Hi All,
Can anyone tell me what event happened in the Coal Industry in or about 1872/3 that would cause miners to be blacklisted.
Whatever the problem was it seemed to affect a family in South Shields.
My wife's Grt Grandfather Left Durham for Northumberland around this time.
The family stayed in NBL for about 8 years and on their return to Durham used a different surname.
They did not return to using their correct name for many years.
Can anyone enlighten me please??

my son will know but I think you are referring to the big strike in the 1800 when some men broke the strike and went back to work they were then black listed and the only way they could get work was to change their names I will ask my son tomorrow if you don't get a answer to night

That could be the connection with the miner's bond, where the miners refusal to sign, often ended in conflict, around April 5th every year. The bond was in use before 1800 and came to a end in 1872. It was always biased to wards the coal owner. There were some "large strikes" in 1810,1831 and 1844. There are even records of people being murdered. You can learn some more on this website.

I have to ask though, do your PATON interests have any connection to Perthshire?
My 4th grt grandmother Ann PATON married William TAYLOR on 12th Nov 1790 at Findo-Gask.
They had a daughter Margery born about 1790.
William died and Ann then married Gilbert CRICHTON at Alyth on the 22nd Aug 1802.
As far as I know they had no children, but Ann's daughter Margery, then married Gilbert's nephew William CRICHTON at Alyth on the 12th Feb 1809.
William & Margery had 12 children, 5 of them emmigrated to Australia between 1841 & 1854.
If Ann PATON is known to you I would appreciate it if you would enlighten me on her origins.
At the moment I think she maybe the daughter of Patrick PATON & Elizabeth GILBERT. Their daughter ANN was bapt at Monzie, Perthshire on the 9th Sept 1770.

Sorry no, My Paton line is very Irish ::) ..... indeed family legend has it that the spelling of the name was changed to the scottish version to avoid the persecution of the Irish which was very prevalent.
