Hi! I'm Michael Lean Cole from Argentina and I'm looking for any relatives to Henry Roger COLE, who married Jane Sedgwick LEAN and had:

Caroline R COLE
William James L COLE (my great great grandfather, wife: Ethel BRIDGER)
Julia Jane COLE (husband: Stephen Henry MOORE)

Thanks a lot

Hi cousin in Argentina  ;D

Do you have all the census info on these rellies ...?  Are you looking to go further back or are you just wanting to find live relatives  :)

Hi Deb!

I'm trying to do  both things: go further back and find living relatives as well, but I don't know how to proceed. How do you have access to all Census? Is that the only source of information I should look for? I guess you're very experienced in this so please give some tips.

Greetings from Argentina.

hi Michael, cous  ;D

I use ancestry and the national archives as well as IGI ....International Genealogical Index.

Keith and I have a whole lot on your Ethel Bridger, which I am sure he has shared with you ...well I hope so  ::)

I will search around and see what I can find ...will be back in the morning ...

At least you have found two living rellies already ... :D

Hi again Michael

This is rather strange ...I cannot find the birt/christening of Jane Sedgwick LEAN. I have however found this in IGI (extracted records) ...which I believe are Jane's siblings ....

These are all children of FRANCIS LEAN and Rebecca, all born in Stoke Damerel, Devon.

Alice SEDGWICK Lean
born 5 Dec 1792
chr. 6 April  1796

Francis Lean
born 17 Oct 1795
chr. 6 April 1796

(Alice states on the 1861 census when she is living with her niece , Rebecca,  that she was born at sea ... note the 4 year gap from her birth to her christening!)

William Blinkhorn Lean
b 28 Sept 1797
chr. 10 Dec 1799

Rebecca SEDGWICK Lean
b 6 April 1799
chr. 10 Dec 1799

where is Jane ? ummm  ::)

I am still looking for a marriage of Francis Lean to a Rebecca . (I wonder where the Blinkhorn name comes from ?)

will be back

Deb,

I'm amazed by the tons of information youi're giving to me!

Today is Friday, I'm very busy and I can't wait till tomorrow to begin studying all this data.

The Ethel Bridger side is very complete, thanks to Keith and the Lean Cole side is very promising!

Thanks very much, you're helping me a lot.

the children of William James Lean Cole and Ethel Bridger were;
Osmer Lean COLE  b 1860
Herbert Lean COLE b 1862
both in Hampshire .

Lean was used as a middle name ....

Deb,

You're right, but Enrique LEAN COLE, my grandfather (son of Herbert Lean COLE), used LEAN COLE as a surname and since then it's the surname of the family. Do you think that this is a common thing? Do you think that we must hypehn LEAN-COLE?

Michael
Title: Re: Henry Roger COLE and descendants
Post by: deb usa on Friday 24 August 07 17:32 BST (UK)
Hi Michael

Yes that does happen ...many people choose to make their middle names  part of their surnames...I think that if Lean Cole is being used as a surname it should be hyphenated ...just to make it easier for future genealogists LOL

When and where was William james Lean Cole born ... I am going to post the census with Ethel Cole nee Bridger ...William J L Cole is also gone during census taking !!! I cannot find his birth on IGI  although I found his sister's , Caroline Rebecca... see previous posts.

Rebecca also seems to be a prominent name in the family!

okay , please excuse the post regarding when and where WJL Cole was born ...  ::)  ......  silly question seeing as I had posted him in the 1841 and 1851 census .... being b abt 1833, Stonehouse, Devon :o

He does not appear on any census thereafter , most probably at sea!
It is just irritating me that I cannot find his christening.

Did you notice in the 1841 census ..where William Cole is living with his mum, Jane ... that living next door is Rebecca, his granny and Alice , his aunt ! (one of the first posts on this thread).

Hi Michael

back , after a busy afternoon :D

Re: the info that you found on the internet earlier today ... I think that the person who posted the request, was worried that Jane S Cole was getting pension even though Henry R Cole was still alive and working for the RN . They have that in 1851 Jane S Cole was a "pensioner" wife, RN . On the original census I am sure that it states that Jane is a "PURSORS" wife RN. Also going by his service card (posted earlier)...he was a Paymaster... so Purser would definitely fit !

Hi Deb!

I've been drawing my family tree according with what you sent me and this is what I have. You can download this file to see what we've got up to now: www.bodegasestepa.com/Cole.xls

I'm visiting my father tomorrow, he's eager to see the tree!

I think that what's missing is:

Death date of WJL COLE
Birth date and death date of Jane Sedgwick LEAN
Information about Henry Roger COLE

Tommorrow I'll scan some old picture of WJL COLE and family and I'll send them to you.

Thanks again.

Michael

Hi Michael

I am trying to find out more about Jane Sedgwick Lean Cole b c 1802, Plymouth Devon.

we have her in the 1841 (aged 35), 1851 (aged 49), 1861 (aged 59)...

I think this may be her in 1871:
Melville House, Wilton street, Portsmouth

Jane S Cole, lodger , widow, 70 annuitant b devonshire, Plymouth
living with Archibald and Louisa Your.

ahhh hah !! Here is her death:

Jane Sedgewick Cole
b abt 1801
died: sept q 1875
Portsea Island, Hampshire
vol 2b pg 279

I still cannot find her birth although her siblings  Alice Sedgwick  Lean , Francis Lean,  William Blinkhorn Lean and Rebecca Sedgwick Lean , were all christened  by their parents Francis Lean and Rebecca.

I wonder if Rebecca Sedgwick Lean isn't Jane Sedgwick Lean. Maybe when they were growing up they differentiated the Mother (Rebecca) with the daughter (Rebecca) by calling her JANE ! LOL ...clutching at straws here  :-\ ::)

will search firther

okay

now onto William James Lean Cole:

we have him in 1841 and 1851 with his mum and siblings ...his dad Henry R Cole seems to be at sea everytime the census is taken  :-\

We know that William JL Cole married Ethel Bridger;

I have posted the details of Ethel Cole and their sons in 1861 and 1871, Ethel then dies in 1878. WLJ cole also never seems to be around at census time ...also at sea ...seems to be a family trait LOL

in 1871 she is still married. maybe ordering Ethel's death cert we may find a clue as to if he was still alive , if he registered her death !

there are sooo many deaths for William Cole ...this may be a possible:
William Cole
b 1833
d Mar 1881
Alresford, Hampshire

I cannot find a William J L Cole death  ::) ???

Micheal ,,,

did you see my post re: the 2 x Julia Jane Cole?

I have also just noticed something ...the photographer who took the picture of WJL Cole was in George street Plymouth ...

in 1841 there is a Francis LEAN, 40, (I think maybe the brother of Jane Sedgwick Lean, Alice S. Lean etc )

he is living in George street, st Andrew Plymouth with
Caroline 30, Francis 9, Caroline 4, Louisa 2, Leslie 1

I have looked in the 1841 for any Sedg(e)wick Families .... There are none ... i wonder when and where  Jane Sedgwick Lean 's parents Francis Lean and Rebecca? were married ?

I am getting confused with all these names ...I need to regroup LOL

Herbert Lean Cole didn't marry, Enrique is a natural son of unkwnown mother (one of my goals is to find her but I have to travel to Uruguay to do this).

You have to download the Excel file just typing thew address in your navigator.

Hi Good one , Michael

the age definitely seems to tally ...he was b c 1833.

The death cert will only give you date and place of death, cause of death and who registered it ....  it may be interesting to see all those datails ....

Ethel may have been there to register , as she died 3 years after him ...or it may have been one of his boys!

Do you have any info on your Herbert Lean Cole .... I cannot find him at all after the 1871 census, where he is with his mum Ethel and brother Osmer. Did he also follow in his brother's footsteps ..ie: clergyman or did he follow the Royal Navy , purser occupation.

I wonder if he went straight to Uruguay or if he travelled to other spots before settling there ? maybe there are other photos which could give us clues ...

Deb,

Pippa Letch from Australia has written to me. I think that he descends from Julia Jane Cole so I sent him all the details and I'm waiting for his (her?) reply!

Thank you for your offer but my card has to work, I'll sort it out.

You will love the funny picture I'm sending you.

Michael

Good morning Michael

i have found something else .... Jane Sedgwick Lean , had a brother called William Blinkhorn Lean ( b 1797) .....

this comes from the National archives too:

Admiralty: Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Coastguard and related services: Officers' and Ratings' Service Records (Series II) ADM 29/28/497
Original page number: 497 William Blinkhorn LEAN; Rank: Masters Assistant; Born: [Not Given]; Age on entry: 12; Dates served: 10 March 1808-30 May 1827; Date and Type of Application: Admiralty 20 April 1842 . Original page number: 497 William Blinkhorn
Date range: 1841 - 1842.

I wonder if this would show parents names ...most probably not  :-\  We know his dad was francis Lean ...mother Rebecca??

Deb,

Keith gave me access to his book and I found it very interesting! (I saw your wedding photo!)

I'm very busy during the week so I will update the information and investigate a little more during the weekend.

Still waiting for the data of Pippa Letch from Australia.

Regards,

Michael

Interesting sequence of postings but I notice that there's a problem with the name of Henry's wife!!
Henry Roland Cole married Jane Sedgwick Lean.  She was daughter of Francis Lean and Rebecca Sedgwick, born in Stonehouse, Plymouth about 1802.
The 1851 Census shows her at home with 3 children, Purser's Wife R.N.  Also in the household is one of her sisters, Alice Sarah Lean who was born 'At Sea' but was baptised in Stoke Dameral.

Enid,

Thanks for your comments. Your appreciation is correct, the only mistake is that the  name is Henry Roger Cole and not Henry Roland Cole.

Greetings form Argentina,

Michael

Hi Deb!

Nice hearing from you. I stopped working with my family tree a while ago and I'm not in touch with Keith since then. I hope I can restart as soon as possible with this nice work.

Michael
