , Codnor, Loscoe (but not Derby itself) Wedding reports from years 1920-30 are often quite detailed-and sometimes include gift lists.

Hi Marlene
Remember me ?
I went to Teignmouth to visit your relatives grave.
I live near Ripley and there is a super Family History Group called DARG who meet at the Birchwood Chapel in Somercotes, Derbys every Wed morning. They have many transcriptions of the parish records for Derbyshire and will I am sure hold the entries for Ripley also - they are held chapel by chapel but I think they also have an alphabetical index by surname.
If you need any further help let me know - as I could go up there next Wed for you and take a look.

Tena Koe Mog!
How could I forget the thrill of that particular chase and the wonderful people who helped so much! GIDDAY!
I'm slowly plodding on attempting to track the family fowards!
In the interim I have located Elizabeth Mary's brother and another tragic story! Just waiting for an Inquest now!
I have the year & quarter for marriages of my Ripley lot at least but obviously precise dates and the witnesses (in particular) would help immensely. Do you think the DARG might help? Suz is kindly looking out for any newspaper reports and I have written to Matlock where the Parish Register is held but have not received an acknowlegement as yet!
I don't want to waste your or anyone's time so perhaps you could advise me better?
I can send you a PM or an email with the names if you think the group might be able to help!
I am well & truly in your debt!
Regards
Marlene

Kia ora folks
Please excuse me if I do not reply to messages over the next few days. My dear mother has had a bad fall, broken her hip and because of other complications, her chances of recovery are not good.
I have dashed home to feed the cat, get the necesaries etc and will spend my time with her.
Thanks in anticipation of your understanding.
Regards
Marlene

Dear Marlene,
Don't worry about replying, I will just post anything I find here for you to peruse at your leisure.
I do understand how things are, having experienced a similar situation with Mum in law. Just remember to look after yourself too.

Do you wish to add anything from your connection??
